Links: When Ball Is Life

Because at the end of the day, we are all family…

by Lang Whitaker | @langwhitaker

Got an email the other day that I thought was worth sharing with you guys. We have a lot of great commenters on SLAMonline. And I know there are some inter-commenter beefs and some people who don’t like other people, or whatever. But I look at SLAMonline as a family — maybe a dysfunctional family, but a family. Not everyone gets along, but at the end of the day we’re still a family.

Anyway, I got an email the other day from our longtime commenter who goes by the handle “James the Balla.” I’ve seen him post hundreds of times on SLAMonline, probably even interacted with him from time to time, but I had no understanding of him as a person until I got this email. I asked him if I could run it here on The Links and he said he was cool with it. To me, this email was a great reminder that even though we might not even really know each other, we’re all real people with real lives and things we have to face…

Hey Lang,

“James the Balla” here. I have been very busy and not on the site much recently, the main reason being I am about to deploy to Afghanistan. I am actually writing this letter inside of a tent, LOL. But to get to my main point, I wanted to shoot an e-mail off for a couple reasons.
The first being that since I won’t be able to watch many games, if any at all, my Lakers will be without my fan support. And if I do get any games, they will all be in French (I am going with a French Battle Group and Brigade). And there is something like an 18-hour time difference between Ontario and Afghanistan. So the only place to catch up on everything will be your site, which I look forward to.

Second, the site is awesome, even in the long, boring months of summer. I have been reading for a long time now and have almost every SLAM, from number one to the most recent. So that is where this e-mail became something I wanted to write.

Two months back I found myself writing letters to people (family and friends) who are close to me so that if something ever happened to me they would know how I truly felt about them and could share some memories. I haven’t gotten that far with them; I will finish them when I get back from my last bit of training here in Alberta.

But something that has been a big part of me since I was roughly 13 or 14 years old has been SLAM. It’s when I started ballin’, started hanging with my friends who are now my brothers, and it’s when I started reading every article in SLAM instead of just looking at pictures. So one thing I am writing out in my journal that my Mother will get if the worst happens to me over there (it won’t, but sh*t happens), is the small section I am writing about SLAM. In the event of my untimely demise (I have always wanted to say that lol … and I think that is how you say it? lol) I figured that I enjoyed my SLAM’s so much that it would be cool to hand them back to SLAM and let someone like Moose or someone who doesn’t have a lot of SLAM’s get the chance at having them. Win them in a contest or whatnot. They would only be going to waste in one of my family members basements if I didn’t figure out what to do with them anyways.

So that is it, nothing crazy. But if you get any e-mails from a Susan S., she is a very nice woman lol!

James S.

James, thanks so much for your email. Whenever you get a chance, please hit me up and let us know how it’s going, and I’ll share it with folks here on the site. Good luck and stay safe, and we’ll be thinking about you.

Oh, and while I and everyone looking to collect back issues of SLAM are all grateful for your offer, I think everyone will agree with me when I say I hope we never get to see your SLAM collection.

This was great. I hope everything works out for you James. As for everyone else, I love you guys, even when I act like I don’t. Were all here for the same reason. Now hurry up and start the season, Lang.

  • Milan

Man, that’s a great email. Thanks for sharing, Lang and James. James, I wish you all the best on your tour of duty and that you return home safe and back to reading your Slam collection. For me to Slam is a #1 source of basketball news and stories and so much more.

  • Hussman25

This truly shows @ the end of the day… when ball is life, we ARE all family. Thanks for sharing this James and Lang; Things like this put life in its proper context. Good Luck and may god bless you James and bring you home safely to your loved ones (and ur SLAM collection).

  • http://www.slamonline.com Eboy

I was chatting with James a couple of weeks ago on Facebook and he was giving me some info about his work there. Dude may be a pain in the a*s as James the Balla, but dude is straight up and down a great man in the real world. Thanks for this Lang.

  • Brian

Good luck James and take care. There can’t be anything worse than going to war with the French at your side!

  • http://twitter.com/smileyoufckers Bryan

Good stuff. This is another reason why this site is the absolute greatest.

  • Overtime

Great post. We all love same game at the end of the day. Good luck to you James

  • http://slamonline.com Adam Fleischer

Great e-mail. Thanks for sharing, James. I agree with Lang, I definitely don’t want to see that SLAM collection. Although I love that you have it. And yeah seriously start the season.

  • http://www.slamonline.com Holly MacKenzie

James!!! You’ve started/contributed to countless discussions in the comments section of The Post Up and once again, I thank you for your passion for this game! Thinking of you and your fam and sending some prayers up for this next step of your journey. We look forward to hearing from you.

  • http://slamonline.com AlbertBarr

James, godspeed and be safe. Thanks for sharing and like everyone else has said…may we never see your SLAM mag collection. That is some real life you are participating in. All our thoughts here in the SLAM fam will be with you whenever the lakeshow is battling on the court…or whenever someone is being a total LA jockrider (jk). Hopefully you will find time to mix it up here in the comments every once in a while.

  • http://www.chicagonow.com/blogs/chicago-bulls-confidential/ Diesel

Well done James. Wishing you a safe return. And Lang – spot on with the family comparisons. Can we all agree that Eboy is the creepy uncle in this family? Just kidding Eboy…picked you at random.

  • http://www.slamonline.com Eboy

It’s cool Diesel, you must be the fruitty nephew then. :)

  • TyMo

Thanks for sharing that e-mail, Lang. My brother-in-law will be deploying soon, too. And I’m sure most of you all know someone that has been deployed or will deploy. Really gives you a different look on things. James, good luck and stay strong. And thanks, man.

  • http://slamonline.com Ben Osborne

GREAT stuff. Big thanks to Lang and James.

  • Ghost

As someone who supports the troops wholeheartedly I really have much respect for you James. Best of luck out there.

  • http://www.twitter.com/TheDiesel Anton

Stay strong James. And since we’re all family…
Moose – dad said I can have the car this weekend so you’re bussing again
JTaylor – our doctor keeps telling me to remind you to take your meds
Lang – if you say “Hawks” more than 3 times a day, I’m telling mom
Cheryl – you should probably ignore the dating requests unless you want to move to Kentucky

  • http://slamonline.com Chris O’Leary

Stay safe, James. It’s bad enough you have to go to Afghanistan, they couldn’t have spared you a pit stop in Alberta? What kind of military do we have in Canada?

All the best James, hoping for the best.

  • http://slamonline.com Brad Long (Yes, that Brad Long)

  • http://aspov.blogspot.com Cheryl

Wow, thanks for sharing, Lang. And thanks for the commitment you’re making, James. My hope is that you return to your loved ones, your SlamFam, and your collection safe and sound. I’ll hold down the Laker fandom for you, after of course, my Heat fandom is completely covered! :-)

1 st of all shout out 2 scoop and tony gervino! Miss u guys. I’ve been a avid slam mag reader since issue #1. I was only 13 @ the time. Fell n luv w/it instantly. And I always knew u guys had a website but 4 sum reason didn’t FULLY check it out till this past june. I had no idea it would b such a kicka** website. It really makes the nba offseason go by quick! I still have bout 10 back issues. Not much. But I treasure them. My odest son is 10 and he’ll look thru them once n awhile. He luvs the ol skool players from my day. I like 2 re-read (is that a word?)them once n awhile. Takes me back 2 those days. One issue that I wish I had kept (I let 1 of my friends borro it and he lost it) was the issue w/pip on the cover w/his arms crossed. Can’t remember the # of the mag but it was issued n either 95 or 96. Luved that issue. Anyways…keep up the good work slam. And I’m pretty sure you will have 2 more future slam mag readers when my 2 boys grow up (my lil 1 is 3)

  • http://www.slamonline.com James the Balla

Wow, thanks for the love guys. I was 100 percent surprised when Lang asked me to post it. But I must say, I am blushing right now and that doesn’t happen too often. I just got in from a 13km ruck march and my legs are sore as fack, but I had to come see if the Links were up. Made my night!!
Thanks for all the love guys and hopefully I have time this season to get on and become the Kobe guzzling, Laker fanatic ya”ll have come to hate : D. Much appreciated!!

p.s. I will take a nice photo with some SLAM mag’s I am bringing with me when I get a few months in and get situated. I am hoping the KAF market will sell SLAM lol.

  • The Philosopher

    I shed a tear.
    You will be fine, brethren.
We all salute you, and we salute your bravery and courage.
    Shout out @Lang Whitaker.
    Shout out @SLAM.

  • http://slamonline.com Susan Price

dysfunctional family is right. lord knows what the reunion would look like. stay safe, james. can’t wait to hear your updates.

  • MikeC.

^^ A SlamFam get-together family picnic would probably start with some serious ish-talking between longtime posters/agitators, followed by a foodfight, followed by a fistfight, followed by somber handshakes, heartfelt apologies and some frosty brews. @James – As a fellow Canadian, thank you for doing what most of us are too chicken to do. Thanks for helping the world. It would be nice if you could cop some SLAMs while you’re over there and I have my fingers crossed for you that you can crack a frosty Moosehead or Blue when your throat is dusty.

  • http://www.hibachi20.blogspot.com Hursty

That was great James, wishing you a safe tour!
Also, as Jackie Moon would say.. EVERYBODY LOVE EVERYBODY!
The thought of a reunion.. wow.

  • JTaylor21

Though James the Balla annoys the SH*T out of me with his unconditional laker lover, I still wish him the best and hopes that GOD watches over him. Also JUKAI would be like the annoying uncle that swears he’s still HIP, BCRAWFORD would be the creepy uncle who still wears gold chains and shirts that expose his nasty chest hair, PHILOSOPHER would be the old and wise uncle who every looks to for guidance and I’ll be the rich relative who always brags about how much money he just made on the stock market during dinner. EBOY would be the former ball player that never made it but still loves to brag about his so called “Glory” days.

  • JTaylor21

How can I forget TSI, who would be the cousin who followed a life a crime that tries to swindle and scam everyone to buy into his various back alley schemes.

  • MikeC.

@JTaylor – would you be the cousin that just finished his first year of college and swears that he knows everything? I ask because I knew everything imaginable when I was 21. Now that I’m 31, I don’t know sh!t.

  • JTaylor21

@MikeC, Ha Ha you may be right though I’m 23 going on 40 because I’m starting to forget sh*t I used to remember so easily before.

  • The Philosopher

    You are my dude.

  • http://Soulbanger.tumblr.com Tapion786

I got chills reading that. Wish you the best James, and thank you for your service. We’re pulling for you to come home safe

  • The Philosopher

A reunion would be something else.
I would love to see what everyone looks like.
    Especially Jukai.
    Cheryl, too.
    Most definitely.

  • The Philosopher

I bet Jukai has a mean comb – over.

  • http://www.triplejunearthed.com/dacre Dacre

@ The Philosopher – you would be ASTOUNDED at how much Steve Nash and I look alike…every basketball stadium I go to for a run I get the same comments, ‘Hey It’s Steve Nash!?’…. good times.
@Lang – Since we’re fam now….can I please borrow a few dollars (thanks dad?!) got a wedding coming up in January 2011. I’m organising some surprise fireworks for my bride to be!

  • MikeC.

@Dacre – congrats on the upcoming nuptials. I tied the knot in July. Married life is great bro. My advice, don’t blow the whole loot-stash on the wedding, save some for the marriage. Before you know it, you’ll be doing stupid ish like buying a $900 dog because your wife thinks he’s cute.

  • http://www.triplejunearthed.com/dacre Dacre

Of course I’m a torrid 55% free throw shooter so believe me I’m underno dillusions of greatness whatsoever. : /

  • MikeC.

Also, is it just me (might be based on ads targeting IP addresses), but it’s odd that there’s a banner ad at the top of the page that links to a site about Canada’s involvement in Afghanistan.

  • http://www.triplejunearthed.com/dacre Dacre

@MikeC – THANKS for the heads up. I’ve been able to keep a relative tight reign on things I think/hope. We aint getting a dog!? You wouldn’t believe I’ve had to already say that!!? And neither of us care for seafood so thats not going to be on the menu.
We’re having TWO engagement parties though (one is a gift!) so there’s costs floating around all of that. Plus the honeymoon in vanuatu….. $$$ to burn……. not so much.

  • MikeC.

^^If you’ve both agreed to not getting a dog, get her to put it in writing. We both agreed to no pets since we both have allergies. I now am sitting on my sofa with a puppy snoring beside me. All things considered, I wouldn’t do a take-back since I love the little effer, but wives have some sort of power that girlfriends and fiancees don’t. We didn’t do a honeymoon after the wedding since we paid for it ourselves. Broke as ish right now. We’re going to DC in March to see Thunder-Wiz(good wives sit through NBA games with their husbands) and rock the Smithsonian. I’m a massive nerd with a history degree, so I win on all counts.

  • The Philosopher

My brother in law was just talking about these two dogs he and my sister had to get.
She liked them, so naturally, he also liked the dogs.
    @Mike C:
I’m sure I would be astounded.

  • JTaylor21

Oh Oh the depressing talk of married men, I think that this is a SIGN for me to vanish. Anyways good luck to both you guys on your harrowing journey

  • The Philosopher

For the record, I am not married.
Nor do I wish to be.

  • http://www.triplejunearthed.com/dacre Dacre

Run Philosopher…and don’t look back…don’t look back…MIKEC – Yes well, I’ve had a basketball hoop put up at her folks place, they have a nice big flat concrete area for hoopin’ when we have to do the family dinner thing (like tonight for example) and I’ve definitely made it very clear that BBALL will be a part of our life together, she has a solid mid range shot so I see it as ‘a shoot coach with benefits’. I’m definitely happy to be getting married!

I haven’t been posting on here for a little bit, probably just because of laziness, because I’ve still been reading. But James the Balla, this has definitely inspired me to come back to the Comments section. My man, I wish you the best of luck in your trip, and I pray that nothing unexpected will happen to you. Thanks for the tip in the email, but I hope that I or anyone else will never have to see those magazines.

  • http://hibachi20.blogspot.com Moose

Eboy would be the crazy uncle who wears Michael Jordan jerseys to Thanksgiving dinner and won’t stop talking about the Miami Heat’s inaugural season.
The Philosopher would be the (unmarried, i guess) cousin who hangs around and picks fights with people when he wants to but when you talk to him one-on-one, he’s actually a good dude (jk man haha)

  • http://aspov.blogspot.com Cheryl

Cheryl would be the little tomboy sister who fits right in with you and your buddies talking sports and shooting the sh1t, until one of your buddies gets a crush on her and then you realize that your little sister has actually grown into a gorgeous woman and you get pissed at your buddy for seeing her that way…

  • Lz – Cphfinest3

I just want to clear something up. I believe James is going over with the Dragoons from Quebec, not France. They’ll replace the boys/girls from Petawawa. The next rotation might be Canada’s last fighting contingent, since starting in 2011 we’ll only be training Afghan police and army (sort of like the US in Iraq).

Stay safe James, watch out for those IED’s.

Again … thanks everyone. I will get Lang an e-mail or two duing the tour. With a nice picture or two. And I won’t get greedy but if Lang wants to throw the picture I have in mind up on Links lol, that would be amazing!!!

JamestheBaller..good luck with everything on your duty and come back home safe and alive. The Slam family is great with all the weird, homerish, crude, idiotic, etc characters. Don’t post a lot on the site, but reading everything that is posted, including most of the comments. That’s how you start to ‘know’ who is who. Good to read this e-mail. Lang; thanks for sharing. James; take care and come back safe. There are so many SLAM’s you still need to put to your collection. Vaya con Dios!

  • http://slamonline.com Krishan

Stay safe jtb. Whenever some random LA post gets the haters’ collective panties up in a bunch, I can always count on you to troll them back. And slam, I hope this post and the number of commenters here that react positively to it show you that MAYBE we need a proper forum here, and not just a messageboard? I’m not complaining or anything (or maybe I am, just a little), but a forum would totally cement slamfam as a community. Just my two cents though, I still love everyone here, no h0m0.

@Krishan: I don’t think a forum would generate the needed ad space a website like this does. However, a revamped commented system with +/- (like/dislike) buttons would be awesome.
