During the HoopsHype Podcast with Michael Scotto, Scotto and other Rockets beat writer Ben DuBose discussed the future of John Wall and his teammates, that will be free agents during the 2023 offseason.
According to Scotto, Wall is “expected” to opt-in and sign his player option this summer. Furthermore, Scotto reports that the deal will give the Rockets more time to trade him. Worst-case scenario, the Rockets and Wall’s representation, Klutch Sports, are expected to work together on a buyout agreement before the 2022-2023 season begins.
If Wall is bought out, it’ll allow the floor general to test the free-agent market. At 32-years-old and healthy, Wall has played just 40 games since rupturing his Achilles tendon during the 2018-2019 season. Despite the plethora of injuries Wall has suffered throughout his career, Wall still has the speed and explosion that’ll allow him to be a valuable contributor for a team seeking a veteran point guard.
By the time the salary of Wall, Eric Gordon, and Christian Wood are off the books in 2023, the Rockets will be back in win-now mode after their done surrendering the draft picks they traded to move Russell Westbrook to Washington.
