Home Cooked Pt 1

By Konate Primus

Often in my posts and when I talk I use the term “Dope”, and this weekend I also used the term in a conversation with a older Caucasian male at Princeton University. He asked me “Where does that term come from and why do I use it the way I do?” So, to answer his question, I told him I have no idea who was the first person to use the term or what region it originated in. All I know is where I’m from that’s what we say when we like something a lot. My guess is the term came from the effect actual dope has on you or at least the misconception of what it does to you. Dope gets you high and falsely relieves your pains, at least that’s what I think.

When I use the term, most of the time it’s in reference to music or fashion, because that’s what makes me feel better when I’m having a bad day. Those are my addictions. I become another person when I hear some classic B.I.G or when I get a fresh pair of high top Adidas. I don’t know why but it gives me a slight feeling of euphoria.

There are different levels of dope-ness and Adidas covered a few of them with their new “Home Cooked” collection. I’m not going to lie to you, I’m not crazy about all of ’em so I’m going to label them by their ability to put you under the influence.

Miami, Cleveland, and Denver: comparable to Sizzurp, makes you feel stupid in a good way but it’s not against the law. I wouldn’t do it.

Lakers: similar to weed, I could see a lot of people down with it. I’m not mad at it but it doesn’t do anything for me.

NYC: compararble to Shrooms. The team stinks but you appreciate what it stands for. I can see folks losing sleep over wanting to know “Where did I get this jacket from?”

Houston is raw and uncut Coke- This is dope at its purist! You can’t go back to dressing regular after this one. You’ll be expected to have dope ish all the time.
