For Old Time’s Sake: Vince Carter 2K

HANDS DOWN the greatest performance in Dunk Contest history put together by the greatest dunker of all time. It’s not Mike or Nique, it’s Vinsanity. What I remember most was how the NBA players reacted on the sidelines. Obviously, my midget 7th grade a$$ was going crazy but so were Vince’s fellow NBA superstars. 360 windmill, through the legs off a bounce, and sticking his arm through the hoop all in the same contest was nuts and incredible to watch . Enjoy it….again.

hands down best dunker in nba history.. not even an arguement so haters jus keep your mouths shut

  • oinestep

damn the 7th grade……..I already graduated from high school……..I must be getting old

  • basketblogger

favorite dunk was definitely the elbow in the rim. watching it live, the crowd was silent. but silent in a way where they were puzzled on why he just did a “regular” dunk. but when they showed the replay and showed he stuck is forearm in the rim, the whole arena and probably the entire country went nuts.

  • http://SLAMonline.com GotHandles?

    rocking the original Tai Chi’s.

  • J.Deneer

Outside of Vince putting on his show, I remember how nuts Steve Francis’ dunks were. Looked like little man was seriously flying!

  • Roberto

I miss the real dunk contests, I wish they would bring them back and not all this “Rising Stars” bull. Let the real dunkers do what they do best.

  • hammer

I remember recording it on vhs. Ha ha! Was 19 @ the time so I had never seen anything like that performance. It was crazy! My odest son,now 9,luvs watching this performance. Was and still is the greates slam dunk PERFORMANCE,not 2 b confused w/contest cuz it was no contest @ all, ever. Lbj aint got nuthin on half-man,half-amazing! U may NOT occupy the throne where vinsanity sits on this 1! 2 the kiddie table!

I think I was 8 when I saw this? Anyway, Vince was the reason why I fell in love with basketball in the first place. I was really bummed out when he left but I’ll always remember what he did for Toronto.

  • http://screwjams.tumblr.com cramzy

why? why would the basketball gods take him away from us? Why? Penny, Vince, T-Mac, Franchise, Grant Hill.. why?..

  • PapaBearATL

Vinsanity! NBA TV had every dunk contest since, I think, ’85 run in a marathon and I DVR’d all of them. Some I haven’t even watched yet, but my wife and I have watched the 2k dunk contest several times and it doesn’t lose its awesomeness!

  • hammer

@papabear. I dvr’d it as well and I’m keeping it. I had it recorded on vhs but my homie borrowed it and lost it just a couple days after it happened

  • Kadavour

Vince is the greatest dunker ever. I still can’t believe they call MJ’s leaner the greatest dunk contest dunk ever. JRich’s off the glass btwn the legs or even his 360 btwn the legs beats it. Vince’s Reverse 360 windmill beats it too :/

  • JTaylor21

Word up @Cantrell, MJ who? People like to act like MJ actually EVER took off from the FT line when in reality dude was always a half-a-step on the line. VC the dunker>>>>>>>every dunker except The Human Highlight Film.

  • dmoore

    no hate, greatest dunk contest performance of all time, but there’s a video a video of kobe doing a arm in the rim dunk in 1998;

  • reald1

  • http://SLAMonline.com GotHandles?

we can all agree that kobe is a better player than vince, but please do not even put them in the same sentence when we are talking about dunking. Kobe can jam but Vince is in a league of his own.

  • http://slamonline.com Allenp

The greatest show in dunk constest history? Really?
    Not to me.

  • JTaylor21

@AllenP then which one is? It’s hard to top something that was never done before, MJ’s was great but we already seen that sh*t before.

  • http://slamonline.com Allenp

What exactly had we never seen before?
Can you honestly say that you had watched all the previous dunk contests?
A while back when NBA TV was showing the dunk contest highlights, I watched pretty much all of them from the beginning, and I also watched them on YouTube
Vince was nice, but nothing he did was completely original. Like every contest, they were twists on things we’d seen already.

  • Yesse

Comparing this to the last dunk contest would be so wrong.

  • JTaylor21

So you’re telling me that someone did the “elbow in the rim dunk”, the 360 windmill before Vince did it, NAH it’s HIGHLY unlikely. Even some of JRich’s dunks were NEVER done before.

  • abaci

Feel free to call me a hater but i dislkie vince immensely.

  • http://www.need4sheed.com Tarzan Cooper

Vinces 360 windmill from under the rim was original. Jrichs off the glass between the legs was the sickest contest dunk ever, nothings close. He got so damn high, and did it on his first try, every time. Unlike other dunk contest ‘champs’ who shall remain nameless.

  • A l a n

Greatest dunker ever in his prime, no doubt about it

  • JTaylor21

@Tarzan, I know EXACTLY who you’re talking about. I won’t say his name either because I know that his fans are just around the corner. They are like roaches; they thrive in the darkness and when the spotlight’s on them, they scurry away back into the abyss.

  • http://slamonline.com the underrated one

healthy vince & tmac…… what if

  • http://thetroyblog.com Teddy-the-Bear

My favorite player when he was on the Raptors.

  • http://nicekicks.com meloman2.0

Co-sign basketballblogger…. that dunk had everyone speachless, it had shaq looking like a damn fool… and how are we forgetting about t-mac in this contest… he went hard too

  • http://slamonline.com Saviour

2nd video is epic, love it….thanks for posting it up.

  • Roger

Is this how VC will be remembered forever? Maybe so. Still, I’d like to think that he had more potential than TMac ever did. It always seemed to me that VC was always hesitant to become “the man” on any of his teams. He had a nice shot. He had athleticism. He just did not have the discipline or the drive to get him to be “the man”. Still, great memories of when I began to love the NBA.

  • dmoore

lol at you all ignoring the evidence of kobe doing the arm in rim dunk in a shopping mall in ’98 before vince did it in the 2000 dunk contest, you mad??

  • Czechmate

If only VC and McGrady stuck it out in Toronto together, they both could have possibly experienced the NBA Finals a couple of times.

  • http://www.slamonline.com J

the reverse 360-windmill is one of my all time favorites.

  • http://www.slamonline.com J

and speaking of dunk contests, it’s still fresh to me how Iggy was robbed in 06. sigh..

  • http://www.yamahyouth.com Gerwin

Cosign AllenP. There have been better dunk contest, with better competition. What makes this one stand out is how easy the dunks of Vince are made. Is he even sweating? Enjoying them everytime I see them.

  • Klemperer

Yes, Kobe did it in 98. And sorry, that VC charity vid is from Zo’s Summer Groove summer 2000 (even after the dunk contest). But…I remember seeing a guy do it in a dunk contest on the Sinbad show in the mid nineties. This was not new to the streets…just the NBA. (And VC’s still the greatest ever period).

  • http://slamonline.com Saviour

The elbow drunk was around way before Kobe or VC did it, you’ll be telling us JR Rider was the first to go between his legs with the east-bay-funk-dunk.

Check your history before letting your fingers make you look silly.

  • hammer

Its like how a lot of people r sayin how cool it would b if sum1 would try a 720 dunk attempt, like it has never been done b4. It has been done b4. Just not n the nba. Same thing w/the bow dunk

  • hammer

Speaking of carters dunks,I can’t help but think bout the dunk that he didn’t complete. The 1 where ed cota tossed him a pass off the backboard against the f****n dookies. Any1 remember that 1? My heels were blowin out duke and cota tossed it off a fastbreak. VC was head level w/the rim, caught the ball w/2 hands but missed it. Woulve been 1 of the gr8 college dunks of all time. The dean smith wouldve erupted on that 1

  • http://www.fiba.com Darksaber

….then later that summer, Frederic Weiss got himself some Vinsanity…
