Video: Western Kentucky Loses Against Six Players

Crazy stuff here, courtesy of the Sun Belt Conference. Last night, Western Kentucky (5-11) and Louisiana-Lafayette (8-8) needed extra play to determine a winner. With the game tied at 70, Lafayette’s Elfrid Payton converted on a go-ahead layup with 3 seconds remaining in overtime. But both coaches, the broadcasters, and, um, the referees failed to realize Lafayette had six players on the court for the final possession. Western Kentucky’s half-court attempt hit the backboard as time expired, and the game ended. Just like that. Mike Wood, the Sun Belt’s coordinator of officials, said the referees can’t go back to the monitor and overturn a play because six men are on the floor. Either they catch it live and call a violation or it’s history. And to cap it all off, Western Kentucky fired head coach Ken McDonald just hours after the game. Confusion, madness and inexplicable officiating in this one. Wow.
