Jackson: Celtics ‘Know How To Lose’

When huddles are aired on TV, usually they’re pretty bland. Last night, though, in the fourth quarter of Game 5, Phil Jackson dropped some bulletin board material for all the world to see and hear.

Check it out:

Well, since there was such an outcry about Paul’s “not coming back to LA comment” this surely will have put the final nails in the Paper Champions coffins once the Celts take it in.

  • mike

Chalkboard material for Doc – let’s go C’s!!!!!

  • http://twitter.com/HarryByrdMan44 LA Huey

Well, its true. And they almost did..People blow in-game comments way out of proportion (PP’s LA comments included).

  • Joey E.

after the game, Pierce smiled and said “well, he’s right”. Then he said how he doesnt care. He would have done the same thing. honestly, what do you want Phil to say?

  • Fat Lever

I don’t see what the big deal is. Is that fact not true? What’s Phil supposed to say? “Ok guys, there’s no way we’re winning this game tonight. Let’s pack it in and we’ll hope we win on Tuesday”. If the Celts didn’t want that statement to be said, they should have closed out the games they lost when they had the lead.

  • vtrobot

all of these “beefs” generated by the media are so silly and are really just created to keep writers writing. PP had a great response when someone tried to bait him by telling him about PJ’s comment. actually paul’s whole interview seemed refreshingly honest and candid last night. i understand it was because of the result of the game, but it was pretty much the opposite of KB24′s interview. yeah, what is a coach supposed to say at that point? “aw, heck guys, i know this is gonna hurt, but i gotta be honest with you. i just don’t see how we can possibly win this game. there’s just too many points to make up in too little time. fish, is there any way you can flop us a win?” my favorite quote from phil was when he once said that acid made his game better. C’s are getting loose and playing freer now. lakers should have taken care of biz when they had a better chance. maybe lakers fans will get “lucky” and not have to see ray if he has to miss the LA trip for family reasons, but do you really want more playing time for some of that bench crew? naw. lakers will show everyone how to lose (and act like spoiled kids) in a little more than a day.

  • d’bri

not a big deal, agree with the comments – same as PP comments. Phil’s right, they were terrible this year closing games. good thing playoffs are a completely different season.

  • BostonBaller

    no biggie…

  • http://slamonline.com Allenp

    1. It was a good speech to give your team.
    2. It was hella funny in live action.
    3. If you think this didn’t piss some of the Boston players off, you’re stupid.

  • T-Money

Just a coach trying to give his team an edge. In other words, coaching.

  • riggs

    @fat lever: that one game?

  • Smh

Well the celtics won so the speech kinda goes out the window..

  • The Philosopher

As great as Phil Jackson is as a coach, he’s basically saying that his team should just WAIT for Boston to lose the game in the 4th quarter? I’ll tell the truth: If that is how his Laker team is viewing the rest of this series, The Lakers are going to lose.

  • RyandC

@The Philosopher: No, PJax is basically telling his team not to give up and its far from impossible that they can come back to win the game.

  • LD

Basically, when you win, everything you said was prophetic and genious. If you lose, everything you said was stupid. But, no one knows if it is stupid or smart until the scoreboard at the end tells them.

@Eboy “once the Celts take it in.” So, you are on record as saying the Celtics will win, right? Just for documentation purposes. I’m still not sure who’s going to win, I just know it’s far from over.

  • http://www.twitter.com/retepadam Peter Nygaard

It was a great, great, savvy coaching move by Phil, and it’s being stupidly blown out of proportion by the media after the game. The Celtics were a Ron Artest free throw clinic away from being in a one possession game anyway, so the Celtics ended up proving Phil right in his assertion that they don’t know how to close games.

The whole thing is a non-story. At least Slam’s coverage of it wasn’t a joke like Yahoo!’s was.

  • OneStep

What he should have said was that it was all pointless whilst the refs swallow their whistles every time Kobe touches the ball. I’m a neutral as far as support is concerned in these finals but Kobe should be shooting 25 free-throws a night with the manhandling he’s having to play through. I only hope the balance is redressed back in LA because the officiating has been less than balanced so far.

  • Sparker

hey, it didn’t shift the tide and wasn’t exactly “win one for the gipper.” and now it’s extra motivation for a team that is already on a roll. if phil hadn’t said it himself, i’m he would have called it a “brain fart.”

  • http://www.stuffwhitepeoplelike.com Tarzan Cooper

Jackie moon, one game is not far from over

  • http://www.slamonline.com/ Myles Brown

He told the truth. The C’s agreed postgame. If you need motivation to win in the Finals…..you shouldn’t be in the f*cking Finals.

  • http://theurbangriot.com The Nupe

I’m not a big Pjax fan, I think he’s just been in some great situations when he’s had the 2 of the best players in the L on his team. Now he has arguable the best in the L with a strong supporting cast of all-stars. Despite that, I expeced more out of him than This ‘motivational’ speach. I’m not sure exactly what I expected, probably something like “we’ve come back from deeper deficits than this before” or “Let’s just play Laker ball the way we have all season and we’ll be right back in it” or something to lift his team. But this we’ll win because they know how to lose business just isn’t what I’d expect from an NBA coach trying to motivate his team.

Maybe he should tell Artest not to choke next time he shoots free throws at the end of a game.

  • J-Killer15

The media kills me when they blow simple comments like these out of proportion

If the Celtics know how to lose, they must have forgot last night.

    @Tarzan It’s all relative

  • Ian Campbell

At their bench during the game there is no room for mincing words. I also wonder why Phil isn’t expected to say the same thing that we say to each other as we watch the game. Phil was telling his players what they needed to hear. And if the Cs had blown it we would be talking about him being right. Good for the Celtics for taking the win and good for Phil saying what he has to to put the Lakers in a position to win. There is no real story here.

  • ab_40

ah the media doesn’t do anything with this. the boston players will use this as fuel especialy if it’s a close game in game 6. I really wonder what energy the boston bench is gonna feed off since the la crowd only exists beyond the 5th row

  • d’bri

i prefer this video anyway – rondo layup in slow mo. you can see just how close that play was to failing: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RXLn9Kzi8Fo

    Thanks, Myles.

Arrogant SOB has not being paying much attention to the playoffs 2010; regular season, this is not, PJ.

  • http://t2.gstatic.com/images?q=tbn:OzhW3M1GBSKkgM:http://fashionsensei.files.wordpress.com/2008/02/jackie-moon.jpg Jackie Moon

This series is full of arrogant SOBS!

  • Ronald

I think it was a brilliant move. I’m sure it was targeted for the players on the team who were more prone to panicking than players like Kobe or Fish. It’s not as unusual as a coach telling a player to..”Don’t let him drive right! Dude can’t dribble left to save his life.” Or, “Back off him! He can’t shoot.”

  • http://www.slamonline.com J

    and Pau agrees

  • Le Prince de Nsam

@ d’bri 8:05 great video man, and excellent choice of music. (Why was DFish the one garding PP?)

  • Fitzy

@ le Prince id say there was a back screen set there somewhere to send pierce streaking, not too sure though

  • http://slamonline.com Allenp

If you can’t shoot free throws, is it really choking when you miss them?
Ron Artest sucks from the free throw line regularly, expecting him to hit clutch free throws is a little asinine. Besides, the free throw thing is overblown. That’s not why the Lakers lost. They lost beause they could only muster 86 points besides having the two best scorers in the series on their team.

  • http://slamonline.com JL

what the hell happened to ron’s shot?

  • Thedon

^^ two best scorers in the series? last time I checked their wasn’t two kobe’s on the lakers. Don’t tell me you think Gasol is a better scorer than Paul? hahahahahaha

  • http://www.twiter.com/dfrance21 dfrance21

I think Allenp summed it up. The C’s arethe only team this playoffs routinely keeping the Lakers under 100 points.

@Onestep, if thats how you feel then Kobe should also foul out every game because he does a lot of manhandling himself when he plays defense.

It was so funny when he said it. I was like “what did he just say?”. Lakers would have made it back if Ron would have made those freethrows. Just because he signs with a better team, it’s not a reason to start lacking of in shooting.
