The Brooklyn Nets Call Joe Johnson ‘Joe Jesus’

Given his penchant for bailing his team out with game-winning shots, the Brooklyn Nets have begun to call Joe Johnson “Joe Jesus”. No word yet if this will appear as a nickname during the January 10 game against the Miami Heat. Per the Star-Ledger:

Sure, on occasion, he has been the Nets’ savior with two game-winning buzzer-beaters this season, but his numbers recently had been lousy: He had been averaging only seven points over the previous five games and had been held in single digits in five straight games for the first time in 11 years.

But Monday night, he scored 23 as the Nets beat the Atlanta Hawks, 91-86, at the Barclay Center for their third consecutive victory. And that performance has led to a new nickname:

Joe Jesus.

“He might not be there when you call on him,” teammate Kevin Garnett said. “But he’s there when you need him.”
