China Advances To Medal Round

Also: more on the US destruction of Spain, and the relative lack of concern over “that” photo in China.

by Alan Paul

The Olympics Basketball Arena erupted into pandemonium when China defeated Germany 59-55, virtually guaranteeing their advancement to the medal round (Germany would have to beat Team USA to keep China out). The packed arena knew what was on the line and cheered passionately throughout the game, celebrating hard as China cruised through the second half, seemingly on their way to victory.

The energy began to seep out of the building as Germany stormed back in the final minutes and China seemed on the verge of collapsing, much as they did against Spain last Tuesday. But after five straight empty possessions, Yao Ming hit a short jumper to stop the bleeding, pulling the audience back in with force. Minutes later, as the clock ticked down, with China holding the ball and a one point lead, future Laker Sun Yue drove the lane and kicked back to Yi Jianlin, who nailed the long two.

“That was the biggest shot of my life,” Yi said afterwards.

When he hit the shot, the arena exploded into a flag-waving, cheering frenzy that didn’t abate after the team walked off the court, continuing for 10 minutes. Later, when Yi walked into the press conference, he was met with cheers from the Chinese press, who applauded again when he stood up to walk out after answering a few questions.

With the medal round in sight, China will have to refocus on a new goal. The basketball tournament is sure to remain more exciting for all involved with China’s continued involvement.

I covered the Redeem Team’s demolition of Spain and wrote a column about it. This was a lot of fun. Just an overwhelming performance.

This Spanish “slant eyed” controversy and lack of controversy has been really interesting.

The first Chinese player to play college basketball in the United States thinks Team USA has the gold medal in the bag. Check it out.

  • Joe Posted: Aug.17 at 3:29 am
    amen on the 2nd part

  • Sesa Posted: Aug.17 at 12:24 pm
“No one in China cares about that photo”. I beg to differ

  • Diogo Posted: Aug.17 at 12:24 pm
Lo and behold, the bullsh*t controversy. Lesson: don’t inflict your moral values onto others.

  • Sesa Posted: Aug.17 at 12:25 pm
While controversy in the eyes of beholder article is just another attempt of justification

  • alan paul Posted: Aug.17 at 12:26 pm
I am absolutely not trying to justify. I think it’s awful, but it did not cause a ripple here as far as I can tell.

I’m Chinese, and I think slant-eyes is more of a Japanese characteristic. Our eyes are just… flat.

  • tinchek Posted: Aug.17 at 2:29 pm
if the chinese people don’t care about that than nobody should!

once again, dirk demonstrates his choking abilities for all to see

    Alan Paul is Mr. Olympics.

  • tenorca Posted: Aug.17 at 4:08 pm
@ Alan Paul: I love that you’re one the few guys I read who just flat out calls this team unbeatable. I agree. With everyone talking about Spain playing possum, I note that Spain needed a 14 point comeback to force overtime against…China. No disrespect to China (who seemed like they were playing over their heads), but that’s not the M.O. of a team that can beat the U.S. I worry only about Emanuel Ginobli but I don’t worry much.

Tenorca, Spain has not been impressive in this tournament and they just quit against USA. Anyone who fears Pau Gasol after his Finals performance is an idiot. Sorry but he was exposed as a softie and they abuse him like rag doll. You should fear no one. really believe that they can only lose by having a collective brain fart.

  • alan paul Posted: Aug.17 at 8:15 pm
Tenorca, Fer no one. Spain has not been impressive at all. I’ve seen a bunch of their games. Pau Gasol was exposed as a softie in the Finals and they go at him like he’s a rag doll. Only USA can beat USA.

  • Sesa Posted: Aug.17 at 9:43 pm
The Gasol brothers need to play as a tandem, is it just me or it’s Pau displaying dirk-like choke-ness against USA?

I think this Sun Yue kid is going to be kind of raw once he hits the L. Sasha better watch his back and Farmer too. This guy just might be…I’m hoping he is. and message to Kobe:step your damn game up. thank you.

  • DP aka D.Polo Posted: Aug.18 at 1:44 am
Sesa, his name is Paula not Pau. His real name is the now the property of Kevin Garnett.

  • Hursty Posted: Aug.18 at 2:32 am
Anyways, Australia beat Lithuania by 31!!! Bogut had 23 points and 3 3′s in 16 minutes.

  • Hursty Posted: Aug.18 at 2:35 am
Looks like they’ll be playing Spain rather than the USA thank god. Lithuania will still finish 1st in the pool and Croatia 2nd.

  • tinchek Posted: Aug.18 at 5:40 am
croatia had 54-16 at halftime against iran^^

  • alan paul Posted: Aug.18 at 8:46 am
DP, To me Sun does not look ready for the L, though he has had some nice moments. I am not at US/Germany game tonight because I am at China/US baseball. Will not be at first round of playoff cause I am playing a gig with my band for Lord Sebastian Coe. Really. The next night we are playing for Princess Anne. Truth is always stranger than fiction.

  • Andrew Posted: Aug.18 at 9:13 am
Hursty – how was the downtown shooting clinic? Insane how many shots went down in that game. Will we not be playing USA anymore? Thank Chris(t) for that. Pau will get beasted by Bogut.
