Breaking: John Wall Signs With Reebok

by Ben Osborne / @bosborne17

Given our connections with all the big sneaker companies, we have been getting breathless updates on the battle to sign John Wall to an endorsement deal ever since he declared for the Draft.

The favorite has long been seen as Reebok, which had the financial backing from parent company adidas to go after Wall, the heritage of making iconic shoes for one player without much of a larger roster of players (Allen Iverson and his long line of signature Reebok kicks) and a refocus on hoops with the brand’s upcoming Zig basketball shoe.

Add it all together and, as Adrian Wojnaroski reported this evening, Reebok got its man.

Writes Woj:

“Kentucky guard John Wall, the projected No. 1 pick in June’s NBA draft, has reached an endorsement agreement with Reebok worth $25 million over five years, sources tell Yahoo! Sports.

Reebok made an immense investment with the charismatic and explosive guard, believing that Wall can replace Allen Iverson as the brand’s superstar. Wall’s reps, Dan Fegan of BEST Entertainment and Brian Clifton of Pindar Enterprises, negotiated a rare two guaranteed signature shoes for Wall.”

Those financial numbers are much in line with what we’d heard. We also heard rumors that Iverson himself was part of Reebok’s pitch to sign Wall.

We’d heard of everyone from Nike to Peak to Under Armour discussing what it would take to sign Wall, but again, all indications (including a Tweet from John—@jimmywa11—himself) are that the soon-to-be-Washington Wizard has committed to Reebok.

Wow, Back to the Future 2 reference. It’s crazy to think we should have hoverboards by 5 years, and that a lot of shows forecasted into 2020 thinking it was forever away.

Brian Clifton? The same guy we heard about all along, oh gee, John Wall let him represent him. Please don’t let this be a recruiting violation all over again-wait, yes, I don’t like Calipari.

    SICK!!

  • J Roc

Joining a great brand with great history of point guards with RBK brand Allen Iverson, Steve Francis, Baron Davis and now John Wall. Finally someone doesn’t go with Nike.

  • http://slamonline.com JL

are there any early reviews on the zig tech shoes?

  • http://www.realcavsfans.com Anton

    LOL Iverson made a pitch?
Rbk execs: “Alright fellas, we gotta throw some money at this stud.”
I3: “Yo Reebok, I say y’all sign my man John.”
Rbk execs: “Hey uuuhhh, who are you again?”
I3: “Answer here. And my final answer? John Wall.”
Rbk execs: “Uh-huh, listen just cause you’re still on payroll doesn’t qualify you for board meetings. Besides, we’ve made our decision last week.”
I3: “For real? Oh, well I couldn’t make it last week…or the week before…”
    Rbk execs: “Security!”
I3: “I did it my way…I DID IT MY WAAAAAAAAYYY!”

    Yuck. Reeboks are fugly.

  • dada

Put me down for a pair of each signature shoe.

  • slamfan4life

    Adidas owns Reebok

    Reebok has NO stars left

    Thus

    J-Wall signs with the RBK

  • Jer Boi

would be even crazier if the wiz didnnt draft him and he went to phili.

  • http://sidewalkopinion.blogspot.com Vegetto

Finally an endorser signed to a non-Nike brand.

  • topo

reeboks are weak, iversons first couple were the only cool ones

  • http://www.slamonline.com Pardeep

this also pretty much means Allen Iverson’s NBA career is over, and yes he does have too much ego to be the 2nd big star on his own brand, check his resume:P he has like 14 shoes man!.

  • http://www.stuffwhitepeoplelike.com Tarzan Cooper

Didnt see that coming. That pic reminds me of how british those baby kentcuky jerseys are

  • L Daley

So pysched that Wall is going with Reebok guys! It’s an amazing shoe; the Zig and nothing can stop this Amazing team now!!!

  • underdog

Actually, I think the last two Answers were pretty nice (12 & 13) and the 7 was not bad either, but only the Question is a true classic. Anyway, I’am not so sure RBK going to use the zigitech for Wall’s signature shoe.

  • WolfNast

    Shoulda gone with Under Armour

  • http://www.nba.com/suns Dacre

    Should have signed with Dunlop.

  • MB

Should have signed with new balance.

  • http://slamonline.com Rodger Bohn

I’m not the biggest fan of any RBK myself. I mean, I love the first pair of Questions to this day bc they were so simple. I still remember being in the 6th grade and waiting in line at the mall to cop those. Yes, FIRST DAY SELLOUTS on some Reeboks, lol! While I don’t think Wall has AI potential in terms of marketing, he’s mos def the closest thing they’ve had since him…

  • KH

Reeboks are for kids who ride the short bus.

  • http://www.facebook.com/sesa.opas Sesa

I like Reebok’s Casual Shoes but not it’s B-Ball shoes

  • NYC-MECCA

what’s the point in signing with reebok if they’re owned by adidas? why not just sign with adidas? adidas makes a better quality shoe too.

  • TyMo

    Should have signed with Keds

  • http://www.shawnkemp.com JACO

    Reeboks??? wow

  • http://nba.com/cavaliers Stephon

Bad endorsement deal to me he shoulda signed wit nike. But maybe he can resurrect the Questions that AI used to wear.

  • Saku 39

$25 million sounds like a steal for Reebok. Durant got a bigger deal from Nike, but I think Wall is more marketable.

  • Hussman25

Good choice for Wall; Reebok will put their all into his campaign. He will be what AI used to be for the brand. That “DAMN” John Wall Dance all the lil kids will be doing very, very soon (it wont be just a Kentucky thing). The Zig Tech’s remind me of his game… Wild, but controlled (at times). They should use AI as a “torch passer” in his first commercial… Have Jada do a rap or freestyle and introduce Wall to the World.

  • http://www.springbored.net letsmotor

i don’t like it. i know it’s nothing new, but i hate the idea of someone getting an endorsement deal before they’ve played a single NBA game. let him earn it first.

  • http://www.slamonline.com/ niQ

Not bad. But I feel like he’ll be with Nike after a few years.

  • kenNY

his shoes should be called the ‘ATW’s for ‘Against The Wall’

  • M-blog

How is he replacing Allen Iverson with that cheesy ass deal ? He needs to fire his agent asap .That is pennies for Reebok. And Iverson isn’t retired .Why does the media keep saying that ? His Manager did a interview with ESPN & he said AI isn’t retired ..Stop pushing the man out for crisis sake .

  • Sonicproof

He’ll be with Nike just like Rondo.

  • http://www.slamonline.com Pardeep

This would be an amazing commercial: John Wall is shown struggling in a game or missing some jumpers and then AI walks in gives him the new Wall RBK shoe that looks like a 2010 edition of the questions(this would be the torch passing) and John Wall does what AI did in the Rocky Balboa commercial where he ran through Philly except he does it through Washington (passing by the white house would be nice) stops and at the end swishes a three pointer looks at his sneakers and walks away.

  • DC

Reebok.. terrible, at least sign with Adidas. But i’m still curious to see what these “Zig” basketball shoes are gonna look like.

  • http://nbacheapseats.blogspot.com Chendaddy

@niQ: Yup. Remember when Kobe wore adidas and D-Wade wore Converse? What do they wear now?

  • http://www.slamonline.com doyouwantmore

    Weird. Reeboks are for Moms.

  • Jrooks

John wall isnt going to be that good watch brandon jennings cross him up in the nba.

  • Jrooks

John wall isnt going to be that good watch brandon jennings cross him up in the nba..

  • Hussman25

@Pardeep: Nice concept… @M-blog: I agree… He’s not officially gone and until he files his paperwork with the L he’s a free agent. I think Doug Collins will make a trip down the A for a sitdown. Collins (as Danny Ocean): Are you in or out… Rite now??

  • DreXnaW21

John Wall should’ve signed with Nike or Adidas dude

  • L Daley

John Wall looks so great in the new Reebok ad that just came out with him in the new Zig. This is a fresh campaign and it’s gonna sky rocket both of them!!!

  • DC

If John Wall ends up being a great player in the NBA he’ll end up with Nike because they’ll offer him way more money. Nike could probably endorse any athlete they want.

  • Dave

John Wall is an excellent player and it destined for stardom. If Reebok knows this, which it does, obviously, it’s ZIG campaign is going to be fresh. The Zigs are Reeboks comeback to the courts and it’s on!!!

  • Dresden

the Reebok’s Zig is specifically designed for the courts and it’s going to be the new star of BBall in no time with Wall as it’s star;)

  • Brad

Wall and the Zig are flippin hot on the courts come time!!!

  • aidee333

    no body can replace iverson…………
