Miami Reportedly Extending Erik Spoelstra’s Contract

The Miami Heat are said to be finalizing a multi-year contract extension for head coach Erik Spoelstra.

Spoelstra, 45, is the second-longest tenured coach in the NBA.

Miami went 48-34 last season, and came within a victory of reaching the Eastern Conference Finals.

Per Sun-Sentinel:

Spoelstra took over as Heat coach from Pat Riley in 2008-09 and guided the Heat to the NBA Finals from 2011 to 2014, with NBA championships in 2012 and ’13.

Spoelstra was to be entering the final year of his contract, with the extension expected to take him through at least 2018-19.

Spoelstra, 45, will be working with a reshuffled staff next season, with lead assistant David Fizdale having taken over as Memphis Grizzlies coach this offseason, with Heat assistant coach Keith Smart to join Fizdale on the Grizzlies’ staff.
