Kentucky’s Kanter Can’t Play

After a fall’s worth of drama, the NCAA has ruled Enes Kanter, a top freshman, ineligible. ESPN has more: “Kentucky freshman center Enes Kanter has been ruled ineligible for receiving illegal benefits while playing for a club basketball team in Turkey, the NCAA said in a statement on its website. Kentucky will appeal the decision to the Division I Student-Athlete reinstatement committee at the end of the month. Kanter played three seasons with the Turkish sport club Fenerbahce from 2006-07 to 2008-09. He competed primarily for the club’s under-18 junior team, but did play on the club’s senior team in 2008-09. According to facts agreed to by the university and the NCAA Eligibility Center, Kanter received $33,033 more than his expenses for the 2008-09 season.”

You know what’d be kind of dope? If he ended up teaming up with Allen Iverson this season across the Atlantic.

The NCAA would eat Stern alive in a glaringly well lit alley.

…..welp..big blow for this years UK squad….they’ll re-up next year in any case…..hopefully Josh Selby doesn’t get the same treatment

  • T-Money

i really dont understand the basis of kentucky’s argument. he played games for the A team of an Euroleague club… cmon now.

  • Groves

I think they should improve the D-League by establishing teams in bigger non-NBA markets, that way players like Kanter can play in the US…and the NBA should set up an NBA Euro League, NBA Asia League and establish a relationship with the Australian NBL. all these leagues would feed the NBA in the same way the current D-League does.

D league doesnt pay nearly as well as a Euroleague club.

come on now, the dude turned down millions to play highschool ball and college, give the dude a break. his family is rich, he didnt need those incentives, call BS.

    lol @blue

groves you are stupid. that would mean the nba would govern the basketball word. It says national you know?

  • JoeMaMa

Player: Despite the NBA barring me from following my dream of going pro in my own country, it’s great to be here. I hear the school is going to make millions in TV deals, merchandise, and ticket sales on my, and my teammates’, names. Am I going to see any of that? School and NCAA: sorry, no. It’ll go to our maintenance of the system that allows amateur athletes to follow their dreams. Player: And is that your Benz? School president/vice president/school execs/NCAA chairman/NCAA execs/TV presenters/advertising agencies/sports store owners/coaches: umm. maybe.

Kentucky fans and there players are bums. Go join A.I. bum

@ The Clack Rick Kalma – is Kanter eligible for the UK squad? His wikipedia page says he’s Turkish?

  • Bobby

Oops – sorry about the name typo there!

  • Agent 87

D league doesnt play nearly as well as a Euroleague club

That sucks. But I still think he’l big a top 5 pick in the upcoming draft.

  • tRay

This doesn’t surprise me one bit lol Calipari is off to his same old tricks again. How does he continue to coach?!

  • http://www.slamonline.com Cub Buenning

Yea, the league needs some more tall Turkish dudes. It seems like every team has a few already….
Selby’s case is entirely different than Kanter’s, but yes, let’s hope he gets to play for Kansas this year.

  • Hussman25

If Kanter is done, so too may Josh Selby; Huge blows to both programs w/ Final 4 Dreams. He’s going home. Y make pennies in the D-League when he can go home and make a few more Mill to pad his account.

Coach Cal never fails to amaze me. He bends and breaks as many rules as possible. He is a great recruiter, but how can he justify trying to say Kanter still has amateur status?

  • Cizzo

Fire Coach Cal for even trying to pull off that ish…

  • JD

Just cos he goes back to turkey it doesnt mean he’ll go play on the same team as Allen Iverson. Its not like thats the only team in Turkey.

  • Blue

Coach Cal will appeal and Kanter will be eligible after Christmas.

enes is the beast. just look at his stats at 2008 european under 18 contest. he plays 40pts 20reb when he plays with his peers

  • http://www.need4sheed.com Tarzan Cooper

Cal has gotten all of his former programs in trouble. 08 season didnt even happen. Rose went to tahiti for a year. I wonder if that would have happened had they won the title. ……. Selby should be cleared soon. Its not against the rules to know a guy. Ncaa has to prove he accepted money or whatever. If they had proof, id think they would have acted on it already.
