This has been a foregone conclusion for some time now, but at 3pm EST today, Andrew Wiggins will announce that he’s turning pro.
The Kansas Jayhawks will hold a press conference this afternoon, and Wiggins is expected to address the media alongside head coach Bill Self.
Per Rock Chalk Blog:
“I wish I had more time to stay here and do my thing and just be with the team and the coaches and all these wonderful fans,” Wiggins said following Kansas’ loss to Stanford in the NCAA tournament last week. “I’m sad it’s my last time. But I’ve enjoyed my time here. I couldn’t ask for more.”
The decision doesn’t come as a surprise as Wiggins made his intentions known very early on and he’s a projected as a top three pick in every single mock draft and he could go as high as the No. 1 overall pick.
Wiggins finished the season with a 17.1 points per game and 5.9 rebounds per game average in his lone season in the NCAA. He’s the all-time leading freshman scorer with 597 points. Wiggins was an unanimous All-Big 12 first-team member and picked up numerous All-American honors, including second-team All-American by the NABC.
The 6-foot-8 freshman becomes the third one-and-done in Kansas history (joining Josh Selby and Xavier Henry.) Fellow Jayhawk Joel Embiid could soon be part of that list, though his plans aren’t yet known.
Andrew Wiggins has been in the spotlight since his high school days, and with a shot at being the top overall pick in this summer’s NBA Draft, it only makes that he leaves college after just one season.
