For Old Time’s Sake: Jay Williams (Duke)

Jay Williams is one of the coldest college basketball players of the last 15 years. After a stellar high school career at St. Joseph HS in New Jersey complete with NJ POY and McDonald’s All-American honors, Williams headed for Mike Krzyzewski and the Duke Blue Devils. He went on to average 14.5 pts, 6.5 asts and 4.2 rbs as a freshman earning the ACC ROY award. In 2001 he helped lead Duke to the National Championship game averaging 25.7 pts during the tournament. He won the Naismith and Wooden awards in 2001, graduated Duke with a degree in Sociology in only 3 years, and promptly had his #22 jersey retired on Senior Day. The Bulls selected Williams #2 overall in the 2002 Draft (after Yao Ming) and he started at PG for most of the ’02-03 season putting up decent numbers. Then came the motorcycle accident that effectively ended his basketball career. I believe he would have been an All Star PG a few times over by now had that accident not occurred but at least he’s found a life in broadcasting. Never going to forget that performance at Maryland (below). Shout out to my cousin Sam and my boy Fromage, both Dukies.

2001 Duke Basketball Notable Players – Carlos Boozer, Shane Battier, Mike Dunleavy Jr, Chris Duhon, Jay Williams, Reggie Love. Ironic that the best player of the crop is the only one not playing currently (Reggie Love is ballin out of control in DC as we all know or should know).
