The Post Up: An MVP Evening

And Josh Howard’s ankle makes me sad.

by Holly MacKenzie / @stackmack

Well, well well. Cleveland gets nine days off and they come out flat. Nah, not a chance. Not on MVP night for LeBron James.

I got chills, tingles and I couldn’t stop smiling as they showed the entire Cavs team standing pregame watching LeBron get his award.

I also thought it was funny to think of the morning shootaround where Bron didn’t return his trophy for the night ceremony because he forgot.

The Cavaliers easily took Game 1, winning 99-72 as the 2008-2009 MVP scored 34 points to go with 10 rebounds.  While the game was competitive to start, the Hawks died in the second half and the Cavs pulled away without looking back. How appropriate it was that Bron’s first points of the game came on a dunk to punctuate his (near) perfect season at home. I’m such a damn sucker for trophy presentations. I loved seeing the fans in their WIT-MVP-NESS shirts. I also loved seeing Delonte West dish 9 assists to go with his 13 points and Mo Williams score 21. I didn’t think LeBron would come out flat, but I did think some of his teammates might. They proved me wrong.

Onto the Denver/Dallas game. The Nuggets closed out the third quarter strong thanks to a steal from Chauncey Billups, opened the fourth quarter on a 16-2 run and went on to run away with the  victory from there. The final score was 117-105, but it felt as though the Nuggets had the game under control for all of the fourth.

They are just solid. I thought the series against the Hornets was more of a case of the Hornets playing horribly and not showing up (and I still think that occured), but in these two games against Dallas, I can’t help but be very impressed with the way the entire team has come out to play. Billups has everyone thinking hustle and everyone playing with heart. It’s a beautiful thing to see in Denver.

Now to see how they handle Dallas at home. I think the Mavs will get a game and I’m interested to see how the Nuggets respond.

Only bad thing here is the ankle of Josh Howard. The numerous replays of the actual ankle flip-flopping from Game 1 that they insisted on showing last night made me feel slightly ill. Hate to see Josh down and the absence of him really hurts the Mavericks. Here’s hoping he’s going to have one quick turnaround with that ankle and can be on the court again soon.

On a personal note, it’s early Wednesday morning and I’m flying home to Nova Scotia tomorrow. Mother’s Day weekend and rather than send a card I figured I’d come home for a visit. Cannot wait! So, all of you readers, do not forget: Sunday, May 10th = Mother’s Day.

Lakers/Houston, Orlando/Boston tonight. Who do you have winning?

I’m saying Lakers and I’m saying Boston. Gotta tie these things up!

Can’t wait to see more of Ron Artest. I’m just loving him in the playoffs. I’m really loving the chemistry between Yao and Aaron Brooks, too. Has anyone seen Yao laugh as hard as he did with Ron in that hilarious press conference last week? Then the press conference last night where he was all jokes with our guy, Vince Thomas, Yao’s been killing it. It’s so much fun to see him enjoying his team. So great to hear he’s healthy and his knee is good to go.

Who has been your favorite player to watch in the playoffs so far?

I’ve been enjoying Ron, but I’ve gotta go with C. Billz. Russ makes me laugh every single time he refers to Mr. Big Shot as such. It’s been great getting to watch the entire Nuggets team, but to see Chauncey shine has just been so nice.

Also, thoughts are with Leon Powe who underwent surgery on his knee yesterday. Get well soon, Mr. Powe. Keep your spirits up.

Thanks for the recap Holly, C Billz is nice with his.

    Dallas looks D.O.A.

  • Manumaniac

Lebron is the real thing. An MVP player, an MVP performance.

  • http://www.hibachi20.blogspot.com Hursty

TAD- to answer your question from yesterday… Ron, Yao, Brooks. Wafer scoring a bit helps too, so does Hayes defensively. Scola can get 15/10 the way Pau and Bynum played (or didn’t) the other day.
I’m just gonna say the Rockets are winning today. Just for the heck of it. And the Magic too.

“Rex Chapman is still alive?” There’s that nasty streak the Dirkster tries so hard to hide. Let it out Dirk. Can’t keep taking all that punishment from nba defenders without the occasional lashing out. Great game btw. Too bad your teammates reverted to mid december form.

I’m really happy for Chauncey. He seems like a good dude, and the winner’s mentality he’s brought to the Nuggs makes me smile. I can’t wait to see them go up against the Lakers, if Kobe’s squad makes it that far. And Yao has been cracking me up too. They all seem like they’re more together without TMac. I wonder where he’ll be playing next year, since I think his Houston days are over. All-in-all enjoying these games. Although, for some reason, I’m not that into the Magic/Celtics series. I really don’t care about that one surprisingly, because I am a Howard and SVG fan. Hmmm…

So, what exactly are the flaws in Lebron’s game again? Jump shoo… well, not really anymore… But he doesn’t post as muc… well, he does now… oh, well he could be a better defen… man, he finished second in DPOY voting… Well, he needs to create more IN the pa… he does that now too… damn… I… damn…

Um, what was my question? I have a short term memory.

    Jukai:But he totally sux.

The Hawks are the most inconsistent team in the playoffs; they either win going away or lose in blowout fashion. Come a Hawks fan please explain to me why that is?

Imagine if Lebron was a good teammate.

  • vtrobot

The correct player got the MVP last year. The correct players got it this year. It’s nice when the league gets things right. Cleveland is a steamroller right now. Cavs/Nugs finals would be rough.

  • http://sfdjilf.com Jukai

vtrobot: Chris Paul didn’t get the MVP last year… what are you talking about?

  • http://sfdjilf.com Jukai

If the Rockets play the Nuggets in the Western Conference Finals, and I’m watching the game on that four-view split screen that the NBA had on their website for the all-star game, I want one camera on Allen Iverson at all times from his couch, and another camera on Tracy McGrady at all times from the bench. Just pan in on their faces.

  • http://ittakesanationofmillionstoholdthissac.blogspot.com ciolkstar

    Enter the Age of Lebron

  • http://sfdjilf.com Jukai

Enough about this Lebron guy Ciolkstar, dude is all athletic. No skill about him. If I was 6’8 and 265 pounds, I could do all the stuff that Lebron does, and that includes the fadeaway jump shots, the no look passes, the timed steals, the leadership, the breakdown moves on defense, the fakes while handling the ball, that’s all pure athleticism, no skill involved.

  • http://ittakesanationofmillionstoholdthissac.blogspot.com ciolkstar

Wait, T-Pain has been on the bench this series? The Laker bench?

  • PArsons

My favourite player of the playoffs … so far …hmmmmmm… I know ready… TMac! It seems the team chemistry, effort and overall play has gone from strength to strength. So thanks for sitting out TMac!

  • http://hibachi20.blogspot.com/ BETCATS

Lebron takes 20 shots and scores 30, Kobe takes 31 shots and scores 32. Who is the better scorer?

  • http://www.kb24.com The Seed

    Dumb question.

  • http://hibachi20.blogspot.com/ BETCATS

dumb answer by a seemingly dumb person. Why not think about it instead of wasting your words.

  • http://slamonline.com Russ Bengtson

I could have turned the Cavs/Hawks game off right after that first dunk. The outcome was set right there.

  • http://slamonline.com Russ Bengtson

And Dirk falls eight times and gets up seven.

  • riggs

lol @ Russ, i said the same thing to my brother after it happened.

  • http://slamonline.com Russ Bengtson

    LeBron James =/= David Robinson

  • vtrobot

@ jukai: i hear you. i would have loved to have seen CP3 get it. if everyone used the same criteria they did during the Nash MVP years, he would have. if they always voted that way i think J Kidd deserved a couple too. obviously it’s a hard award to define.

  • vtrobot

i always hated that D-Wade line. How do you get up an extra time?

  • http://www.twitter.com/TheDiesel Anton

@vtrobot: some people fall down and stay down. Wade only gets up once he’s heard the whistle

  • Myung

Tad, I wish I had a decent answer for you, but the best I could come up with is, “We are good at home, and suck on the road.” The Hawks aren’t much for gray areas. If I’m not mistaken, last night was the 9th (dating back to the Boston series) straight playoff game we’ve played in where the final point differential was 10 or more. Feast or famine. Jekyll or Hyde. It was an embarrassing loss, but not any more embarrassing than Game 7 last year and Games 3 and 6 vs. Miami. I hate to say it, but I’m getting almost numb to these sort of losses. It was a pathetic road showing once again last night.

How incredible are those MVP colorway ZL6′s ‘Bron was wearing last night?! Anyone know if they are going to be available anywhere? Help SLAM Kicks!

  • Myung

I get your point, Russ (and you were correct in your assumption that the game was over before it began), but just for the record, the very 1st play of the Miami series was an uncontested Dwyane Wade dunk and the series turned out well for us. Of course in this series Cleveland has home court advantage, and the Cavs >>> the Heat.

  • http://slamonline.com Russ Bengtson

Hey, whoa, I didn’t say that play determined the SERIES outcome. Just the game. (That said, y’all are getting smoked.)

  • Myung

Yeah…sadly. I agree. I don’t care if we take it to 5, 6, or 7 (I don’t see a sweep). We’re not advancing past this round. Joe Johnson: can a guy be considered overrated and underrated at the same time? I’m beginning to wonder…

  • http://sfdjilf.com Jukai

Myung, I wouldn’t put money against a sweep.

  • Myung

  • http://www.twitter.com/TheDiesel Anton

Inside the NBA is where the real amazing happens.
    *watching Cavs/Hawks highlight reel*
Chris Webber: “This was a game changer right here.”
Charles Barkley: “The game changer was when they got off the plane.”

  • Myung

Chuck’s hilarious. How many rings did he win again? Oh.

  • http://ittakesanationofmillionstoholdthissac.blogspot.com ciolkstar

I hear you Myung. Joe’s nonchalance is starting to border on unwillingness to accept the challenge of being the Hawks’ “leader”.

  • http://www.twitter.com/TheDiesel Anton

^^Great moments in Hawks fans history: people can’t be funny unless they have rings.

  • Myung

I actually think Chuck IS hilarious. Read my line again. I also take what he says with a grain of salt because he talks out of his butt, but I find him to be hilarious, Anton.

  • Michael

I still think the Hawks will win two at home.

  • http://www.shawn-kemps-offspring.blogspot.com/ TADOne

The Hawks better hope for a more lively crowd than they had in the 1st round.

  • Myung

I hope you’re being sarcastic, Tad. Bandwagon fans or not, the crowd has been great the past 2 postseasons (I went to Game 3 last year and Games 1, 5, and 7 this season). I’m not sure how much louder the crowd can get.

  • http://basketball-reference.com nbk

The Hawks better hope LeBron comes down with a ruthless case of the shingles or something haha they stand no chance at all

  • http://www.slamonline.com wayno

My favorite so far has been Chauncey Billups. Denver is a real competiter this year and Chauncey is a HUGE part of that. Shows what a little leadership will do for a team.

  • http://nicekicks.com MeloMan13

can Melo and JR get some love???

  • http://slamonline.com Jacob J

I thought Chauncey Billups or Dwyane Wade should’ve won MVP because Chauncey turned Denver into a contender and the Heat wouldnt be anywhere without D-Wade.

  • http://sportzin.com Joey E.

i agree. i’ve been saying all year chauncey is the real MVP

  • Manumaniac

Chauncey is an amazing player and a 4-time All Star, but I can’t really take anything away from Lebron. His Cavs are the “team to beat” all this year long in the NBA and his stats are absolutely outstanding. On the other hand of course, Chauncey managed to turn the Nuggets into an NBA contender team and he totally torched the New Orleans Hornets and Chris Paul in the playoffs. If you ask me, Lebron is the MVP of the regular season and Billups is the MVP of the playoffs so far.
Anyway, no worries for Chauncey. He’s already won a Finals MVP award back in 2004 (along with the title) and that matters the most. Man, what a player!
