Dwyane Wade: ‘Keep An Eye On’ Collin Sexton

The Cleveland Cavaliers have been off to one of the most surprising starts of any team this season, spearheaded by their young backcourt of Collin Sexton and Darius Garland.

Garland, an early candidate for Most Improved Player, has certainly raised eyebrows with an increased aggressiveness offensively and a skillset that fits perfectly with the modern era of guards. However, Sexton remains the Cavaliers’ most consistent scorer, a role that he’s held for at least the past two seasons.

The third-year guard out of Alabama is averaging a career-high 26.0 points per contest six games into the 2020-21 season after averaging 20.6 points per game in the 2019-20 season.

What’s more, Sexton is doing so with extreme efficiency, shooting .556 from the field, .550 from 3-point range and .806 from the free-throw line.

With numbers like those, it makes sense that Sexton continues to gain the respect of the league at large. Even NBA legends, like future Hall of Fame inductee Dwyane Wade have taken notice of Sexton, saying to “keep an eye on” the Young Bull.

As Wade writes, Sexton is certainly coming into his own, with the guard’s decision-making, defense and passing ability improving as well; he’s averaging a career-high 3.7 assists and career-low 1.8 turnovers per game this season as well.

The game appears to have slowed down tremendously for speedy Sexton, which has already spelled trouble for the league.
