LeBron James Defends the Cost of His Sneakers

The high cost of the recently-launched LeBron X has become a source of controversy. According to the Miami Heat superstar, there’s a reason his kicks cost so much. Per the Sun-Sentinel: “Amid the launch for the LeBron X, the model that comes with high-end sneaker-compatible software for $270 and without the added technology for $180, James stressed that it is a matter of offering a variety of options. ‘We have wide ranges of shoes that range from $300 all the way down to $160, $180,’ he said, with the Nike website currently offering a signature James model at $120. He said there is a place for a high-end model, as well as other price points. ‘We have great technology and they do a great job of putting out great shoes and things of that nature,’ he said. ‘But it just bothers you when things aren’t always correct. But other than that, we move on and we get the real facts out there and we live with them.’ Asked if he was involved in the price of his footwear, he said, ‘We just try to do a good job of continuing to innovate the shoe game. Like I said, it’s great technology out there. We go around asking kids and asking people who love shoes what they like to see in shoes and we go from there.’”

He didn’t answer the question. Go ahead and say you’re not that deeply involved in determining the price of your shoes LeBron.

  • Bravo

This dude is only selling for that price cuz he thinks that his ball shoes will be like retro Jordan’s in about 10 years……not gonna happen……DOEEE

  • Anthony Dixon

Lebron is taking the Jordan route..

  • shockexchange

One day Bron is gonna look back at the price of his shoes and put the incident in the same category as the Nike commercial he shot wearing a choir robe – EPIC FAIL

  • ByAnyMeansNecessary

Phil Knight doesn’t need help in deciding how much he prices his shoes. He’s been doing this for a while. He’s in it to sell shoes and make money, not to care about the lives of the kids who can’t afford his shoes or the lives of people who will literally kill for the shoes. Unfortunately, LeBron either has to go with what the company decides. All of these players who have shoes either have to go that route or go the Stephon Marbury route and have their own affordable shoes.

  • spit hot fiyah

phil knight also doesn’t care about sweat shop workers/borderline slavery

  • http://twitter.com/gladdyyss_ Gladstone Edwards

LeBron is the same guy that once talked about he couldn’t afford shoes as a kid, yet he wants to do the same to younger people. Nice LeBron!

  • The Mauve Avenger

    Wow just wow.

  • pposse

SMH, this is a bit disappointing. Even the retro jordan’s only go for $150 in stores. $180 is crazy expensive, and $270 is just stupid. I don’t see anyone, but serious athletes getting shoes for $270.

  • uqk

lebron got cheaper shoes: soldier & ambassador line

  • danpowers

its bad enough that they punk ppl by selling a product that still would generate gain if being sold by smth between 25 – 50 $ but then come up with bullshit like trying to justify the price? come on, ppl cant be that stupid

  • ThaWindy

I walked into footlocker, champs, and foot action and 90 percent of the shoe are Nikes. That’s when I knew I had to stop buying them. So the price doesn’t bother me at all. It’s the “ur a horrible parent if you don’t buy our shoes” advertising that gets me. But this is America and were in charge of consuming.

  • Dutch Rich

Pretty sad. His shoe won’t sell very well I expect. We’re just clawing our way out of a recension for crying out loud. And Nike has plenty of great shoes on the market at a better price-point.
The lazy marketing effort doesn’t warrant the inflated price of the shoe.

  • Ra’s Al Ghul

I’m Not sure where you people are buying your Jordan’s? bc every time i step into footlocker, foot action, champs or wherever if i could Ever find a pair i like they don’t go for 150, its at least 170 plus tax so im still spending $200 pretty much, i was definitely Outraged when i first heard the price of the Lebron X’s then they clarified that it was the Nike plus, i don’t need Nike plus, so the $170 is still expensive but not as bad, even Derrick rose D3 sneaker Debut’s at $160, so its not only Nike or Lebron all sneaker lines who have star players are marketing them at $150 plus. Although Durant’s kicks are $100? sneaker stores barely keep them in stock or even look to restock them and he has great colorways. Its either you buy it or you don’t IMO. Everything in the USA is Hyper inflated, Milk used to be $3 now its almost 6, so you gotta expect clothing and sneakers to go up.

  • Anthony Dixon

those are not the exclusives.. The sneakers you see ppl lined up for are usually that price or maybe more.. Plus ppl resale them for much higher prices and that is when bad things happen.

  • roscoe

  • Junior Taylor

It’s simple. If you can’t not afford the shoes or choose not, that’s fine but don’t sit here complaining about the prices. I don’t complain about the price of Gucci and Louie sneaks because I will never spend 600+ dollars on a pair of shoes. We live in a world full of complainers and whiners.

  • ByAnyMeansNecessary

People want LeBron’s shoes. They’ll sell regardless of how much they cost and that’s what Nike knows.

  • http://twitter.com/_DFrance DFrance

I said the same thing on the last post about the price of LBJs shoes. You have options, buy something else.

  • Pops

    Lebron’s father

  • http://twitter.com/_DFrance DFrance

Why is LeBron the only one that seems to be getting flack for this? Other than Durant, no superstar player has a signature shoe under $140. Like someone else said, he has the “Soldier”, line which is $100. If that is too much for you then buy some shoes without a players name on them. This is a “Big Sneaker Company”, thing, not a LeBron thing

  • Yes.We.Did.

    I Miss Starbury….

  • http://twitter.com/Jzakoni Verified Account

    f*ck expensive shoes bron

  • Joe

Kevin durant has a clause in his nike contract to keep the shoes below $100. So the athletes do have some say

  • Ash

It so easy to not buy the shoes smh lol people make a big deal out of nothing

  • Youngindy21

The Air Jordan 1s and 2s are $105 and $135 respectively.

  • charliewinning

No one in corporate America does. Profits are the only thing that matter. Unfortunately, even knowing this information, you and I are equally guilty for continuing to buy their products.

  • VanCityBBall

Sure people dont need the shoes if they dont want them… but thats the same for the new iphone for example right? you dont need it, you want it. so to those die hard LBJ fans with the miami snapbacks to Bron socks i doubt they would be able to get a pair of shoes at this price, so in that sense you can complain about the how much it costs. especially during these economic times

  • aicomeback

those are no longer basketball shoes ……….

  • aicomeback

    its all about that hype

  • aicomeback

new bred 4s and 11s are gonna be 180…..

  • pposse

WTF, daaamn! both of those shoes are not worth 180! i love jordans just like the rest of them, but the black and red 11′s and 4′s are not all that..id rather get the all white 11′s

  • Dutch Rich

A 2 yr dip in popularity has forced him to stray from his financial goals. Guess his peoples feel he has some catching up to do. That ad doesn’t even look like anything Nike would make. I smell a marketing hijack by his cohorts.

  • danpowers

yup. he showed how its done when it comes to sneakers. he thought about the kids when it came to that instead of thinking just about his bank account

  • danpowers

i could easily afford them, just wont by them because i dont want to support this shit. dropping a comment is not rlly wining to me but making a statement.

  • danpowers

i think its not rlly about the price of the shoes. i think ppl show their disgust because he is trying to punk them.

  • http://www.facebook.com/Brill86 Andrew Woods

tell mercedes to cheapen the cost of their S Class so that everybody can afford them. and ditto for all apple products too. LeBron can do no right in some ppls eyes.

  • spit hot fiyah

u r correct sir, and by wearing their stuff we r also giving them free advertising

  • http://twitter.com/_DFrance DFrance

The clause must have expired because the KD Vs are $115

  • http://twitter.com/_DFrance DFrance

Nike gave him a little over a bazillion dollars, he said what an endorser is supposed to say!

  • shutup

    thank you.

  • hagekg

hahahahaha…..yeah i agree , jordan 1 really looks great…..but people who owns them surely know what the cushioning feels like when they jump hard to the hoop :)

  • http://www.facebook.com/qcollingwood Interdico Scriptor

LBJ the distance between you and the common man just grows every day doesn’t it?

  • pposse

wouldnt you like to think that NBA players have social responsibilities?? They are supposed to be role models for kids, and a major target fan base of theirs is mainly inner city youth. Promoting $270 to inner city youth is socially irresponsible in my book.

  • danpowers

its just a direct reaction to his statement. if he wouldnt have said something nobody wouldve reacted to him.

  • http://profile.yahoo.com/COBD2JAROFKG5ECLO5B4OTAAKE Jack

    Kobe Bryants shoes…

  • danpowers

no it aint. the majority of players are bastards because of that. if you wanna know how its done go back to the 90s. a real man would do exactly this here: http://www.sportsbusinessdaily.com/Daily/Issues/1996/11/5/Sponsorships-Advertising-Marketing/CHRIS-WEBBER-CALLS-TIME-OUT-ON-NIKE-SHOE-DEAL.aspx

  • danpowers
  • danpowers

a good person would just get out of this contract and move to a brand that sells affordable shoes that could also be bought by the poor or that would not at least cause “crime related to obtaining drugs” lol. e.g. webber and marbury pulled that move and decided to stand for shoes that even the poor or average kid could afford. kudos for that

  • danpowers

or the webber route and change to an already existing afordable shoe line

  • danpowers

i came back to appreciating lebron for his play but this is just a bitch move

  • danpowers

thats a cheap excuse. guys like c-webb and marbury did the right thing. that has nothing to do with the “regular james hate” and its not only james who is a little bitch when it comes to business issues

  • http://twitter.com/_DFrance DFrance

CWebb is a rare kind of stand up guy. I remember him rocking the Dadas back in the day. Let me ask you this, Melos shoes are $150 and the new shoe Amare is pushing cost a whopping $225(no Nike+ either). Do you care that they are not taking a stand? Or is it cool Cruz they’re Knickerbockers?

  • danpowers

no. these are just some of many things that really piss me off about them. i am absolutely not cool with that. it is how it is: you cant chose your team, your team choses you.

  • Jerome

As long as dummies keep buying the prices will not drop. I like how LeBron acknowledges that Nike talks to “kids and … people who love shoes”. Such a generic staement. He should have said, “I am just the guy Nike uses to get you to buy stuff.”
