Rudy Gobert Looking For Supermax Contract in His Extension

Rudy Gobert is entering the final year of his contract, worth roughly $25.8 million in 2020-21. If the Utah Jazz want to avoid Gobert entering unrestricted free agency next offseason, they may need to sign him to a designated veteran extension very soon.

According to Porter Larsen of ESPN, Gobert and his camp are looking for a supermax contract, similar to what Giannis Antetokounmpo just got in Milwaukee. He’s eligible to do so as Defensive Player of the Year recipient.

Larsen says that Utah, in contrast is looking to sign Gobert to something more in the ballpark of the standard maximum extension. The difference is that a supermax extension would start at 35% of the salary cap as opposed to a standard max for a player of his service which would be 30%.

Gobert and the Jazz have until the start of the season on Tuesday to come to a supermax extension agreement. If they don’t put pen to paper before then, they’ll be limited to standard extension options.

Gobert is one of the premier centers in the NBA, especially defensively. He’s a two-time NBA Defensive Player of the Year and a one-time NBA All-Star. Last season with the Jazz, Gobert averaged 15.1 points, 13.5 rebounds and 2.0 blocks per contest.
