Links: NBA 2K11 Review

Finally, it’s in the game…

by Lang Whitaker | @langwhitaker

I’ve spent the last two weeks dealing with health issues. First my own, battling the flu, and then my wife’s. I missed a couple of days of work, couldn’t travel to Atlanta for Bobby Cox’s final regular season game, couldn’t even do the podcast on NBA.com yesterday with Sekou.

All, however, was not lost. I received a copy of NBA 2K11 over a week ago, and every night, once things were quiet and everyone was snug in their bed, I’ve been settling down to attempt to recreate the legacy of Michael Jordan. And it has been nothing short of awesome.

2k11I was planning on writing a column for today’s Links comparing and contrasting NBA Elite 11 and NBA 2K11, which were both supposed to drop today, October 5. Until last week, when, just days before the game was set to hit store shelves, EA Sports announced they were indefinitely delaying Elite.

Instead, all we’ve got dropping today is NBA 2K11, so let’s get right to it: This is the best basketball video game ever released. And one of the deepest sports video games of all time.

2K11 not only has the Jordan Challenge mode, which I previewed here, but you can also play online, you can play franchise mode, you can play the My Player mode, the streetball mode… put it this way: I’ve spent about 15-20 hours on 2K11 and have barely scratched the surface.

I’ve written in the past about basketball video games and how the basic nature of video games keeps them from accurately relaying a true basketball experience. Part of the fun of basketball is the improvisational nature of the game, and it’s always been pretty much impossible to translate that to video games, which rely on structure and formulas. But to me, 2K11 is the closest we’ve come to accurately replicating it. For the first time I can recall in a game, 2K11 pretty much nails defensive switches. For instance, I was playing an ‘86 Bulls/Celtics game with the Bulls, and I missed a shot and the Celts got the ball and threw an outlet to Danny Ainge. I scrambled back to defend and the first guy who got back was Charles Oakley, and he (obviously) cut off Ainge’s drive. Ainge pulled the ball back out, and Oakley just naturally picked him on defense as the Celts set up their halfcourt offense. This is something that would probably happen in an NBA game, but hasn’t always happened in NBA video games.

What pushed things to another level was that Michael Jordan had to pick up Oakley’s man, Robert Parrish, and the Celtics ran a play for Parrish in the post against the smaller defender! Ainge dumped it down to Parrish, I ran down and doubled him as Oakley, and Parrish threw it back out to a wide-open Ainge for a three-pointer.

One facet of the game I’d like to see 2K address next year is the ballhandling. I’m not sure if the NBA Elite demo is still online, but the thing I really enjoyed about the demo was the new dribbling system. By utilizing both joysticks, you really had a terrific amount of control over your player. In 2K11 the ballhandling is responsive, and the more you use the isomotion controls the better you become at it, but it still feels as though there’s some luck involved with getting your guy to do exactly what you want him to do. At the same time, this isn’t NBA Street. It’s not easy to shake loose from guys, and you need to be smart when calling for a pick or an iso. Just like in the NBA.

Still, the first week or so I was playing the game, at least once in each game I went in to do a move with MJ, and I hit the dunk/layup button, and he broke off something that made me blurt out “Oh!” When’s the last time a video game pulled an audible reaction from you when you were playing alone? It’s also pretty awesome getting to play against, say, the 1986 Celtics, and remembering just how bad-ass Larry Bird, Dennis Johnson, Kevin McHale and the others were.

One other visual thing jumped out at me, and it’s really miniscule but it did intrude on my gameplaying experience a few times: For some reason when players have their white socks pulled up to their knees, the socks continually turn black from different angles, almost as if they’re hypercolor or something. I’m guessing 2K will fix this when they release the next patch.

I’m sure I’ll get around to playing My Player mode or The Association mode eventually, but for now it’s still me and MJ. It took me about a week, but I finally completed step one of the Jordan Challenge: Play against the 1986 Celtics, score 63+ points, shoot at least 50 percent from the floor and have at least 6 assists. For some insane reason I decided to try and accomplish this using 8 minute quarters, and I spent much of that time cursing the Celtics for constantly slowing the tempo. It was hard to get the Bulls to score 63 points, much less Michael Jordan alone. But eventually, the other night he finally did it. I mean, I did it. Actually, I guess we did it, Mike and I, together. (Next up, trying to put 70 on the Cavs. Craig Ehlo, get ready.)

As EA and 2K have battled for dominance in the NBA video game market the last few years, pushing each other to improve their games, the real winner has been those of us who play video games. This year, if you’re in the market for an NBA video game, you don’t have a choice. But with NBA 2K11, I don’t think you’re going to be disappointed.

@riggs – in my experience so far you just have to play slower. The more deliberate and organized you play the easier the game. But why in the world is Anthony Mason so whap….he beat me on a buzzer beater in the “double nickel” challenge to go along with his 18 points and 3 threes.

  • http://www.bulls.com Enigmatic

Anyone tried My Player mode yet? I created my guy and then…went to Jordan Challenge right afterwords…

  • http://slamonline.com nbk

yeah i got drafted number 30 in the first round. playin 24 minutes a game for the wizards. Just requested a trade

  • http://slamonline.com Lang Whitaker

I started My Player then went right back to Jordan Challenge. As for shooting, at least in Jordan Challenge, Kerr and Mark Price don’t seem to have any problem knocking down open jumpers.

  • http://slamonline.com nbk

the last time Kerr and Price had trouble hitting an open jumper i was in pampers.

  • http://thetroyblog.com Teddy-the-Bear

Question: ’90s Knicks are in this game right? Starks/Harper/Mase/Oak/Ewing?

  • tom

@teddy: yes they are, just beat`em with my sonics :-)

  • help

hey anybody have an account for on line play that is not using anymore cause i forgot my password from 2k10 account or the cd key please?

  • http://slamonline.com Bryan Crawford

In My Player, my character was selected 9th overall by the Utah Jazz. Currently on the Summer Circuit now and the Jazz team sucks. Gordon Hayward can’t make a shot and the rest of the guys are awful. I’m currently averaging 50ppg and 6asts and we’re 3-0 so far in summer league. Needless to say, I’m probably gonna make the team.

  • http://thetroyblog.com Teddy-the-Bear

NICE! Thanks tom. In a few days when I get this game, I’ll avenge the Knicks.

  • http://slamonline.com nbk

@Bryan how long are your quarters

  • Tyler

@Bryan how are you averaging 50ppg that’s crazy dawg?! Please inform me lol I must know

  • http://slamonline.com Bryan Crawford

    @nbk: 9 minutes
@Tyler: I’m nice like that, homie!

  • http://slamonline.com Bryan Crawford

I know have some doubters, but I’ll try and find a way to post pics of my My Player stats and NBA Draft position so you guys can see it ain’t no joke. Maybe I’ll take pics and then email ‘em to Lang…

  • http://slamonline.com nbk

@Bryan that makes sense. I was droppin 28PPG in summer league and was playin 6 minute quarters.

  • JTaylor21

BCrawford, quit with the shenanigans, you’re probably playing in kindergarten mode (I kidd I kidd) What level of difficulty are you playing?

  • http://slamonline.com Bryan Crawford

@JT21: HOF…that’s the only way to play.

  • Furious

    Playing defense is still infuriating.

  • Kwame

i like the game but the worst soundtrack ever. i thought i was playing tony hawk…

  • http://jayemmbee.blogspot.com Clutch Performer

    this game is BEAST MODE

  • JTaylor21

I just freaking missed on my first MJ challenge (47/5 and hold Nique under 21) win losing to Nique’s Hawks by 3. I forgot that you had to win the game along with matching MJ stats to complete that challenge and was cruising after I had 61/9, by the time I remembered it was too late and lost.

  • jrr4-pr

It is a great game but really really difficult one, specially on the offensive end. Im glad they made all the changes the did but why the hell did they change the way to shoot from the outside? it is so hard to hit jump shots even when one is wide open. And also the computer assisting on defense is overdue, almost every pass gets stolen! i was more than good on 2k10 but still finding my way on the new one.

  • G-R-egg

I’m actually okay with the jumpshot system, but I’ll agree that playing defense is one hell of a challenge. I still need a solid 7 hours straight of play-time to figure out how to stay in front of my man. I can’t tell you how many times thus far I’ve been completely blown by 1v1 and had to watch LeBron dunk on me. Any advice? (ps3)

  • Yesse

How can a video game review end up in a fight between which platform is the best? I like my Xbox 360. I like my PC which has an i7 and i don’t own a PS3, but i am sure it is a great console as well. Enough said.

I’m awful at this game and all others. But I still enjoy it and play everyday.

  • Zul 7

Got my copy a yesterday, and it is AWESOME. for me the NBA 2k series has been consistently satisfying, but this latest one is leaps and bounds better than the year before. It’s damn near perfect. And that opening sequence with you and MJ vs. Magic’s Lakers? gives me goosebumps.

  • jarrett

now if 2k could just make a College Basketball game with the same gameplay as 2k11 all my prayers will have been answered

  • http://www.triplejunearthed.com/dacre Dacre

Hi folks. Hope everyones going well (my fractured hands healing well, thanks for asking). I’ve been giving 2k11 the bidnez this weekend (even whilst having my engagement party this weekend also!?) and I’m noticing a nice learning curve on my part. Okay here is how I roll:
*Association Mode – 10 min quarters. Pro Level. PHX Suns
    _____________________________________________________
I got my @$! handed back to myself first game of the season by Atlanta (I let them keep Crawford even though as of right now he’s not resigned; I just “believe” they work something out). They flogged me at home 127 to 89 and I found I had ALOT of ball handling errors to tweek. Nay REMOVE. That long court pass idea I had to a streaking Richardson left me in tears (Nash 12 assists – 11 turnovers). I REALLY FELT (apart from my poor ball movement) I was watching the Suns literally REALISE that Amar’e was no longer on their team and…Why The Face..
    * Richardson did finish with 32 though as my sole bright spark.

GAME TWO WAS COMPLETELY REDEEMING. 1st game on a 3 game away run and I’m in Philly – The city of brotherly love (and a storming Evan Turner it turns out!!?). If this 2k outing is anything to go by Turner will get his this season and Doug Collins on the side lines looks very nice. I managed to get the passing scenario corrected (to the tune of Nashs 17 assists and 1 TURNOVER) and squeaked out a not so easy win on the road. Robin Lopez got player of the game 20 pts 8 rbs 3 blks and other than that rather ‘heady’ stat line I feel like I’m watching the PHX suns for reals.

    SO A QUESTION:
    _____________________________________________________
Anyone cranked their ASSOCIATION PLAY yet? Which team have you gone with?

  • http://www.bulls.com Enigmatic

^ I always play as the Bulls. We’re 3-1 right now. Lost to the Blazers (they whooped that a$$, really). Rose is averaging like 25, 10 and 3. I actually have two Association modes I’m playing, in the other one I’m doing the GM thing, simulating seasons. I picked the Raptors for that one, and it took a few seasons but I got them up to a championship contending status. The Heat or the Thunder end up winning it every year though. One thing I don’t like is, in the offseason when you get to the draft if you assign your assistant GM to do the draft for you, you end up with only one or no rookies. I need to fire dude…

  • Danny_W_UK

    @Dacre

Sacto Kings. As I have done since Walt Williams was there. On the 360. Never tried the Online League/Tourney Stuff. Anyone fancies showing me the ropes add me Gamertag is CW484

  • Jake

@Enigmatic.I’ve gone through 3 seasons with the Thunder so far.I signed Allen Iverson, lost in the finals my first year and then beat the Heat in a game 7 after trading Iverson and Jeff Green,2 picks for John Wall. The downside is that the game developers still haven’t changed the fact that every free agent with an 80 rating or more wants an absurd amount of money, and eventually every team is way over the cap so you have guys like Dirk,Kobe and even Carmelo Anthony sitting a year out while cap space is cleared.

  • http://www.bulls.com Enigmatic

@Jake – yeah man, every time anyone over like, 75 becomes a free agent after their rookie contract, you gotta expect to pay at least $12 mil a year for their services, it’s ridiculous. You almost have to draft amazing rookies every year and hope they resign with you as they can go over the salary cap and hard cap.

  • http://www.triplejunearthed.com/dacre Dacre

@Danny_W_UK – WALT WILLIAMS SIGHTING! Excellent stuff.
    ______
@Enigmatic – I agree on the assistant/draft thing. I pretty much scout all my own guys for the draft – I’m already looking for Josh Childress’ replacement. His jumpshot is uglier than the matrix’s…what happened in Europe boy?!
    _____
@Bryan Crawford – your MyPlayer character, what are his specs??? I’ve gone the way of the ‘creative myself as close as possible’ Although I’ve used a Steve Nash mold, so maybe thats not all that accurate a statement to make on my part. I’ve played 2 “draft combine” games and am horribly ‘rookie-like’ with my stat line.

  • The Drosen 1

I’ve noticed a few things so far:
The Pacers are GOOD. Dahntey Jones beats up opponents like…too soon? The ball handling issue needs to fixed asap. I’m not a fan of auto-assigning names to bench players in the Jordan Challenge. Other than that, I’m hooked.

  • http://www.kb24.com The Seed

Completing the 10 tasks in the Jordan Challenge opens up the Creating a Legend mode in NBA 2K11. However for those who are struggling to get through all 10 or are simply not interested in the challenges an unlock code for the Legend mode has surfaced.

To unlock Creating a Legend mode go to the main menu – features – extras – codes. From there enter: icanbe23. Make sure to save the settings file after doing so.

Creating a Legend mode involves drafting a rookie Michael Jordan to a team of choice and playing through his career in the NBA of today. It is essentially My Player mode only progressing through with Jordan rather than a created player. It also means starting at a 79 rating rather than the 30 something rating you get stuck with in My Player

    BOOK IT!!!

  • Morgan

@The Seed – do you know if you can still get the My Player achievements in the Creating a Legend mode?? I’m struggling to beat out John f***ing Wall for Rookie of the Year because the guy is putting up beasting stats – plus there is only so much you can do when you’ve played most of the season with a rating in the 50s.

  • G-R-egg

Anyone play online yet? I’m having trouble getting into ranked games…like it takes YEARS to matchmake. I hope 2K gets on this…I need to ball online!!!!

  • http://www.acb.com Alan

I’m having big troubles connecting. It seems not to work many times, and when it does it doesn’t matchmake reasonably fast (less than 5 min, just can’t wait more) But the game is great and I love it. Jordan Challenge is great and classic teams too.

  • http://www.borntocompete.com Money$hot

I have grown a Gilbert Arenas beard playing this game.

  • http://www.twitter.com/jtrain73 Jono

What teams u guys using on association mode?

  • For 3

Why is this game so different from 2k10?? I do not like the way you drive to the whole, it seems choppy, and not near as smooth as 2k10… The way the players go to the whole is much more difficult, and the way they move is not near as good as 2k10…

  • Cory

Does anyone know how to create a team using players from the classic teams? I can’t seem to do it

  • Mason

how do u get iverson in the game?? i can’t find him?!?!?!?!?! please help!!!
