Links: How I Voted

Who walks away with the MVP?

by Lang Whitaker | @langwhitaker

For a few years now, I’ve had a vote in the NBA’s official postseason awards balloting. I’ve always taken this responsibility seriously — I spend time studying stats, talking to players and execs, and I even ran some of these by a few of the SLAM fam to get their opinions. The other thing I’ve always done is posted my votes. If you disagree, that’s fine, because we’re allowed to have opposing opinions. (Even though mine are correct and yours are not.) Either way, I just wanted to be up-front with how I voted. I’ll try to stop by the comments section later on today and answer any questions/comments.

Here are the categories I was asked to vote on for the 2012-12 NBA Season…

ALL-NBA FIRST TEAM
F – LeBron James
F – Kevin Durant
C – Marc Gasol
G – Kobe Bryant
G – Chris Paul

ALL-NBA SECOND TEAM
F – Tim Duncan
F – Carmelo Anthony
C – Dwight Howard
G – James Harden
G – Tony Parker

ALL-NBA THIRD TEAM
F – LaMarcus Aldridge
F – Paul George
C – Joakim Noah
G – Russell Westbrook
G – Stephen Curry

MOST IMPROVED PLAYER
1. Larry Sanders
2. Paul George
3. Greivis Vasquez

COACH OF THE YEAR
1. Erik Spoelstra
2. George Karl
3. Mike Woodson

DEFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE YEAR
1. Marc Gasol
2. Joakim Noah
3. Paul George

ROOKIE OF THE YEAR
1. Damian Lillard
2. Anthony Davis
3. Bradley Beal

MOST VALUABLE PLAYER
1. LeBron James
2. Kevin Durant
3. Carmelo Anthony
4. Chris Paul
5. Kobe Bryant

DWade pretty unlucky to miss ALL NBA.

  • Datkid

    No Dwade? really? smh

  • Truth Talker

James Harden only for this season > Kobe

  • spit hot fiyah

wade getting left of feels wrong. but who do you take of? i want to say something very negative about aldridge being there but i’m struggling to come up with a really strong argument for someone else taking his place.

    Thank you Lang

  • meloman44

it sucks because melo had the 3rd best season in the league… but the best two are the same position as him

  • ChosenOne

Tony Parker should get in the first team.

as always, thanks for showing your votes Lang. Daps to you for doing this every year.

  • Ball So Hard

I think Popovich should be in the coach of the year conversation. Spurs had another above expectation season and he should get some credits. Same for Tony Parker imo. CP3 is a better overall player than Parker, but man Parker was good this year. I’d swap him for CP3 in First Team and MVP selection.

Don’t agree with Aldrigde’s selection. Maybe Blake, but I’ll go with Iguodala. Iggy made the Nuggets en real contender this year.

But I like the lists sir!

  • Hoopdreams

Tony Parker should definitely be 1st team.

Greivis Vasquez should win most improved player and move Westbrook to All NBA second team. Switch with Tony Parker.

  • MUBWAR

i personally have Tony Parker and James harden 1st team Russell Westbrook Kobe 2nd team and CP3 and DWade on 3rd team. but thats just me

    David Lee instead of LaMarcus?

  • http://slamonline.com/ Ben Osborne

Lang can you ask your new employers to give me your vote??

  • http://twitter.com/sooperfadeaway nbk

wait, are you saying Lang has to relinquish his votes to take the new job?

  • http://slamonline.com/ Ben Osborne

He needs to find out. I/he weren’t sure if NBA employees get to vote for NBA awards. Either way, SLAM will NOT have a vote anymore since he wouldn’t be representing us when he voted.

  • http://twitter.com/sooperfadeaway nbk

oh when you put it like that, they should at least create a vote for you to have if Lang keeps his.

  • http://slamonline.com/ Ben Osborne

    That is my hope

  • LangWhitaker

Good comments here. Wade was tough to leave off — so was Bosh. Weird for the Heat to be so good and only have one guy on All-NBA teams, but that’s how it shook out.

  • LangWhitaker

I think if you blog every day for 7 years they automatically give you a vote.

  • http://slamonline.com/ Ben Osborne

    There goes my chance :(

  • LangWhitaker

    Never too late!!

  • ChosenOne

If Curry makes one of the All-NBA teams (which is very likely).., will this be the first time a player has made the All-NBA team but failed to make the All-Star team in the same season?… just curious

  • bike

All good choices. I would have LeBron as #3 for DPOY.

  • http://www.facebook.com/people/Junior-Taylor/100003121138419 Junior Taylor

Westbrook on the 2nd team over Harden
Noah on the 2nd team over Howard (Noah played well all season long until the injuries)
CP at 3 over Melo in the MVP voting.
    Other than that…great list.

  • Lupe

    Rod Strickland comes to mind.

    Even the kids know, pt. 2. #nba #mvp twitter.com/KobesTweets/st…— You’re Welcome (@KobesTweets) April 19, 2013

  • north

LaMarcus Aldridge plays both ends of the court, moves without the ball, doesn’t just dunk and whine to the refs. Aldridge is 6 All-NBA teams ahead of Blake until he spends time in the gym to use his amazing potential.

  • north

The Howard one is the most confusing… 2nd best center in the league this year? No-ah way Dwight gets that nod. (See what I did there?)

  • spit hot fiyah

    biggest all-star snubb ever imo

  • Max

Does Iggy count as a guard or a forward?

  • http://twitter.com/trueballer4lif1 Melvin flynt

Marc gasol does not belong on. Any list!

  • underdog

What about the 6th man award?

  • http://www.rich-imaging.com/ Dutch Rich

Lang, seriously? Not even a Net on the third team?

  • http://twitter.com/Hoopistani Karan Madhok

Sad that Carmelo misses your All NBA first team after a near-MVP season. Shouldn’t the voting be 2 backcourt players + 3 frontcourt players like the All Star ballot? There’s no Center who deserves to be in the All NBA first team this season (Sorry Marc Gasol, who has got my vote for DPOY too).

  • HiDef

Aldridge and chandler have in recent years I believe. Bogut too.
