  Kobe is my favorite player and all, but I always kind of liked Smush, and I still do… Is that bad? While not the greatest pure point in history, Smush isn’t as bad as some would like to remember. That being said, I think Kobe is showing this season that he isn’t the terrible teammate that his detractors would suggest he is.

  Look Smush sucked, but anybody remember when Smush first started playing with the Lakers and was averaging like 17 in his first dozen games? Everybody was trying to figure out who he was and stuff.
  Then, slowly, it seemed like he lost confidence and began to get really wack. Most of his problem was playing scared, at least that’s what I saw. He was really tentative, then he just stopped trying and starting pouting.
  Now, some of that was just his wackness, but I also think Kobe, like Jordan, is a hard cat to play with.

  @AllenP, thank you! Somebody who gets it. Smush could score, and would have bursts where he was really effective. If being an inconsistent player warranted a death sentence then Odom wouldn’t be in a Lakers uniform anymore. Also, I do think that while Kobe is a better teammate then people give him credit for, if he doesn’t think you are pulling your weight he will obliterate you emotionally. Devin George can attest to that.

  @Nick the Great- he had spurts of being effective, but at the end of the day his jumpshot was HORRIBLE, and after those first dozen games he became a PG who couldnt get more than a few assists per game that shot too many jumpers (way too many considering he has no jumpshot whatsoever).

  In all fairness, Smush used to really drive the lane when he came to LA. Dunking of folks and all off of one foot and all. And then, it all went away. However, he’s not in a position to criticize anybody right now. Talking sh!t 3 years after the fact when you got run out of the L because you were too much of a headcase is not a good look.

  oh…and by the way, after being cut from the heat, went to the clippers, got cut by the clippers, and in the next NBADL draft…Parker was the 14th pick in the recent Developmental League draft by the Rio Grande Vipers. He was picked 14th out of 16 teams, meaning that 13 teams took a chance relative unknowns rather than pick Parker, who once shared the backcourt with Kobe Bryant and averaged 11.1 points, 2.8 assists and 2.5 rebounds. When you fall, it can be a hard landing. Now he’s playing in China, or not since he seems to be back in America.

  I hear you Justin. However, I didn’t hear any vitriol in Parker’s voice, just that he didn’t enjoy playing with Kobe. It didn’t sound like sh*t talking to me, he may have just used a poor choice of words. Thing is, i’m sure he isn’t the only player who probably felt that way about Kobe. As Allenp mentioned, people didn’t enjoy playing with Mike either. I can imagine it is hard playing with alpha dog type mentality’s who expect you to play at a certain level 24/7.

  I’m glad some of y’all remember Smush going HARD to the rack. But, y’all are right, suddenly he just turned into a jump shooter. Then again, that also happened to Ron Harper when he played for Phil Jackson. Harper was just better suited to it.
  I wonder if Phil dislikes creative, scoring point guards because of his time in New York with Earl and Clyde. That’s a reach, but we can all see that Don Nelson hates big men because of his time in Boston.

  Allenp, I just think Phil needs a PG who can make jumpers. Smush can’t shoot. Yeah, he can drive, but the NBA could sign ANY Dleague guy to drive in. But Smush just couldnt hit the jumper. I think Phil doesn’t have a problem with creative guards- I’m not sure Smush was creative. He just drove in and put it up. That’s not all that creative to me… And you’re right, MJ wasn’t the most loving teammate either. But saying overrated experience when you cant get respect in the DLeague is sad. and I don’t think he was blackballed, I just think he can’t play efficiently in the NBA. Blackballed is Craig Hodges. If you can efficiently play, attitude doesn’t matter…Remember JR Rider getting that many chances? Craig Hodges got screwed because he held an at the time radical viewpoint (even though it’s probably the right viewpoint). Smush isn’t in the league because the league has enough guards that don’t get burn even though they are efficient, the NBA doesn’t have roster room for an extremely inefficient PG.

  I wasn’t trying to shift all the blame on to the league.
  Smush got signed by several teams because they thought he had some sort of talent that they needed. When that talent failed to materialize, Smush got cut.
  However, I think that Smush got a reputation as a malcontent after playing for the Lakers, and Phil helped create that identity.
  I guess, when I look at Phil Jackson and Kobe Bryant, I can understand why somebody would say playing for them is overrated. I wouldn’t want to play for Phil or play with Kobe. I respect their games, but I wouldn’t want to run with them. They are both sheisty.

  I remember Smush on the Lakers, and for him to have been getting press @ the time must mean he was doing something right. People keep mentioning his low assist avg. Wasn’t this around the time when Kobe wouldn’t pass the ball. He just started 2 seasons ago. Also, he was starting over Jordan Farmar, so he must have been playing better @ the time. Ppl keep saying his jumpshot is bad, well Rondo isn’t the greatest shooter either, but he has a great big man to pass it 2 and great guys on the wing.   Ya know, Smush was OK. He averaged double figure points for us, was a pretty good steals guy. Point guards don’t average many assists in the triangle. Offensively, his numbers are pretty much identical to D-Fish’s. There have been a couple of guys who went undrafted and became decent players (like Haslem and Jamario Moon, off the top of my head) and no one disparages them. The reason everybody says Smush sucks is because he disappeared come playoff time (in the last four games of the 2006 series he did NOTHING while Nash ATE HIM ALIVE; by the next years series he had lost his starting spot he was playing so poorly) and because his name was Smush, which makes him sound like an idiot. No one takes a guy named Smush seriously. He gets no respect.

  @pieman, Come on man, you can’t have both sides of the coin, don’t point to San Antonio’s post-season accolades and then herald the regular season victory by the Nuggets (who have struggled in the post season). Instead, look at it this way, the Nuggets are a team that is going in the wrong direction since the all-star break, and while this year has been better for them don’t fool yourself into thinking that they won’t get steamrolled by LA come playoff time. There is a legit argument for San Antonio, but I can’t see it happening with the Lakers dominance over them in the playoffs last year and the fact that LA has beaten them both in San Antonio and in Los Angeles this season. My real opinion is that LA has the West on lock (as for the finals, we’ll see, who knows), but I through Utah and Portland out there because thus far they have had some troubles with both teams when they met during the regular season. So if you really want to add the Spurs to that conversation, then go ahead. The Nuggets, not so much (same goes for the Mavs, Suns, Hornets, and Rockets).

My statement, however, is based on percentages (most ballers, just like most regular people, are fvcking d*cks) and Kobe’s own pompous words and deeds, which KB-riders tend to overlook in favor of his on-court performance. There’s nothing wrong with saying Kobe is a great player, but let’s not become so enamored by his skill with a basketball that we let it cloud our judgment of him as a rapist… uh, I mean, human being.

All I’m saying is, just because you respect someone’s game, it doesn’t mean that you have to respect him as a human being (or a teammate, in Smush’s case). If Smush had credited Kobe with being a great teammate, I would be skeptical. Still, I would not shout-down his right to express that opinion, as many who have commented here have (these are the people that I refer to as Kobe-riders). Until Kobe does something more to indicate that he is not a selfish, egomaniacal, shameless self-promoting a$$hole, I will maintain my hatred.   Thanks for your insight, truthteller. Thing is, I already said that I hate Kobe in my first post on this thread. However, it is also a fact that I would change my mind about him, if I had some evidence that contradicted my current opinion. You have not presented any such information. You have presented opinions (some in the form of hearsay). Ryan Jones weighed-in as a character witness for Smush at Mar.16 at 2:44 pm. Forgive me if I take his opinion more seriously than yours. Also, one could easily flip what you wrote in your second-to-last post: “Why don’t you grow some balls and just admit that you are a Kobe-rider, and that you will suck his d*ck no matter what?” Accordingly, I’m going to have to stick with my original judgment on this one.

  The reason this conversation doesn’t appear to be going anyplace is that you are attempting to tell me about myself. If you focused on an issue, you might have better luck in persuading me of whatever your point might be. Regarding my twin hatreds for Kobe and MJ, they spring from the same root. Most people agree that Kobe has (with some successes, but also some notable failures) attempted to ape Jordan. The apparent self-centered, politically unconscious, disingenuous, naked salesmanship with which they approach every facet of their lives is the real reason for my hate. They define the term “sell-out”. If these boys ever had souls, they pawned them long ago for a pack of Newports and some Puma sweats. In my opinion, the only people who could connect with such used-car-selling automotons are worthless pods, stuck in the matrix. Take the blue pill, truthteller.

  Sorry, guy. I’m not really into pharmaceuticals. Basically, for me, sports is an extension of life. I can’t support players that I would not want to kick it with in real life. That’s why, although I have been a Knicks fan my entire existence, I find it difficult to get any joy out of their (infrequent) victories these days. Out of everybody on the roster, only Wilson Chandler, Nate Robinson, and David Lee seem cool to me.
