Kicksology: Kevin Garnett

Celebrating The Big Ticket’s 36th birthday with a gallery of his sneaker history.

by Abe Schwadron | @abe_squad

Kevin Garnett‘s sneaker game is not unlike Kevin Garnett: mean. His history of kicks might not be the flashiest or the most revered among true sneakerheads, but KG is nothing if not adventurous. Garnett entered the League in 1995 and wore Nikes until 2001, when he signed with then-up-and-coming sneaker brand And 1. Then in ’04 he joined adidas, where he ran game with fellow KICKS 6 cover boys Tim Duncan and Tracy McGrady before going international in 2010 with China’s ANTA. Can’t knock the hustle.

With a signature shoe from each of four different brands, to ask “You ever wear the Garnetts?” barely makes sense anymore. But favorites, sure (hint: Air Garnett III). The best part about putting together a timeline of The Big Ticket’s best sneakers is realizing how long dude’s been doing it. No one will dare to call him old again, but when your original shoes are hitting the retro market while you’re still playing…

So as KG prepares to put the finishing touches on his professional playing days—a career resume that already includes 14 All-Star Games, NBA MVP and Defensive Player of the Year awards and, of course, the ’08 title—we salute him with a look back at the highlights from his footwear choices, and wish him a happy 36th birthday. Enjoy!

  • Reggie06

Dont want to be disrespectful but what “Big Rod” means?

  • Zabbah

For an article about a player’s shoes I can barely make out the design of it. Hey Slam, this is almost pointless. Let’s see closeups of it, yeah?

Those And 1 KG 2′s were fire as a kid. I remember the days when And 1 and Dada were the hottest things on the market. Here in Sac, when Webber wore Dada, his shoes were a MUST HAVE.

From 16 to 30 just about all are close ups Z

  • HAMMER

Bring back the Way Up’s, Nike. One of the most underrated shoes of all time.
Those were hot back in the day. Everybody rocked them. Well, almost everybody. Haha!

  • TheWhiteMarkPrice

Cosign Hammer, those Way ups were the shit back in the day. I wore those playing in college.

I have the Jordan XI, the nike air garnett hate the tongue of the shoe

You gotta make a Pierce Kicksology

  • allen3

I always believe the garnett 3 where intended for penny specially because of the foam on the side.
is there any connection between KG and Penny
remember the 1st pics of him I saw when he was in High school he was wearing air flight 1
and he was mentionned in a 1997 lil penny commercial

caboose, those dadas were something else.

The Dada’s were dope. It was like they were made to wear in the street, but CWebb just happened to hoop in them. Remember the Sprewell ones with the spinning rim on the side? lmao. KG’s Anta kicks are pretty nice when you see them up close.

@Allen3, that is not foam on the side of the KG3′s its just leather. But I feel you it does look like a Penny spinoff.

Wow, I actually remember KG wearing the Nike Air Wayups!

  • http://redoftoothandclaw.ca/ niQ

Oh, and the Flightposite KG’s were dope!

  • jbone23

Wow he’s been with 4 different companies?!? Didn’t realize that. And1 shoes are always so sad, except for the Tai-Chi’s and Vince in the dunk contest. Sadly, with all these powerhouse companies, the ANTAs (which I have NEVER heard of) are way nicer than all the rest of his signature shoes.

  • Do Work

anyone else notice as he got further on in his career he started flipping the logo on his socks down? kind of seems like the same thing when rondo would wear his headband upside down
