NBPA Chief Billy Hunter Got a 25% Raise Last Year

Despite a disastrous lockout — for NBA players, who made enormous concessions to the owners — NBPA chief Billy Hunter pocketed $3 million last year, which represented a nice little salary bump. Per Bloomberg and USA Today: “Billy Hunter made $3 million in salary this past year as executive director of the National Basketball Players Association, a 25 percent increase over what he earned while leading the union through a season-shortening lockout that resulted in missed paychecks for the organization’s members. Hunter’s salary was disclosed in the association’s annual filing with the U.S. Labor Department, which was made available on Sept. 29. […] The scrutiny prompted the union to hire Theodore V. Wells Jr. and law firm Paul, Weiss, Rifkind, Wharton & Garrison for an independent review and financial audit. The U.S. Attorney’s Office in Manhattan is also investigating. The independent review and the U.S. investigation are not finished, according to two people familiar with the situation. They requested anonymity because of the ongoing inquiries.”
