Elena Delle Donne And Her Sister Star in Inspiring Gatorade Short Film

by September 17, 2016

In a deeply touching short film by Gatorade, Elena Delle Donne shares the story of how her older sister Lizzie helped her reconnect with the game of basketball during the most difficult time of her life.

Elena left a scholarship with the University of Connecticut during her freshman season to be with her sister in Delaware.

Lizzie, who Elena calls her biggest inspiration, is blind and deaf and has cerebral palsy. She helped her fall back in love with the game.

“Everybody thinks that I came home to take care of her,” said Elena, “but she was the one helping me, getting me out of the worst rut of my life.”

The story was inspiration for sculptor Michael Murphy, who used 1,606 wind spinners and a 20-by-20-foot metal structure outside the Chicago Sky’s arena to create a piece that, from one angle, the viewer sees a portrait of Delle Donne. From another, the viewer can see Gatorade’s “G” symbol.
