For Old Time’s Sake: Kenyon Martin

(on the Nets)… KMart was a shot-blocking, freakishly athletic power forward at Cincinnati and then in New Jersey. He and Jason Kidd formed arguably the best tandem in the Eastern Conference in the early part of this decade, reaching the Finals in the 2002 and 2003 seasons, although never winning a title. Interestingly, Martin is the last college senior to be drafted #1 overall and that was back in 2000. Pretty nuts. While he’s still going strong in the league, his bouts with injuries have held him back. Still, KMart was the man once upon a time. RIM WRECKER.

    Jason Kidd.
The greatest of all times at tossing alleys.

  • arjae828

yiikes…dunk on j. oneal was serious.

  • http://gmail dirty frank

Those were some wild times in NJ. I remember it was not uncommon for Kidd to cross half court and throw the ball towards the rim for KMart or RJ

  • http://www.laumol.nl/weblog Laumol

Haha, he either dunked off J-Kidd passes or R-Jeff misses.

  • http://www.kb24.com The Seed

Was very athletic and could do any dunk, but imagine if he would have had a jump shot and some post moves, he could have been a real difference maker in the NBA. BOOK IT!!

  • Fat Lever

Solid career, but should be considered a bust for being a #1 pick.

  • CheeseWhiz

One of my favorite slam covers !!

  • http://www.slamonline.com/ niQ

That’s cause Jason Kidd made him what he was back then. Jason Kidd sure made a lot people look good.

  • Overtime

Interesting pick Schneezy, Slam had it right, what a Rimwrecker! Dude was a beast.
Just a shame the block where he spiked it to like the opposite free throw line wasn’t included.

  • unrel

how is he a bust?.. he’s not HOF or top this and that.. but he’s not a bust.. you’d compare his career to Kwame Brown’s?.. dude started and contributed to 2 finals appearances..

  • http://www.springbored.net letsmotor

    couldn’t agree more with unrel.

  • http://slamonline.com GotHandles?

    JO gets the HAMMER.

  • http://google c_cantrell

    ^unrel..
yeah i cant see how hes a bust lol not a superstar but for sure not a bust

  • J-Mart

The Nets were never the same without K-Mart, and K-Mart was never the same without the Nets. Had he stayed healthy, and kept rising, he would be one of the most unstoppable four’s this game has ever seen.

  • unrel

i’d like to know who is a more deserving No.1 pick from that draft class.. good luck fat lever..

  • foolio iglesias

He wasn’t just dunking,he was throwing the ball at the floor through the basket…..

  • Fat Lever

Nobody else was, but, for my logic, if you’re going #1 overall, you should be borderline HOF material. Going number 1 means you are the best player assessed by the league(in most circumstances). I said he’s had a good(solid) career, but for a #1 pick, according to my criteria, the only way he’d get into the HOF is if he paid the $20 or whatever to get in. Also, he never developed an all-around offensive game, that you know, a number 1 pick should develop. He’s a good defensive player, but he had the tools to really make a difference, but for whatever reason, never took advantage of it. That is why he is a bust.

  • hammer

Shoulda done an FOTS when kenyon was in cincy. Pre-injury. That’s when he was @ his best. Str8 up animal. Cincy was favorite 2 win it all that year and then he gets injured n the tournament. What we saw in nj wasn’t even CLOSE 2 what he was in cincy

  • logues

Fat Lever: he was prolly the second best player on two straight finals teams, and their best player is a future HOF and 50 greatest player of all time. so i would say he isnt a bust

  • Fat Lever

Logues, I understand your POV, but he had the tools to be, maybe, a player similar to Shawn Kemp in his prime, which if Kemp was able to maintain, he would be a HOF’er. The tools were there, he just never maximized and took advantage of them.

  • http://slamonline.com Kap

That was the worst draft EVER!!!

  • larrylegend

    i could watch kidd’s passes all day…

  • http://slamonline.com Allenp

    Kidd vs. Nash.

  • Jordan

I forgot how vicious K-Mart used to be. The Nets used to be a fun team to watch. They were loaded at one point.

  • The Fresh Prince of Nsam

Definitely not a bust or u’ll have 2 invent new words 4 Kwame Brown, Michael Olowokandi, Darko Milicic

  • Fat Lever

Fresh Prince, why do you think the words Epic Fail were created?

  • barnabusb

Someone needed to box that guy out on the offensive glass.

  • NJ4Life

Scary thing is, some of Kidd’s best oops to him weren’t even on there. But 5 to 6 in Jersey, that was RUSH HOUR baby! God I miss those Nets teams.

  • total scrotal implosion

Still one of the best defenders, there was a time when he was arguably the best defensive player in the l, he could guard twos, and some ones. And did a good job on kobe

  • lupe

If you put it on mute it is actually a nice video

  • Sparker

j kidd when he still had wheels, kmart when he still had knees, and a kerry kittles sighting! those nets teams weren’t for the ages, but they were fun as hell to watch.

  • BK Chris

Seriously can we get a Hakeem Olajuwon or Jason “White Chocolate” Williams FOTS? At one point JWill was 1 of the most fun to watch PGs in the league!

  • http://slamonline.com Schneezy

@BK, check the archives. Already did Hakeem. JW is on the way.

  • http://www.twiter.com/dfrance21 dfrance21

I love the way he swings his arms off the rim after every two-hand dunk. And that dunk on JO was one of the best facials of all time.

Anyway, is it safe to say JKidd is arguably the best PG of all time?

  • http://thephotoriot.com davidR

can we get a FOTS on the we believe warriors?

  • The Philosopher

    @dfrance21:
Arguably the best point guard ever?
    Nah.
    One of the best, though.

  • MikeC.

Would it be ridiculous for me to ask that we reserve the FOTS section for retired players?

  • http://slamonline.com Schneezy

    @MikeC… YES

  • SchW

What about at the 0:55 mark… whos your daddy:)) And I think he probably has the most tip in dunks in the bball history… even though who wouldn´t have with a vert like that a Jefferson missing all those shots:))

  • dankNugs

im really impressed he managed to continue contributing after losing his hops when he had those knee surgeries, that was his whole effin game back then.

  • JTaylor21

KMart is cool and all but I’ll NEVER EVER forget the A** WHOPPING that Duncan put on him during the Finals. I’ve never seen a player (Duncan) dominate an individual match-up vs a supposed top player (KMart) in my life and don’t think I ever will again. KMart tried every move under the sun on offense and defense to try to counter TD and was straight PULVERIZED every single time.

  • Chou

JKidd to KMart! Never gets old!

  • http://www.slamonline.com Pardeep

    He was insane!

  • PSD605

watch this video and listen to jody breeze’s “my patna dem” damn then its a good video

  • http://slamonline.com Dave.

@Schneezy – Yinka Dare’s JWill mix is possibly the best highlight reel ever.
Also – look at the length of this man’s shorts on the cover! Holy cow!

  • http://thacorner.net/forums Kevin

What if dude would’ve never broke his leg coming out of Cincy?

  • Robb

    Meh!

  • Ronald

@Fat Lever: Your argument doesn’t stand because it’s obviously subjective. If, you look at all past picks etc, only about 5 picks draft stay longer than 4 years. And, it’s known to be that any pick past the 14th actually equates to garbage. Stastically, a perennial all-star player (which is kinda what you mean by borderline HOF player right) comes out about once every 3 or 4 drafts. So, a 1st pick that has lasted in a the league for such a long time like K-Mart with 2 final appearances doesn’t equate to him being a bust.

  • http://thetroyblog.com Teddy-the-Bear

Co-sign Mike C., although these are great, Mr. Schneezy.

  • DannyB

Man, that Nets team was sweet. JKidd, KMart, RJ, Kittles. Not championship material but a sweet team.

  • Anthony

1st Nets option: “Kidd is leading the break, pass to RJ, RJ shoots … wild miss but here’s come KMart for the putback !”

2nd Nets option: “”Kidd is leading the break, pass to Kittles, Kittles shoots … wild miss but here’s come KMart for the putback !”

  • http://Slamonline.com Pippen Ain’t Easy

on his draft: guaranteed top 5 pick
on another draft year: mid-late first round

  • tavoris

without the Leg injuries, K-Mart woulda been Shawn Kemp part II

  • http://nicekicks.com meloman2.0

since the Lebron Bassy cover, i have every single issue EXCEPT this one…. can SLAM hook it up?

  • http://Slamonline.com Matthew

@pippen ante easy, u never watched Kenyon in college. U said he was a top 5 pick for his draft or mid 1st rounder for any other? Kenyon avg over 18, 9, and 2 and was the most feared player in the NCAA. He was drafted 1st with a broken leg and went on to become a 2004 all star scoring 24 in the all star game.

  • http://Slamonline.com Matthew

Kenyon was so good @ UC we beat St Louis by 40pts in the last regular season game and he sat out the last 5 min. We then drew St Louis for the 1st round of the conference tournament less then a week later. Kenyon got hurt in the 1st 10 min and we ended up losing to them. Tell me who else swings scores by 50pts?
