Purdue’s Hummel Tears ACL Again

by Ryne Nelson

Purdue’s Robbie Hummel re-tore his ACL on the team’s first practice this morning and, according to the university, is done for the season.

Hummel suffered a season-ending ACL injury on February 24 this year and had just been cleared by doctors a week ago.

Only one word needs to be said to describe the situation: Terrible.

Purdue senior Robbie Hummel re-tore his ACL in practice Saturday morning and will miss the entire 2010-11 season, the university said.

Hummel missed the Boilermakers’ final eight games last season after tearing the ACL in his right knee the first time in a Feb. 24 game against Minnesota.

Before the injury, Hummel started all 27 games for Purdue, averaging 15.6 points, 6.9 rebounds and 2.1 assists per game. The forward earned All-Big Ten and honorable mention All-America honors.”

Purdue’s title hopes have essentially dwindled to nothing without its senior leader. With Hummel out, Duke’s out in front by a good margin to start the year.

Hummel, who also missed significant time his sophomore season with a back injury, could get a medical redshirt, but would he want to return without fellow Wooden Award candidates E’Twaun Moore and JaJuan Johnson?

that is honestly really, really terrible. i feel for the dude

    Dam. Very unfortunate

@Tarzan: they were a top 3 team in the nation with him before the first tear. With Moore and Johnson also returning (after testing draft waters), those 3 seniors would’ve won the Big 10 and been a 1, 2 seed. They definitely had title hopes. What a shame for Hummel.

sometimes life tells you there’s more out there than basketball. I never would’ve realized what god wanted me to do if I never tore my acl. Mr. Hummel there is a lesson in this. I feel for his squad though. prayers for this kid.

  • twinparadox

  • horsey

    In Barkley’s words: “Turrible.”

  • JalepinoSausage

I got the left one fixed 2 years ago , & now getting my right one fixed in 3 weeks. It’s all about physio & not going too hard too early . One !!!

  • Clay

Ahhh, the consequences of being both white and unathletic hit Hummel yet again. At least he’ll have more time to focus on his studies and end up with a degree.

  • JD

Tarzan they were closer than anyone to duke before this feel so sorry for both Purdue and Hummel who has to go into the draft with this

  • hammer

Being white and unathletic don’t mean a thing. Last I checked ghill, tmac and griffey jr weren’t white or unathletic. Just unfortunate as hummel is

  • ab40

Wow that’s terrible. I wish him the best because rehab is hard.

  • Clay

Hammer I understand that it doesn’t have to only be white & nonathletic guys. But when it happens twice, it leaves one to wonder…

  • http://www.twitter.com/gerardhimself Gerard Himself

wow, tore the same acl twice…. that besides the fact that this will take ages to heal again, it’s also a huge mental blow for the kid. Really bad news.

I guess that’s where u and I differ clay. If u get injured or r injury prone, race and athletic ability have nuthin 2 do w/it. @ times its just unfortunate circumstances or bad luck, other times it has a lot 2 do with what kind of doctors u have. N hummels case,n my opinion, its the latter

  • Jose

Can’t imagine how horrible that must be. u finally recover after such a long absence only to go dwn again.greg oden comes to mind but it’s a worse situation for hummel since its his last year

  • Etheknickfan

Get a degree, get a job, he’ll be fine. Bball gave him a chance to succeed just not in the NBA. A degree from Purdue can still be worth millions in the future

  • Jake

    Been there,done that.Game over!

  • tRay

Damn good luck kid stay strong

  • Hussman25

This is Curtis Sumpter all over again. Perdue is in almost the same situation Nova was when he tore his 2x… This may not end his career totally, but now the European route is a definate. Curtis is doing well over there, Y cant Robbie??!?!? Good luck w/ Rehab young fella!

  • Seven Duece

Dang, poor kid. I feel for him; he’s had a horrible 2 year stretch now.
