Isaiah Thomas Secures Opening Win for USA FIBA World Cup Team

Isaiah Thomas continues to prove beyond a reasonable doubt why his play is still up to par with the League’s best. Thomas, who is playing for the USA’s FIBA World Cup qualifying team, sealed the team’s first win Sunday with a pull-up three over the outreached hands of his defender.

The USA’s first qualifying game came against Cuba in Chihuahua, Mexico where Thomas dropped a team-high 21 points in the USA’s 95-90 win over Cuba.

“It’s an honor and a privilege to put USA on your chest,” Thomas said via ESPN. “So, anytime USA Basketball comes calling, I’m always going to be for it. We have a great group of guys, a great coaching staff, and it was fun to be out there. It was a great game. It was a tough game for us.”

After DaQuan Jeffries and Frank Mason III were removed from the roster due to an injury and not being cleared respectively, Thomas and Justin Anderson were named as replacements. The two-time All-Star first appeared for the National team back in February where he started two games while qualifying for the Americup, averaging a team-high 14 points.

Thomas and USA’s next matchup will be Monday against Mexico.
