Links: NBA 2K11 Review

Finally, it’s in the game…

by Lang Whitaker | @langwhitaker

I’ve spent the last two weeks dealing with health issues. First my own, battling the flu, and then my wife’s. I missed a couple of days of work, couldn’t travel to Atlanta for Bobby Cox’s final regular season game, couldn’t even do the podcast on NBA.com yesterday with Sekou.

All, however, was not lost. I received a copy of NBA 2K11 over a week ago, and every night, once things were quiet and everyone was snug in their bed, I’ve been settling down to attempt to recreate the legacy of Michael Jordan. And it has been nothing short of awesome.

2k11I was planning on writing a column for today’s Links comparing and contrasting NBA Elite 11 and NBA 2K11, which were both supposed to drop today, October 5. Until last week, when, just days before the game was set to hit store shelves, EA Sports announced they were indefinitely delaying Elite.

Instead, all we’ve got dropping today is NBA 2K11, so let’s get right to it: This is the best basketball video game ever released. And one of the deepest sports video games of all time.

2K11 not only has the Jordan Challenge mode, which I previewed here, but you can also play online, you can play franchise mode, you can play the My Player mode, the streetball mode… put it this way: I’ve spent about 15-20 hours on 2K11 and have barely scratched the surface.

I’ve written in the past about basketball video games and how the basic nature of video games keeps them from accurately relaying a true basketball experience. Part of the fun of basketball is the improvisational nature of the game, and it’s always been pretty much impossible to translate that to video games, which rely on structure and formulas. But to me, 2K11 is the closest we’ve come to accurately replicating it. For the first time I can recall in a game, 2K11 pretty much nails defensive switches. For instance, I was playing an ‘86 Bulls/Celtics game with the Bulls, and I missed a shot and the Celts got the ball and threw an outlet to Danny Ainge. I scrambled back to defend and the first guy who got back was Charles Oakley, and he (obviously) cut off Ainge’s drive. Ainge pulled the ball back out, and Oakley just naturally picked him on defense as the Celts set up their halfcourt offense. This is something that would probably happen in an NBA game, but hasn’t always happened in NBA video games.

What pushed things to another level was that Michael Jordan had to pick up Oakley’s man, Robert Parrish, and the Celtics ran a play for Parrish in the post against the smaller defender! Ainge dumped it down to Parrish, I ran down and doubled him as Oakley, and Parrish threw it back out to a wide-open Ainge for a three-pointer.

One facet of the game I’d like to see 2K address next year is the ballhandling. I’m not sure if the NBA Elite demo is still online, but the thing I really enjoyed about the demo was the new dribbling system. By utilizing both joysticks, you really had a terrific amount of control over your player. In 2K11 the ballhandling is responsive, and the more you use the isomotion controls the better you become at it, but it still feels as though there’s some luck involved with getting your guy to do exactly what you want him to do. At the same time, this isn’t NBA Street. It’s not easy to shake loose from guys, and you need to be smart when calling for a pick or an iso. Just like in the NBA.

Still, the first week or so I was playing the game, at least once in each game I went in to do a move with MJ, and I hit the dunk/layup button, and he broke off something that made me blurt out “Oh!” When’s the last time a video game pulled an audible reaction from you when you were playing alone? It’s also pretty awesome getting to play against, say, the 1986 Celtics, and remembering just how bad-ass Larry Bird, Dennis Johnson, Kevin McHale and the others were.

One other visual thing jumped out at me, and it’s really miniscule but it did intrude on my gameplaying experience a few times: For some reason when players have their white socks pulled up to their knees, the socks continually turn black from different angles, almost as if they’re hypercolor or something. I’m guessing 2K will fix this when they release the next patch.

I’m sure I’ll get around to playing My Player mode or The Association mode eventually, but for now it’s still me and MJ. It took me about a week, but I finally completed step one of the Jordan Challenge: Play against the 1986 Celtics, score 63+ points, shoot at least 50 percent from the floor and have at least 6 assists. For some insane reason I decided to try and accomplish this using 8 minute quarters, and I spent much of that time cursing the Celtics for constantly slowing the tempo. It was hard to get the Bulls to score 63 points, much less Michael Jordan alone. But eventually, the other night he finally did it. I mean, I did it. Actually, I guess we did it, Mike and I, together. (Next up, trying to put 70 on the Cavs. Craig Ehlo, get ready.)

As EA and 2K have battled for dominance in the NBA video game market the last few years, pushing each other to improve their games, the real winner has been those of us who play video games. This year, if you’re in the market for an NBA video game, you don’t have a choice. But with NBA 2K11, I don’t think you’re going to be disappointed.

How many of y’all would be willing to start up a Slam 2k11 online tournament? Please grown man console only aka PS3.

  • derby

does anyone know when is dropping in europe(holland specificly)??

    Great place for Sim playing

  • Chris6

    Slam 2k11 tournament?hell yeah!!!I’m definitely in!!!

  • http://www.slamonline.com Eboy

Picked it up this morning, counting the hours till I’m at the house to play, will cut off for a couple of hours to check the Heat game, then play till I can’t keep my eyes open tonight. Thanks for the review Lang. Sounds like the 2K team hit it out of the park. BTW, while I was at Gamestop this morning, they were playing a commercial for it in-store that had Rondo, D-Rose, Andre Iquodala and a couple of other dudes. It deserves a link of it’s own. If I can find it, I’ll link it to a comment. Rose and Rondo had a couple of great lines in it. There were 15 dudes lined up to by it at the store opening. This game is going to be huge. I don’t think I’ve ever seen that for a sports game before.

  • http://slamonline.com Kap

I picked the game up at midnite but from the few minutes I got to play before I fell asleep, I noticed it is pretty difficult to score which is a big difference from previous games where you could score 50+ points with any player you wished.

  • larrylegend

    @derby: 8th of october, finally!

  • derby

@larry thanks ,yeah,i had to cancel the booking for 11 elite because of all those “mistakes” that EA would fix and i booked for 2K(after 8 years as a true EA fan),anyway im very happy, i didnt expect it would be only 3 days later than in the U.S

  • http://slamonline.com Allenp

    Dammit.
I was honestly hoping the game would suck so I could save my $60, but now I must shell it out if it’s this awesome. this is the second person calling it the greatest game of all-time.

  • http://slamonline.com Allenp

Oh yeah, I have a PS3, but I’m wondering why it’s called the “grown man console”? Is there a huge difference between it and a 360?

  • Ronald

@Allenp: The main differences is the Blue-ray and Xbox live (not much anymore seeing how PSN was introduced). As most companies make games for both systems at the same time the quality difference of the games are negligible (some games have better frame rate on the Xbox due to ease of programming on the xbox vs ps3 but the PS3 is actually more powerful specs wise) but both are archaic in terms of specs in 2010.

  • http://www.slamonline.com Eboy

Allen, I have the PS3 too…..not sure why it’s the “grown man console” either. Weird.

  • Ronald

*differences are. Oh, and thanks for the review Lang. Can’t wait to get my hands on a copy.

  • http://www.slamonline.com Eboy

    Wow….Ronald is THAT guy.

  • http://slamonline.com Allenp

Yeah, I always hear about “frame rate” but I’m not even sure what it means. I know it’s not good to have a low one.
And if PS3 and Xbox are archaic, what exactly is top notch and how much does it cost?

  • hammer

PS3 baby! Its the ONLY way 2 go

  • http://sdfjklfl.com Jukai

All-Time Legends Team I’m creating first thing when I snag this game today: Magic, Stockton, Jordan, Kobe, Larry, Pippen, Barry, Lebron, Duncan, Hakeem, Chamberlain, Jabbar.
Putting the game on ultra hard and just seeing how much cool sh*t I can do.
    Psychedddddddddddddd.

  • http://slamonline.com JL

I agree totally Lang! I tried the elite demo and the thing I liked most was the handling and then I tried to 2k demo and the handling felt outdated. almost enough to make me want to switch. it’s good that elite is delayed so my choice is simple.

@AllenP I think JTaylor meant Grown men only, and console aka PS3. Come to think of it, maybe not. Maybe he did mean the grown men only console is ps3? No idea why. lol. but that guy has some opinions that’s for sure.

  • T-Money

Can. Not. Wait. To. Get. Off. Work.

  • Rich

Grown man system = PC. Quad core dual video card > any PS3, XBOX, or any other console.

  • Ronald

@Allenp: Archaic because technology has surpassed itself over the last few years in computer terms (and both the xbox and the ps3 are in essence small computers), however because both Microsoft and PS3 are pushing the shelf life of the consoles further and further (with the introduction of PSMove and Kinect) there isn’t an alternative unless you buy a top-end PC (but there isn’t the same plethora of games on the PC as there are on consoles). Framerate is basically the number of screens shown on screen per second and both consoles run at best 30fps (take into consideration that a top end PC running the same game can clock over 80 and sometimes 100+). But the PS3 is good for value if you want Blue-ray because it does have the best Blu-ray software playing capabilities (doesn’t need start up etc etc). If you look at just graphics the PS3 will give (maybe) better textures (tiny details on images) but will have more crooked edges and the xbox360 will give you better FPS and brighter images with lower details on textures. But the difference is honestly negligible. @JL and Lang: I was also extremely impressed with the dribbling on Elite and I like how it shows you the x-y axis on the screen during the practice sessions, honestly gives you a great feel.

  • http://nicekicks.com meloman2.0

i had an hour and a half break between classes which i usually use to get some food and go to the washroom… But 2k had me hooked so now I’m sitting in class with an empty stomach and a full blatter

  • http://www.bulls.com Enigmatic

    What. T-Money. Said.

  • larrylegend

Ronald is right, ps3 has mos def more power, but 98% of the publisher can’t take advantage of this, and i expect a ps4 before they push the ps3 to the limit. in fact, most multiplatform games are better on xbox. and people who call the ps3 grown-man console, are ignorant fanboys or a victim of the sony marketing. i didn’t expect anything else from JTaylor21…on another note, i can’t believe what ea has done to my beloved nba live series, i played em all, since the early 90ies, but since 2k08 i am done with ea.
    @allenp: stick to ur ps3, and u will be fine ;-) .
would love to have a SLAM onlinetourney or league, count me in?
or, if lang has such good connections to 2k, how about a SLAM online ranking, just connect 2k rankings with SLAM online….
damn, still have to wait till friday…

  • The D Train

Seriously sweeter than a sh1t-dipped cherry. Right out the box and it’s Magic v. Michael in their classic Finals match. MJ knifes through the lane with 2.1 secs left to send the game to OT. Pax hits a ‘uge (shout out to Hubie Brown) trey and MJ knocks down the clinching FT’s. First game and I’m ultra-impressed. Sleepy Sam is slow and more wily than the coyote that bears the name, Worthy is a straight monster driving down the lane and throwing it down my gullet a couple of times, and Pippen is an other-worldly defender. Just like the real thing, this game changed in my favor as soon as I switched him to Magic. Really, really impressive by the 2K folks. I cannot imagine any of you cats being disappointed. We may have our different views on players and life, but I am pretty sure we’ll all be in agreement that this game is top-notch.

  • http://www.slamonline.com Eboy

I almost popped off reading D Train’s assessment.

  • http://brimartin13@gmail.com Brion

Now if they could find out a way to make it so people cant quit when yur spanking them

  • Brandon

Its not a battle when there is one game doing all the punching. 2k Pwned Live, and sent it to its grave. EA now released Elite and it went down faster than (Insert name) when they fought Mike Tyson in 88.

2k11 is a 9.9/10, greatest sports game ever released, IMO…

    Peace.

  • http://www.slamonline.com Migs

LOL @ the term “grown man console”… anyone who’s still starting beef between one console and another needs to grow up a bit…

@AllenP – the architecture behind the 360 and the PS3 is quite different. While both rely on a 3.2Ghz CPU, the PS3 has more power under the hood on paper because it has 7 single-threaded cores vs the xbox’s 3 dual-threaded cores. But the PS3 is harder for developers to program for, so you’ll sometimes see better graphics on 360 games that come out for both systems. I think it’s getting better though as they get used to utilizing the PS3′s strengths.

Back to the “grown man” argument though – the 360 actually has a bigger controller if that matters :p

  • http://dfsjkl.com Jukai

It’s true, I own the PS3 because of the Bluray, but my roommate has an XBox and generally the games are just better on them. PS3 is a better system but it simply isn’t utilized and many games are made on the XBox first and ported over. I wouldn’t trade it in, but it’s just what I’ve seen.

  • http://dfsjkl.com Jukai

Eboy: I know what you mean. I’m sporting a half chubby all throughout this workday after reading the preview.
    I. Need. This. Now.

  • http://slamonline.com Lang Whitaker

Yeah, D-Train nailed one thing I didn’t mention, which is as soon as you turn on the game, you’re in the middle of action with MJ. Also forgot to mention they have the Bulls’ Allen Parsons Project theme music in the game, too.

  • http://slamonline.com Lang Whitaker

Also, once you guys get the game and play it, give me your opinions here in the comments section. I wrote that it’s the best basketball game ever made, but I’d like to hear your opinions on it also.

  • http://www.bulls.com Enigmatic

Console wars? We talkin bout console wars? I don’t give a damn about the console wars! This is NBA 2k11! Man…we talkin bout console wars…

  • http://dfsjkl.com Jukai

Lang: My opinion is you should get a mohawk. Birdman style. Sport that sh*t bro.

  • http://slamonline.com Tzvi Twersky

I look forward to spending many, many hours with Mike.

  • http://slamonline.com Lang Whitaker

@Jukai: You won’t be able to see it under my Braves hat.

  • http://www.slamonline.com Eboy

Uhm…..I can only imagine that Lebron would be the PS3 (the unit that does everything) and that Kobe would be the 360 (the one that looks better on the surface and is a more popular choice but has less ability than it’s rival). Yes?

  • http://dfsjkl.com Jukai

Eboy: Can we talk about how the N64 (Jordan) was better than both of them and explain why? (just mention Mario Kart and Goldeneye over and over again)

  • http://slamonline.com Matt Lawyue

Gallo – Morrow rematch, Lang. I demand it.

  • http://www.slamonline.com Eboy

    Goldeneye was gangsta.

  • http://slamonline.com Kap

    So is Wade the Wii?

  • Ronald

@Eboy: Not really a great comparison. I don’t know why you bother, cause the PS3 is the more popular choice and the only thing the PS3 does extra is the blu-ray, yet the 360 has a better online service (notice how PSN is copying Xbox Live system). Sigh. Nevermind. This is a pointless debate. Get both if you can afford it.

  • http://slamonline.com Lang Whitaker

I used to spend entire weekends playing Mario Kart with my friends. That wasn’t really a productive time in our lives.

  • Ronald

And Jordan was obviously the PSOne. The Playstation.

  • Bruno

it seems like eboy can’t hide his love for Kobe not even in a video game link

  • JTaylor21

Damn, my mailman decided to pick this day out of every other day to take his sweet a** time. He got me looking out the window every 20 seconds like Anne Frank (rip).

  • Ronald

    Jordan = PSOne!

  • http://www.slamonline.com Eboy

“He got me looking out the window every 20 seconds like Anne Frank (rip).” I like how he added (rip)….that’s some funny sh*t.

  • http://www.slamonline.com Eboy

    CP3=PSP

  • http://slamonline.com Kap

Wow…thats two holocaust references for JTaylor in one day.

    Dreamcast = TMAC

  • The D Train

I am hesitant to proclaim any game the best ever of its sort after only a little over an hour, but this has the potential to be the best ever, easily. The details are crazy-accurate. The sheer amount of early-era MJ dunks are astounding. Larry Bird’s awful hair and mustache are fantastic. The inability to get a single rebound against the greatest front line in history is spot-on. The ability to dunk on Larry Bird’s head with a coked-out Orlando Woolridge is something a young D-Train dreamed about oh so many years ago. The best thing I can say about 2K is that I was worried that with the inclusion of MJ and classic 90′s teams, along with the glowing reviews (as noted earlier, IGN called it the best sports game ever), I might feel a bit disappointed. Much like when an completely over-hyped Lebron came into the league, then proceeded to actually exceed the hype, I think 2K11 will do the same thing. In my opinion Lang’s last line in the write-up is the last word on this game…no matter how high your expectations may soar.

  • Terra

I wanna play in the slam tournament vyseTERRA on ps3 get at me

  • http://stapledesign.com Spaceship Jay

@ Jukai- You forgot to mention Wrestlemania 2000 on N64.. There hasn’t been a finer wrestling game since.

  • http://www.michaelcho.com M Cho

Just picked this up. I’m not gonna front — I’ve bought other games for my PS3, but the only ones that I ever play for more than a day or two are 2K. I played 2k10 till just a week ago, so I’m sure 2k11 will be stuck in my PS3 for another year.

  • The D Train

In the interest of full disclosure: the classic teams feature several John Doe’s in the place of guys they must not have been able to clear rights with. So unfortunately, all you Greg Ostertag fans out there will probably be a little disappointed.

  • http://slamonline.com Allenp

I wasted so much time in college playing Goldeneye and MarioKart with my friends. I don’t play shooters too often now and Golden Eye remains the golden standard for me.
Good times man. Good effing times!

  • http://slamonline.com Lang Whitaker

D-Train makes a good point that I forgot to mention: The old teams aren’t 100-pct accurate. But they’re pretty close.

  • http://slamonline.com Lang Whitaker

And shouldn’t MJ be the Genesis?

  • http://slamonline.com Kap

Why does the announcers keep talking about Worthy’s ankle?

  • The D Train

@Kap: Worthy was hurt in those playoffs. I think he was hobbled most of the Finals and missed the last game of the series.

  • http://www.slamonline.com Eboy

I can’t believe they are THAT accurate. Damn.

  • http://hibachi20.blogspot.com Moose

Man, I hate how these games/consoles cost so much. 300 bucks total for the console, game, and two controllers?? I can’t wait till I’m old enough to get a job. And I’d bum a few plays off of my friends but they’re too busy playing COD that they aren’t wasting anything on sports games. C’mon.

  • http://www.need4sheed.com Tarzan Cooper

Will be buying this soon, and new cod next month. Ill be set for the year

  • http://thephotoriot.com davidR

nah, jordan is either the PSOne or SNES. either of those two consoles are the greatest of all time. just count all the classics that dropped on either of them

  • billaras kats

Why is PS3 named the grown man console?
Because Gran Turismo 5 is going to be released in less than 2 months only on PS3 of course…
2k11 and GT5 means 120 euros and the feeling I’m a 15 year old again!!

  • Bassbesteck

first off: Jordan is the Super Nintendo (come on, that’s obvious)

second: Preordered it in like June on Amazon. On PC. Because that’s the grown man’s console. Just need a good setup! Q4 ftw^^

  • http://www.boogiewilliams.com Boing Dynasty

I completely forgot about this dropped today, soon as i saw this post i ran out to cop. Good looking out Lang(in a round-about kind of way). Now that i got a few games(wins) under my belt, i feel comfortable in saying its the best sports game ive ever played, the dribble moves arnt as smooth as last year but the graphics are on some other level(esp on replay & end of game hi-lights). That SLAM online league is not a bad idea either but in the meantime who ever wanna run 1 get @ me, MAKE_IT_REIGN_2K on the “grown man system”.

  • bails1

Lang as a fan of your columns i will check it out. However, i have been a live guy since 95 and every year i hear how superior 2k is so I’ll check it out and I’m always like ehhhh. With them pushing elite back i basically have no choice. I only play live and and madden as far as video games go and love getting fired up for the new season by getting live the day it comes out and playing until my eyes bleed. So to the 2k crowd you win im gonna grab the jordan game and give it a shot. I just hope it doesnt remind me of dreamcast like previous titles.

  • http://slamonline.com Saviour

Bails1….please think before you write. Live died 2 versions back, it absolutely SUCKS.

  • dahive

no 92/93 suns classic team? fail!

  • hoodsnake

    What Enigmatic said.

  • aotearaw

Man, this thread has made me do a little sex wee. Have a whole two more days until we get it down here in NZ. This plus Black Ops will surely spell the demise of my r/ship. P.S: How is xbox live’s online system better than PS3’s when you have to pay a monthly subscription fee?

  • http://sdklff.com Jukai

dahive: No one is more upset about that than I am. But if that’s the biggest blemish on this perfect fruit, I’ll deal.

  • http://slamonline.com nbk

ya’ll can blame charles barkley for that one jukai. he wouldn’t agree to being put in the game, and 2k refused to use teams without a full 100% authentic roster

  • The D Train

@nbk: None of the classic teams have a full 100% authentic roster. Some of them just got 5 or 6 real players, then put in some John Doe’s.

  • Jake

So after lots of redbull, coffee, hungry man dinners and pure will power I’ve just got done playing this game for almost 14 hours straight.Got the day off work and dedicated the day to MJ and Me.The only complaints I have so far is the eyes in the backs of their head that defensive players have…If you throw an outlet pass farther than 20 feet it’s getting intercepted. The other thing that is annoying me is throwing alley oops, and the player you’re throwing to just stands there and looks at the ball probably 4-10 times. Now that being said,MJ looks downright scary close to real life, the presentation is the best since 2k5,soundtrack is dope, moves are amazing, and my favorite feature of all…you can take any of the players from classic teams and use them in franchise mode.I wanted to see how MJ and the Bulls would stand up to the current stud teams and I’ve found great joy dunking in LeBron’s face over and over and over with MJ.For those of you that don’t have the game….GET IT!

  • JTaylor21

The first words to describe this game is COWABUNGA! Anyways just lost to the ’91 Lakers by 3 (HOF by the way) on an and1 by JWorthy (dude is unarguable so watch out) and Magic plays exactly like the real one. 2K11 is definitely tougher than last year’s version, the dribbling is the hardest by far though it would probably take some getting used to and the shooting form is different than last years. It’s one of those few games that demands your undivided and undisturbed attention for the entire 48. I was playing the 92 Blazers but took a half-time break to say that whoever doesn’t have this game yet should ASAP cuz this ish is ARCHIE BONKERS!!!

  • http://slamonline.com nbk

all of those teams are 100% authentic man.

  • The D Train

@nbk: Looking right at the game, man. Please tell me who this Richard Johnson is that was on the 89-90 Bulls, but also the 85-86 Celts, the 89-90 Hawks, and the 89-90 Cavs? And please tell me why the 89-90 Pistons don’t have The Microwave or John Salley. Sorry dude, but these rosters are far from 100% authentic, man. Not sure where you are getting your info…

  • http://www.need4sheed.com Tarzan Cooper

Jake has problems. And I will be buying this game in a couple days.

  • gani

2k11 comes out friday here in the philippines and i can’t wait to buy it.

  • http://slamonline.com nbk

I was reading a developer insight. I hadn’t actually checked the rosters. Looks like false advertisement, my fault.

  • http://thetroyblog.com Teddy-the-Bear

    Thanks for the review, Lang.
Also, props to Jake for the heads up.

  • http://thetroyblog.com Teddy-the-Bear

Best basketball game ever made, besides 2K1 for Dreamcast (and probably this one–haven’t played it yet) is NBA SHOWTIME FOR THE N64. IT PLAYS THE NBA ON NBC THEME MUSIC AND YOU CAN PLAY AS THE MASCOT FOR ANY TEAM. AND IT’S JUST ALL AROUND F*CKING CRAZY!!! No sarcasm, seriously an awesome game.

  • Jake

@Tarzan-I’m an MJ addict, this game is what I’ve been wishing(and writing the 2k developers twice a year)for since I was 12 years old. That’s 11 years of writing and maybe, just maybe it paid off.Anyway,it’s about time someone released a game with some classic teams in it…now if only they would start releasing NBA video games with full rosters from the 80′s and 90′s so you could do franchises and draft Penny,Dyess,Grant Hill…and other players to see what they would have been like injury free.

  • http://slamonline BossTerry

I’ve been loyal to EA sports since 95′, but I think this year, I may have to make a change..

  • http://slamonline BossTerry

@Teddy.. U remember Arch Rivals for the NES..? Steal the ball by punching dude in the face.. Awesome game (for its time)

  • str8 from samoa

DAMN GOTTA WAIT TILL FRIDAY TO GET IT HERE IN NEW ZEALAND

  • http://www.kb24.com The Seed

I was going to wait to buy, since everyone is giving it props, might have to shell out the money now. Been playing the mess out of Madden 11 online, so really didn’t need another game right now. Also whats up with this PS3 mess, Xbox 360 is the junk. XBOX LIVE can’t be beat. BOOK IT!!

  • http://www.facebook.com/#!/profile.php?id=100000580635564 Bryan

I have both a PS3 and an XBOX360 and I bought a seasons worth of sports games for the ps3, all the 2009 edition games and it was enough to get me to buy a new 360. The PS3 is retired to my bedroom now where it’s used exclusively as a blu ray player.

X Box 360 is the better console, but the fact that it makes you pay for online gaming is just f*cking annoying. PS3 and Wii both have free online/internet, yet for X Box you have to pay an additional fee. It’s not like X Box is as cheap as the Wii either…

Nah Terry, I wish but the first system we copped as kids was the SNES (well, the original Gameboy first)… Great console too. We had an NCAA game for it, I’m afraid there was no punching in it. I need to play Bill Laimbeer’s Combat Basketball some day…

DAMN, Ice Cube himself couldn’t have scripted a better day for me! Work was hella boring as always, but right afterwards I picked up NBA 2K11 at Gamestop, headed home and the newest SLAM was in my mailbox! Word? As a testament to how much I love SLAM, I had to think about what I was gonna do first, play NBA 2K or read the SLAM….I decided to compromise and read a little in between quarters of action.

I already had asked for the day off tomorrow cause I KNEW I’d be up late playing this game. So far, it looks dope as hell!

  • http://www.michaelcho.com M Cho

Ok, I just spent four hours playing this and it’s definitely for real so far. The AI has really been tweaked nicely — especially on defensive switching. 2k11 plays way smoother than last year’s version, there’s more responsiveness on controls which leads to less frustration at waiting for canned animations to finish up. You just feel more in control of the game. And yeah — the Jordan mode and intro is crazy cool. I’m betting there’ll be a lot of cheesers trying beat those challenges just so they can draft MJ onto their Heat squad – LOL.

  • http://www.michaelcho.com M Cho

Bottom line — this game gave me goosebumps. 4 hours in and it’s definitely the best 2k yet. And I’ve bought every one of them so far.

    THE AUSTRALIAN REVIEW:
G’Day folks. I brought my copy home today (Wednesday)and have been playing it since 6pm. It’s now 1:30am (Thursday). I’ve peeled back the case, popped the disc in with my heart skipping a beat. The intro is amazing and the FIRST you load the disc your put STRAIGHT into a game…. Lakers -vs- Bulls. UNCANNY…. I almost cried at the first inbounds… the beauty if the gameplay is what gets you first. The nuances of each and every players character and traits jumps out you.

  • http://www.triplejunearthed.com/dacre Dacre

I had Scottie looking to rebound and lead the brake, I’m PROUD TO SAY MY FIRST BASKET WAS A TONI KUKOC CORNER THREE, followed beautifully by SCOTTIE YOKING IT SEVERELY ON SAM PERKINS….what got me next was masterful though, a hesitation cross over and MJ finding a baseline spot… up and around he makes a patented circus lay up! I paused the game for a few minutes and came back with clean pants.

@Lang: 2k’s controls have a bit of a steep learning curve, that luck you speak of is only because you arent really familiar with them, but once you get the hang of it (and remember what does which move) it’s as responsive as lives and looks better. Elites controls are good i’ll give it that but the problem is that it’s too “arcadey”, i did the same moves with bynum that i did with rondo and that’s a no no

  • unrel

2k11?.. vaginas?.. can’t we put them together in a perfect world?..

  • JTaylor21

Anybody that claims to have completed any of those MJ challenges especially the 55 and 63 is lying out their a** (unless you’re playing in the easier modes). It’s damn near impossible to score that many points in only 8 min quarters and win the game without extreme ball-hogging. I stick to association mode for now until I get used to the iso-motion and shot stick. I’m be playing this game non-stop until COD come out.

So Elite isn’t going to be released THIS YEAR?! Oh no, so it ain’t so! Seriously, can anyone tell me when Elite might be released?

  • The D Train

Admittedly only play on All-Star level, but I’ve got the first 3 challenges done. It’s not easy, but I’ve found pick and roll’s, and iso’s do work pretty well. I had a harder time against Cleveland because Hot Rod Williams and Daugherty kept bodying me up whenever I drove down the lane. The ‘Nique showdown wasn’t too bad because I switched to a zone after he put up 13 on me in the first quarter, and used MJ to box-and-one him, basically. All that being said, I’m not the ultra-stud gamer who rocks HOF’er. I’m not trying to prove my video game prowess to anyone, I’m just trying to unwind/enjoy them.

  • 80y4n

This version really improved gameplay for me.ATM I am playing in Jordan challenge mode, havent tried any other, and I can say that they created deep and interesting game, without making it too arcade like. Jordan is a perfect baller 99 overall in stats except in season 85-86 i think, where he is 93. His speed and ball handling skills are superior to everyones else, but still you cant drive to the hoop anytime you wish. Opposition closes the lanes, and they use handchecks to slow you down, so you need to do the crossovers, hesitation dribbles etc, to create space for yourself, but the trick is to do these moves before you make the contact with the player whos guarding you, otherwise he will slow you down or youll get pressured back. This is one of the most important things they changed as i really didnt like the previous version which allowed for easy drives to the hoop. Not that it is hard to get to the basket now, but it makes you work more, at least while we learning to play

  • 80y4n

Btw I am playing it on PC and in my mind graphics is the same as last year.Same textures, same artistic style, even same bugs with missing heads of some players in replay are still there. Maybe they use a bit more depth of field effect now(They blur out everything that is not in the focus. For example if Jordan is in front of the camera and being in focus, everything behind thats further then him is being blurred out or out of focus.)Animation is excellent and there is a ton of new moves and animations, that look really lifelike. Not to mention improvements to the AI department and gameplay elements that make this game really enjoyable. In a way this is a much better product then I expected, and regardless of the tiny(if any as programmers say they did, but…) upgrade in graphics department, this game is a huge step forward, as it improved the most important thing that games are about, and that is gameplay. Small glitches are really nothing to worry about, and youll barely notice them, as they dont tarnish this wonderful game.

  • The D Train

80y4n makes a great point: it is imperative that you do your dribble moves before the defender bodies you up. You can cross over even Joe Dumars if you line up your shoulders and keep him from getting on you. Once the defender touches you, they have the ability to re-direct you, and that makes it much harder to get a clean shot off.

  • JTaylor21

@Orlando, that’s like asking when will the shoe bomber be released.

  • http://www.slamonline.com Lang Whitaker

Good point guys about doing the dribble moves before the defender hand-checks you or bodies you. I was struggling to get around Ainge with Jordan, but once I ran isos and created a little room, I’d do a move THEN turbo+drive and had a lot more success. Also, to reach the high point totals for Jordan, I’ve found it’s really important to get to the line and hit the free throws. it’s not that hard to draw fouls if you can drive the paint and attack the rim.

  • The D Train

Very true, Lang. I’ve found that driving the lane and getting some easy buckets, or even some contested ones (because MJ can definitely get some of those), and knocking down your freebies gives you a good start. If you get MJ red-hot, you can start knocking down jumpers and turnarounds (well, maybe not 1986-MJ, but every other one nails a pretty nice percentage once he’s hot). I also found that playing MJ off the ball, then letting Pippen dribble-drive can open up some opps for MJ. It’s really a testament to how nice this game is that you have to go to those lengths to score with Jordan. I played a spell with Derrick Rose, and it’s not even remotely the same. 2K managed to make a guy who is rated 99 overall be unstoppable, without being totally unstoppable, if that makes any sense.

  • http://www.twitter.com/JoshElam JE

I owned every NBA Live from 2000 to 2010, and the only 2K I ever owned was 2K2 (although my roommate a couple years ago owned 2K8 and I played that a lot). I personally thought that NBA Live 09 and 10 were very good, but I wasn’t about to not buy a game that has Jordan on the cover. Now that NBA Live is no longer called “NBA Live”, I don’t even feel guilty about it. Now, my thoughts. I love it, but I suck at it right now. It took me five games to even get a win, and that happened when I stopped playing decent competition and hammered the Raptors with the ’97 Bulls team. I’ve read most of the comments above, and I do agree with the frustrations of the defense intercepting long passes nearly 100% of the time. But, what doesn’t kill us makes us stronger. Buy this game.

  • http://kb24.com Bigi

  • stever3434

Anyone else having trouble passing? The players move while the ball is in the air, or just dont stop moving when your setting up the offense. The computer steals the ball like every other trip (not that you pass too much in the jordan challenges).

  • 80y4n

@stever3434 The problem in the previous versions was that easy passing system allowed easy breakdown of the defence, thats why now is alot harder to throw the ball to the center if you are on top of the key or behind the 3 point line in the middle and defense is in position. But now you are able to pass the ball to the player in the low post if you standing diagonally in relation to his position, just like in the real basketball, when ball is fed to the post and these passes rarely get picked and have a higher success rate.It is one of the “realistic” things they incorporated into gameplay which made it just a lil bit better and enjoyable. :P

  • http://alan.george@gmail.com Breeze

Well obviously this year thier not allowing the long court lobs ..or the full court bounce passes ..you actually have to play with precision and bring the bal up with the point guard …the dribble moves are not as fluent as last year ..but i like the shot better this year..i think most of the jordan challenges are fairly easy if youre a 2k player except the series one and the dominque one….okc is a monster in this game as well as the nuggets..this is the best 2k yet ..and i cant wait to get on teh my player mode. oh any of you doing teh jordan challenges if you get hott enough and jordans full with energy ..meaning no G next to his name.. i dunk straight from the free throw line in a game on a fast break with mark price trailing …crazy!

  • stever3434

I get that, its def more realistic. But in basketball you can still pass the ball down the court and accross the court ocasionlly. My biggest frustration is when the team is comming down the court and setting up offense. I try and pass the ball to one of the wings comming down the floor and the guy keeps running and it turns into an intercepted pass in the corner instead of a pass at the wing. I read about the problem on IGN as well and he said it best, when did Peja get esp and learn to turn is back to the ball and then run across court to steal the pass without as i press the pass button. Its an awesome game, thats just my biggest problem with it. Still the best BBall game ever though.

  • http://www.slamonline.com Lang Whitaker

I’ve had some trouble with the passing. Full-court passing is pretty much impossible to pull off unless the guy is wide open, which makes it really hard to push the tempo. Hoping 2K will address that in a patch.

  • Frankie!

I didnt read all the comments, but for everybody from Holland, Its dropping Oct 15th..
    Im defntly gettin it

  • JTaylor21

Lang, doesn’t it seem like the jump-shot is much harder than last year’s version because even when a very good shooter is wide open he tends to miss way more than he makes. Like I’m the Heat and Miller is getting open shot after open shot but still hasn’t made one. It seems like you have to hold down the shooting button for a little longer than before. Also the AI’s stealing ability is outrageous because any body even a center will snatch a pass out of mid-air even with his back turned but it also makes it much more challenging because you just can’t be running and gunning like in 2k10 when the score was regularly in the high 100s, it’s in the mid 70s (8min QTs) for 2K11.

  • http://slamonline.com nbk

you can change the “mode” your playing in to be like 2k10. 2k11 is supposed to be as realistic as possible, so on default (under the proper difficulty) your supposed to be on a 100pt per 12 minute pace…relatively

  • http://slamonline.com nbk

12 minute *quarter* pace. 48 minute game

I played one Jordan Challenge so far…I was tired late last night but wanted to get one finished. I played the 98 Jazz/Bulls Final Game 6. I quickly glanced at the requirements to finish the challenge and went on my way. With the Jazz whipping the sh*t out of me throughout the first quarter (up by 14 at one point) Michael and Scottie started to do their thing. By the end of the 1st half, I was within 5. Michael was toasty through the third and went into the 4th quarter with 38. I finished the Jazz off with tough perimiter D, good ball movement and when Mike would get TRIPLE TEAMED, I’d kick it to Harper or Scottie for open J’s. I wound up winning the game by 7…..Mike scored 50, I had 6 rbs and 4 assists. I thought I I beat that challenge until I realized as I was brought back to the homescreen that I needed 4 STEALS, not assists. I was one pissed off motherfu*ker at 1:00a last night. And yeah, I turned the CPU sliders down on their ability to get steals and while there are still deflections, I’m able to get outlets down-court as long as I can see the defenders and have an open man past half court.

  • http://www.slamonline.com Eboy

BTW, I played game one of the Heat’s season against the Celts on HOF and whipped their as*es by 24. Lebron was monstrous. It’s pretty wild how the announcers were talking about the Heat looking good in their win over the Pistons in their first preseason game. That attention to detail is fuc*ing outstanding.

  • http://www.bluefont.com Hisham

@frankie: not true dude. Mediamarkt already had it since oct 6, and so do I!

  • Tim

Can you play the legends in the regular season mode? I hope so I’m tired of not being able to. Their was just one game that was able to put the legends onto teams in the season mode but first you had to unlock the legends to be able to have them as a playable person. I have the ps2 I don’t have the ps3 yet. Probably at tax time I’ll be able to get a ps3 finally.

  • http://www.bulls.com Enigmatic

The only thing I don’t like personally is I’m having a hard time trying to figure how to play in the post. Like, in the past alls you had to do was hold down L1 or L2 (PS3) and your guy would back his defender down in the post, then you could do a bunch of low-post moves with the right shotstick, depending on how good your guy was in the post. This year’s version you can’t do that, you gotta do something crazy with the left shotstick that I can’t figure out. It’s frustrating as hell, I used to salivate thinking about finally being able to play as a Bulls team with a low post scoring presence, but I haven’t been able to do sh*t with Boozer in the post (art imitating life, I guess, since the real-life Bulls will be without a low-post scorer for a while). Anyone else having these problems?

  • JTaylor21

Enigmatic, same here. I’ve being trying to get CB4 to back down in the post to no avail, so I just settle for long contested jumpers. I don’t know why they had to change the controls and make it already harder than it needs to be. The gameplay is already tough enough, especially the dribble moves and post game. It will probably take a while to get used to but I can’t complain because this game is already the BEST and most realistic of all-time.

  • http://slamonline.com nbk

you automatically post with both triggers. no matter where you are on the court. the rest is the same as the last 4 years.

  • http://slamonline.com nbk

its actually 100% easier then ever to post up, do post moves, and feel under control doing them.

  • http://www.bulls.com Enigmatic

And my wife will hate me.

  • http://slamonline.com riggs

Also at anyone having a hard time with passes and their being deflected, its because youre used to the old 2k’s way of passing, this year the person who youre passing to has to receive without any defenders contesting. at all.

  • http://slamonline.com nbk

@riggs – in my experience so far you just have to play slower. The more deliberate and organized you play the easier the game. But why in the world is Anthony Mason so whap….he beat me on a buzzer beater in the “double nickel” challenge to go along with his 18 points and 3 threes.

  • jrr4-pr

It is a great game but really really difficult one, specially on the offensive end. Im glad they made all the changes the did but why the hell did they change the way to shoot from the outside? it is so hard to hit jump shots even when one is wide open. And also the computer assisting on defense is overdue, almost every pass gets stolen! i was more than good on 2k10 but still finding my way on the new one.

  • G-R-egg

I’m actually okay with the jumpshot system, but I’ll agree that playing defense is one hell of a challenge. I still need a solid 7 hours straight of play-time to figure out how to stay in front of my man. I can’t tell you how many times thus far I’ve been completely blown by 1v1 and had to watch LeBron dunk on me. Any advice? (ps3)

now if 2k could just make a College Basketball game with the same gameplay as 2k11 all my prayers will have been answered

  • http://www.triplejunearthed.com/dacre Dacre

Hi folks. Hope everyones going well (my fractured hands healing well, thanks for asking). I’ve been giving 2k11 the bidnez this weekend (even whilst having my engagement party this weekend also!?) and I’m noticing a nice learning curve on my part. Okay here is how I roll:
*Association Mode – 10 min quarters. Pro Level. PHX Suns
    _____________________________________________________
I got my @$! handed back to myself first game of the season by Atlanta (I let them keep Crawford even though as of right now he’s not resigned; I just “believe” they work something out). They flogged me at home 127 to 89 and I found I had ALOT of ball handling errors to tweek. Nay REMOVE. That long court pass idea I had to a streaking Richardson left me in tears (Nash 12 assists – 11 turnovers). I REALLY FELT (apart from my poor ball movement) I was watching the Suns literally REALISE that Amar’e was no longer on their team and…Why The Face..
    * Richardson did finish with 32 though as my sole bright spark.

  • http://www.triplejunearthed.com/dacre Dacre

GAME TWO WAS COMPLETELY REDEEMING. 1st game on a 3 game away run and I’m in Philly – The city of brotherly love (and a storming Evan Turner it turns out!!?). If this 2k outing is anything to go by Turner will get his this season and Doug Collins on the side lines looks very nice. I managed to get the passing scenario corrected (to the tune of Nashs 17 assists and 1 TURNOVER) and squeaked out a not so easy win on the road. Robin Lopez got player of the game 20 pts 8 rbs 3 blks and other than that rather ‘heady’ stat line I feel like I’m watching the PHX suns for reals.

  • http://www.triplejunearthed.com/dacre Dacre

    SO A QUESTION:
    _____________________________________________________
Anyone cranked their ASSOCIATION PLAY yet? Which team have you gone with?

  • http://www.bulls.com Enigmatic

^ I always play as the Bulls. We’re 3-1 right now. Lost to the Blazers (they whooped that a$$, really). Rose is averaging like 25, 10 and 3. I actually have two Association modes I’m playing, in the other one I’m doing the GM thing, simulating seasons. I picked the Raptors for that one, and it took a few seasons but I got them up to a championship contending status. The Heat or the Thunder end up winning it every year though. One thing I don’t like is, in the offseason when you get to the draft if you assign your assistant GM to do the draft for you, you end up with only one or no rookies. I need to fire dude…

  • Danny_W_UK

    @Dacre

Sacto Kings. As I have done since Walt Williams was there. On the 360. Never tried the Online League/Tourney Stuff. Anyone fancies showing me the ropes add me Gamertag is CW484

  • Jake

@Enigmatic.I’ve gone through 3 seasons with the Thunder so far.I signed Allen Iverson, lost in the finals my first year and then beat the Heat in a game 7 after trading Iverson and Jeff Green,2 picks for John Wall. The downside is that the game developers still haven’t changed the fact that every free agent with an 80 rating or more wants an absurd amount of money, and eventually every team is way over the cap so you have guys like Dirk,Kobe and even Carmelo Anthony sitting a year out while cap space is cleared.

  • http://www.bulls.com Enigmatic

@Jake – yeah man, every time anyone over like, 75 becomes a free agent after their rookie contract, you gotta expect to pay at least $12 mil a year for their services, it’s ridiculous. You almost have to draft amazing rookies every year and hope they resign with you as they can go over the salary cap and hard cap.

  • http://www.triplejunearthed.com/dacre Dacre

@Danny_W_UK – WALT WILLIAMS SIGHTING! Excellent stuff.
    ______
@Enigmatic – I agree on the assistant/draft thing. I pretty much scout all my own guys for the draft – I’m already looking for Josh Childress’ replacement. His jumpshot is uglier than the matrix’s…what happened in Europe boy?!
    _____
@Bryan Crawford – your MyPlayer character, what are his specs??? I’ve gone the way of the ‘creative myself as close as possible’ Although I’ve used a Steve Nash mold, so maybe thats not all that accurate a statement to make on my part. I’ve played 2 “draft combine” games and am horribly ‘rookie-like’ with my stat line.

I’ve noticed a few things so far:
The Pacers are GOOD. Dahntey Jones beats up opponents like…too soon? The ball handling issue needs to fixed asap. I’m not a fan of auto-assigning names to bench players in the Jordan Challenge. Other than that, I’m hooked.

Completing the 10 tasks in the Jordan Challenge opens up the Creating a Legend mode in NBA 2K11. However for those who are struggling to get through all 10 or are simply not interested in the challenges an unlock code for the Legend mode has surfaced.

To unlock Creating a Legend mode go to the main menu – features – extras – codes. From there enter: icanbe23. Make sure to save the settings file after doing so.

Creating a Legend mode involves drafting a rookie Michael Jordan to a team of choice and playing through his career in the NBA of today. It is essentially My Player mode only progressing through with Jordan rather than a created player. It also means starting at a 79 rating rather than the 30 something rating you get stuck with in My Player

    BOOK IT!!!

@The Seed – do you know if you can still get the My Player achievements in the Creating a Legend mode?? I’m struggling to beat out John f***ing Wall for Rookie of the Year because the guy is putting up beasting stats – plus there is only so much you can do when you’ve played most of the season with a rating in the 50s.

Anyone play online yet? I’m having trouble getting into ranked games…like it takes YEARS to matchmake. I hope 2K gets on this…I need to ball online!!!!

I’m having big troubles connecting. It seems not to work many times, and when it does it doesn’t matchmake reasonably fast (less than 5 min, just can’t wait more) But the game is great and I love it. Jordan Challenge is great and classic teams too.

I have grown a Gilbert Arenas beard playing this game.

What teams u guys using on association mode?

  • For 3

Why is this game so different from 2k10?? I do not like the way you drive to the whole, it seems choppy, and not near as smooth as 2k10… The way the players go to the whole is much more difficult, and the way they move is not near as good as 2k10…

  • Cory

Does anyone know how to create a team using players from the classic teams? I can’t seem to do it

  • Mason
