Links: NBA 2K11 Review

Finally, it’s in the game…

by Lang Whitaker | @langwhitaker

I’ve spent the last two weeks dealing with health issues. First my own, battling the flu, and then my wife’s. I missed a couple of days of work, couldn’t travel to Atlanta for Bobby Cox’s final regular season game, couldn’t even do the podcast on NBA.com yesterday with Sekou.

All, however, was not lost. I received a copy of NBA 2K11 over a week ago, and every night, once things were quiet and everyone was snug in their bed, I’ve been settling down to attempt to recreate the legacy of Michael Jordan. And it has been nothing short of awesome.

2k11I was planning on writing a column for today’s Links comparing and contrasting NBA Elite 11 and NBA 2K11, which were both supposed to drop today, October 5. Until last week, when, just days before the game was set to hit store shelves, EA Sports announced they were indefinitely delaying Elite.

Instead, all we’ve got dropping today is NBA 2K11, so let’s get right to it: This is the best basketball video game ever released. And one of the deepest sports video games of all time.

2K11 not only has the Jordan Challenge mode, which I previewed here, but you can also play online, you can play franchise mode, you can play the My Player mode, the streetball mode… put it this way: I’ve spent about 15-20 hours on 2K11 and have barely scratched the surface.

I’ve written in the past about basketball video games and how the basic nature of video games keeps them from accurately relaying a true basketball experience. Part of the fun of basketball is the improvisational nature of the game, and it’s always been pretty much impossible to translate that to video games, which rely on structure and formulas. But to me, 2K11 is the closest we’ve come to accurately replicating it. For the first time I can recall in a game, 2K11 pretty much nails defensive switches. For instance, I was playing an ‘86 Bulls/Celtics game with the Bulls, and I missed a shot and the Celts got the ball and threw an outlet to Danny Ainge. I scrambled back to defend and the first guy who got back was Charles Oakley, and he (obviously) cut off Ainge’s drive. Ainge pulled the ball back out, and Oakley just naturally picked him on defense as the Celts set up their halfcourt offense. This is something that would probably happen in an NBA game, but hasn’t always happened in NBA video games.

What pushed things to another level was that Michael Jordan had to pick up Oakley’s man, Robert Parrish, and the Celtics ran a play for Parrish in the post against the smaller defender! Ainge dumped it down to Parrish, I ran down and doubled him as Oakley, and Parrish threw it back out to a wide-open Ainge for a three-pointer.

One facet of the game I’d like to see 2K address next year is the ballhandling. I’m not sure if the NBA Elite demo is still online, but the thing I really enjoyed about the demo was the new dribbling system. By utilizing both joysticks, you really had a terrific amount of control over your player. In 2K11 the ballhandling is responsive, and the more you use the isomotion controls the better you become at it, but it still feels as though there’s some luck involved with getting your guy to do exactly what you want him to do. At the same time, this isn’t NBA Street. It’s not easy to shake loose from guys, and you need to be smart when calling for a pick or an iso. Just like in the NBA.

Still, the first week or so I was playing the game, at least once in each game I went in to do a move with MJ, and I hit the dunk/layup button, and he broke off something that made me blurt out “Oh!” When’s the last time a video game pulled an audible reaction from you when you were playing alone? It’s also pretty awesome getting to play against, say, the 1986 Celtics, and remembering just how bad-ass Larry Bird, Dennis Johnson, Kevin McHale and the others were.

One other visual thing jumped out at me, and it’s really miniscule but it did intrude on my gameplaying experience a few times: For some reason when players have their white socks pulled up to their knees, the socks continually turn black from different angles, almost as if they’re hypercolor or something. I’m guessing 2K will fix this when they release the next patch.

I’m sure I’ll get around to playing My Player mode or The Association mode eventually, but for now it’s still me and MJ. It took me about a week, but I finally completed step one of the Jordan Challenge: Play against the 1986 Celtics, score 63+ points, shoot at least 50 percent from the floor and have at least 6 assists. For some insane reason I decided to try and accomplish this using 8 minute quarters, and I spent much of that time cursing the Celtics for constantly slowing the tempo. It was hard to get the Bulls to score 63 points, much less Michael Jordan alone. But eventually, the other night he finally did it. I mean, I did it. Actually, I guess we did it, Mike and I, together. (Next up, trying to put 70 on the Cavs. Craig Ehlo, get ready.)

As EA and 2K have battled for dominance in the NBA video game market the last few years, pushing each other to improve their games, the real winner has been those of us who play video games. This year, if you’re in the market for an NBA video game, you don’t have a choice. But with NBA 2K11, I don’t think you’re going to be disappointed.

I had Scottie looking to rebound and lead the brake, I’m PROUD TO SAY MY FIRST BASKET WAS A TONI KUKOC CORNER THREE, followed beautifully by SCOTTIE YOKING IT SEVERELY ON SAM PERKINS….what got me next was masterful though, a hesitation cross over and MJ finding a baseline spot… up and around he makes a patented circus lay up! I paused the game for a few minutes and came back with clean pants.

@ dutch readers/commenters: somehow Mediamarkt already has their shelves stacked with copies of 2k11 even though release isn’t for another 2 days! needless to say, I COPPED MINE!

NBA 2K11 is the best thing since vaginas. It’s that simple.

    ^Clearly…

  • Fat Lever

2k11 wins simply for the fact that Sean Price is a playable character in this game. Got d@mn this game is magnificent.

2K11, is better than SOME vaginas.

2k11 is the best game I ever played in my life!!

LMAO…no comment on the above posts

  • RIGGS

@Lang: 2k’s controls have a bit of a steep learning curve, that luck you speak of is only because you arent really familiar with them, but once you get the hang of it (and remember what does which move) it’s as responsive as lives and looks better. Elites controls are good i’ll give it that but the problem is that it’s too “arcadey”, i did the same moves with bynum that i did with rondo and that’s a no no

  • unrel

2k11?.. vaginas?.. can’t we put them together in a perfect world?..

  • http://slamonline.com rudy

May i just say, the opening sequence alone on that game gave me goose bumps. oh yeah, and Tyreke is raw.

  • CONEY ISLANDER

THIS GAME IS EVIL, IT’S GOING TO RUIN MY LIFE!

  • JTaylor21

Anybody that claims to have completed any of those MJ challenges especially the 55 and 63 is lying out their a** (unless you’re playing in the easier modes). It’s damn near impossible to score that many points in only 8 min quarters and win the game without extreme ball-hogging. I stick to association mode for now until I get used to the iso-motion and shot stick. I’m be playing this game non-stop until COD come out.

  • ab40

golden eye and mariokart… epic. almost as epic as nba live 99 where the sprint button also was the push button.

I just preorded it for ps3 its gonna be crazy

  • http://slamonline.com riggs

@Jtaylor21: it isnt hard at all if you ball hog and run iso plays for jordan…i completed it the first time i got it.

  • Orlando Woolridge

So Elite isn’t going to be released THIS YEAR?! Oh no, so it ain’t so! Seriously, can anyone tell me when Elite might be released?

  • The D Train

Admittedly only play on All-Star level, but I’ve got the first 3 challenges done. It’s not easy, but I’ve found pick and roll’s, and iso’s do work pretty well. I had a harder time against Cleveland because Hot Rod Williams and Daugherty kept bodying me up whenever I drove down the lane. The ‘Nique showdown wasn’t too bad because I switched to a zone after he put up 13 on me in the first quarter, and used MJ to box-and-one him, basically. All that being said, I’m not the ultra-stud gamer who rocks HOF’er. I’m not trying to prove my video game prowess to anyone, I’m just trying to unwind/enjoy them.

  • 80y4n

This version really improved gameplay for me.ATM I am playing in Jordan challenge mode, havent tried any other, and I can say that they created deep and interesting game, without making it too arcade like. Jordan is a perfect baller 99 overall in stats except in season 85-86 i think, where he is 93. His speed and ball handling skills are superior to everyones else, but still you cant drive to the hoop anytime you wish. Opposition closes the lanes, and they use handchecks to slow you down, so you need to do the crossovers, hesitation dribbles etc, to create space for yourself, but the trick is to do these moves before you make the contact with the player whos guarding you, otherwise he will slow you down or youll get pressured back. This is one of the most important things they changed as i really didnt like the previous version which allowed for easy drives to the hoop. Not that it is hard to get to the basket now, but it makes you work more, at least while we learning to play

  • 80y4n

Btw I am playing it on PC and in my mind graphics is the same as last year.Same textures, same artistic style, even same bugs with missing heads of some players in replay are still there. Maybe they use a bit more depth of field effect now(They blur out everything that is not in the focus. For example if Jordan is in front of the camera and being in focus, everything behind thats further then him is being blurred out or out of focus.)Animation is excellent and there is a ton of new moves and animations, that look really lifelike. Not to mention improvements to the AI department and gameplay elements that make this game really enjoyable. In a way this is a much better product then I expected, and regardless of the tiny(if any as programmers say they did, but…) upgrade in graphics department, this game is a huge step forward, as it improved the most important thing that games are about, and that is gameplay. Small glitches are really nothing to worry about, and youll barely notice them, as they dont tarnish this wonderful game.

  • The D Train

80y4n makes a great point: it is imperative that you do your dribble moves before the defender bodies you up. You can cross over even Joe Dumars if you line up your shoulders and keep him from getting on you. Once the defender touches you, they have the ability to re-direct you, and that makes it much harder to get a clean shot off.

  • JTaylor21

@Orlando, that’s like asking when will the shoe bomber be released.

  • http://www.slamonline.com Lang Whitaker

Good point guys about doing the dribble moves before the defender hand-checks you or bodies you. I was struggling to get around Ainge with Jordan, but once I ran isos and created a little room, I’d do a move THEN turbo+drive and had a lot more success. Also, to reach the high point totals for Jordan, I’ve found it’s really important to get to the line and hit the free throws. it’s not that hard to draw fouls if you can drive the paint and attack the rim.

  • The D Train

Very true, Lang. I’ve found that driving the lane and getting some easy buckets, or even some contested ones (because MJ can definitely get some of those), and knocking down your freebies gives you a good start. If you get MJ red-hot, you can start knocking down jumpers and turnarounds (well, maybe not 1986-MJ, but every other one nails a pretty nice percentage once he’s hot). I also found that playing MJ off the ball, then letting Pippen dribble-drive can open up some opps for MJ. It’s really a testament to how nice this game is that you have to go to those lengths to score with Jordan. I played a spell with Derrick Rose, and it’s not even remotely the same. 2K managed to make a guy who is rated 99 overall be unstoppable, without being totally unstoppable, if that makes any sense.

I owned every NBA Live from 2000 to 2010, and the only 2K I ever owned was 2K2 (although my roommate a couple years ago owned 2K8 and I played that a lot). I personally thought that NBA Live 09 and 10 were very good, but I wasn’t about to not buy a game that has Jordan on the cover. Now that NBA Live is no longer called “NBA Live”, I don’t even feel guilty about it. Now, my thoughts. I love it, but I suck at it right now. It took me five games to even get a win, and that happened when I stopped playing decent competition and hammered the Raptors with the ’97 Bulls team. I’ve read most of the comments above, and I do agree with the frustrations of the defense intercepting long passes nearly 100% of the time. But, what doesn’t kill us makes us stronger. Buy this game.

  • Morgan

My copy arrived this morning (1 day earlier than release date for UK) and I have never played a better sports game in my life. I’ve warned my gf that she won’t see me all weekend because I want to spend it with Mike…she thinks I’m joking – I’m not. How can they top this next year?

  • http://kb24.com Bigi

Now try to score 81 with Kobe…

  • stever3434

Anyone else having trouble passing? The players move while the ball is in the air, or just dont stop moving when your setting up the offense. The computer steals the ball like every other trip (not that you pass too much in the jordan challenges).

  • 80y4n

@stever3434 The problem in the previous versions was that easy passing system allowed easy breakdown of the defence, thats why now is alot harder to throw the ball to the center if you are on top of the key or behind the 3 point line in the middle and defense is in position. But now you are able to pass the ball to the player in the low post if you standing diagonally in relation to his position, just like in the real basketball, when ball is fed to the post and these passes rarely get picked and have a higher success rate.It is one of the “realistic” things they incorporated into gameplay which made it just a lil bit better and enjoyable. :P

  • http://alan.george@gmail.com Breeze

Well obviously this year thier not allowing the long court lobs ..or the full court bounce passes ..you actually have to play with precision and bring the bal up with the point guard …the dribble moves are not as fluent as last year ..but i like the shot better this year..i think most of the jordan challenges are fairly easy if youre a 2k player except the series one and the dominque one….okc is a monster in this game as well as the nuggets..this is the best 2k yet ..and i cant wait to get on teh my player mode. oh any of you doing teh jordan challenges if you get hott enough and jordans full with energy ..meaning no G next to his name.. i dunk straight from the free throw line in a game on a fast break with mark price trailing …crazy!

  • stever3434

I get that, its def more realistic. But in basketball you can still pass the ball down the court and accross the court ocasionlly. My biggest frustration is when the team is comming down the court and setting up offense. I try and pass the ball to one of the wings comming down the floor and the guy keeps running and it turns into an intercepted pass in the corner instead of a pass at the wing. I read about the problem on IGN as well and he said it best, when did Peja get esp and learn to turn is back to the ball and then run across court to steal the pass without as i press the pass button. Its an awesome game, thats just my biggest problem with it. Still the best BBall game ever though.

  • http://www.slamonline.com Lang Whitaker

I’ve had some trouble with the passing. Full-court passing is pretty much impossible to pull off unless the guy is wide open, which makes it really hard to push the tempo. Hoping 2K will address that in a patch.

  • Frankie!

I didnt read all the comments, but for everybody from Holland, Its dropping Oct 15th..
    Im defntly gettin it

  • JTaylor21

Lang, doesn’t it seem like the jump-shot is much harder than last year’s version because even when a very good shooter is wide open he tends to miss way more than he makes. Like I’m the Heat and Miller is getting open shot after open shot but still hasn’t made one. It seems like you have to hold down the shooting button for a little longer than before. Also the AI’s stealing ability is outrageous because any body even a center will snatch a pass out of mid-air even with his back turned but it also makes it much more challenging because you just can’t be running and gunning like in 2k10 when the score was regularly in the high 100s, it’s in the mid 70s (8min QTs) for 2K11.

  • http://slamonline.com nbk

you can change the “mode” your playing in to be like 2k10. 2k11 is supposed to be as realistic as possible, so on default (under the proper difficulty) your supposed to be on a 100pt per 12 minute pace…relatively

  • http://slamonline.com nbk

12 minute *quarter* pace. 48 minute game

  • Ronald

    Slider downloads are your friend.

  • http://www.slamonline.com Eboy

I played one Jordan Challenge so far…I was tired late last night but wanted to get one finished. I played the 98 Jazz/Bulls Final Game 6. I quickly glanced at the requirements to finish the challenge and went on my way. With the Jazz whipping the sh*t out of me throughout the first quarter (up by 14 at one point) Michael and Scottie started to do their thing. By the end of the 1st half, I was within 5. Michael was toasty through the third and went into the 4th quarter with 38. I finished the Jazz off with tough perimiter D, good ball movement and when Mike would get TRIPLE TEAMED, I’d kick it to Harper or Scottie for open J’s. I wound up winning the game by 7…..Mike scored 50, I had 6 rbs and 4 assists. I thought I I beat that challenge until I realized as I was brought back to the homescreen that I needed 4 STEALS, not assists. I was one pissed off motherfu*ker at 1:00a last night. And yeah, I turned the CPU sliders down on their ability to get steals and while there are still deflections, I’m able to get outlets down-court as long as I can see the defenders and have an open man past half court.

  • http://www.slamonline.com Eboy

BTW, I played game one of the Heat’s season against the Celts on HOF and whipped their as*es by 24. Lebron was monstrous. It’s pretty wild how the announcers were talking about the Heat looking good in their win over the Pistons in their first preseason game. That attention to detail is fuc*ing outstanding.

  • http://www.bluefont.com Hisham

@frankie: not true dude. Mediamarkt already had it since oct 6, and so do I!

  • Tim

Can you play the legends in the regular season mode? I hope so I’m tired of not being able to. Their was just one game that was able to put the legends onto teams in the season mode but first you had to unlock the legends to be able to have them as a playable person. I have the ps2 I don’t have the ps3 yet. Probably at tax time I’ll be able to get a ps3 finally.

  • http://www.bulls.com Enigmatic

The only thing I don’t like personally is I’m having a hard time trying to figure how to play in the post. Like, in the past alls you had to do was hold down L1 or L2 (PS3) and your guy would back his defender down in the post, then you could do a bunch of low-post moves with the right shotstick, depending on how good your guy was in the post. This year’s version you can’t do that, you gotta do something crazy with the left shotstick that I can’t figure out. It’s frustrating as hell, I used to salivate thinking about finally being able to play as a Bulls team with a low post scoring presence, but I haven’t been able to do sh*t with Boozer in the post (art imitating life, I guess, since the real-life Bulls will be without a low-post scorer for a while). Anyone else having these problems?

  • JTaylor21

Enigmatic, same here. I’ve being trying to get CB4 to back down in the post to no avail, so I just settle for long contested jumpers. I don’t know why they had to change the controls and make it already harder than it needs to be. The gameplay is already tough enough, especially the dribble moves and post game. It will probably take a while to get used to but I can’t complain because this game is already the BEST and most realistic of all-time.

  • http://slamonline.com nbk

you automatically post with both triggers. no matter where you are on the court. the rest is the same as the last 4 years.

  • http://slamonline.com nbk

its actually 100% easier then ever to post up, do post moves, and feel under control doing them.

  • http://www.bulls.com Enigmatic

I guess I just gotta play with it a little more. That’s what she said…

  • http://slamonline.com nbk

    lmao ^

  • http://slamonline.com riggs

ditto @ nbk, way easier this year to post up, and Z-Bo is a beast on the post.

  • http://slamonline.com Allenp

I won’t be getting this for a while as I still play Madden. But, I will succumb soon.
And my wife will hate me.

  • http://slamonline.com riggs

Also at anyone having a hard time with passes and their being deflected, its because youre used to the old 2k’s way of passing, this year the person who youre passing to has to receive without any defenders contesting. at all.
