Best Performances At MSG

MJ, Kobe, Iverson, King and more…

With the season over and a lockout looming, there’s not much else NBA fans can do but reminisce and reflect. Over the past few weeks, we’ve posted several video galleries on a spectrum of topics, from the greatest international players to the best dunks of the season to the most thrilling buzzer-beaters, and so on. Now add this one to the list. Below is footage of 10 of the best scoring performances ever at Madison Square Garden. These performances aren’t solidified as the 10 best, but at the least they’re certainly considerations. Performing at your highest level in the World’s Most Famous Arena is no easy task, but as the adage goes, pressure can either bust pipes or build diamonds, and these guys did the latter.Eldon Khorshidi

Disclaimer: Obviously some better scoring barrages went down at the Garden, but not many of those are on the internet. For instance, Patrick Ewing’s career-high 51 points are nowhere to be found. Also, Michael Jordan, Bernard King, Kobe Bryant and others have had several stellar games, but each player only gets one video. And finally, “best” is tough to asses and rank. For this gallery, we factored in the ways each player got their baskets, the magnitude of the game, and prior history/affiliations.

    HOLLA this is dope.

    Rajon Rondo likes this.

    1. Jordan was digging in Stark’s cheeks like a wedgie.
    2. LeBron needs to watch some Bernard King tapes.

Cosign #2 on Allen’s comment. Big Time Cosign.

  • robb

All were fantastic performances. The ’95 Knicks played the best defense though, so I’d go with MJ’s 55.

  • Yann Blavec

I’ve just watched the MJ and Bernard King videos. Has anyone heard of double teaming ?

  • http://thetroyblog.com Teddy-the-Bear

Stephon vs. AI–always a good matchup.

  • Oli

    where’s lebron’s near triple double a couple of days after kobe’s 61?! he had something like 52, 12 & 9!

  • Tev

Isn’t Allan Houston’s video supposed to say his career high at MSG? His actual career high (home or away) is 53.

Uh its on here Oli.. And Yann, was thinking the same thing dude.

  • Drew

    @ Oli – Pay Attention it’s video 6

  • HIboy808

All of jordan’s highlights were one on one…. if kobe played in the 90s where the was no zone, he would destroy any kind of defense thrown his way

Here we go again with the zone D somehow being tougher than man D crap. When was the last time an all-time great defensive team e.g., 89 Pistons, 92 Knicks, 96 Bulls and 08 Celtics resorted to playing zone?

JTaylor: Hilboy doesn’t know about hand checking, it’s alright bro. Let him be.

  • eugene

Idk why but the Iverson vs Steph is my favorite, Nates buzzer beater is pretty sick as well.

If Steph woulda started his shoe line in the prime of his career he definitely would’ve sold more.

And Kobe Bryant is simply amazing, that’s one of the best games he ever played.

  • saywaaa?

that 45 on jordan looks so weird…

  • DukeFromDeep

I do love SLAM during the off-season ever so much. You guys know how to spin an article and you keep me interested with the best comments, so kudos again. I saw some of these game at the time (on tv), like the Jordan one,The Miller one, the Sprewell one, the Kobe and LBJ ones were good too but I gotta say the outright BEST of them all was MJ’s for sure. He flat out kills it. Dude was a juggernaut. And everygame he proved it. Keep it up SLAM !

  • Oli

my apologies. it was late here in germany…

  • http://slamonline.com Ugh

@Yann: Doubling Jordan? Did you watch the last five seconds of that game?

  • Kyle

Jordan was great, and the best time ever obviously… but watch the play he does on Starks. No foul, but he got a freebie. The Knicks seem like they didn’t know how to guard him. Why could Vernon Maxwell play such great defense on him? His scoring in this game looks more like Allen Iverson than anyone else really. One on one basketball…

    Classic material.

  • KING DAVID

kobe bryant’s performance was legendary, and i hate kobe

  • http://www.optimabbc.be Max

Anyone else thinks the 2001 ASG was one of the if not the best ASG?

  • MarkEMark

JTaylor21 is a fool, thats all boston did in 08 was play a zone against kobe…http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nepmd2ygMK4

  • http://slamonline.com Eldon Khorshidi

@Tev You’re right, Sir. Fixed now. Thanks for the correction.

  • celts4ever

    why jordan wears number 45

  • Yann Blavec

it’s incredible how iverson looks frail on the court.

  • http://slamonline.com Tae

Kobe’s 61 hands down. Tha most points scored by anyone at tha Garden. Tha first person to have tha Garden chant MVP, and he had tha crowd buzzing tha whole game. Everytime he touched tha ball people were on tha edge of their seat. Cant count out tha others but, Kobe 61

  • Todd Spehr

Iverson’s MSG debut for Philly in Nov ’96 was a memorable night: 35 points and a rare Sixer win. He was friggin’ electric that night.

  • http://slamonline.com Ugh

@Kyle – Not doubling Jordan was a defensive decision that various coaches made in the 90s. In the 80s the more Jordan scored per Bulls possession the less the Bulls won, to the point where Phil Jackson tried to keep Jordan off the court if he had a strong first half. Riley usually only doubled Jordan in the paint, which was feasible because the Bulls rarely had a low post scorer, which obviously burned the Knicks in this case.
The same coaching philosophy is debated as good or bad with Kobe – when he takes over games the Lakers lose is a popular, though hard to prove, view.

  • Zabba

I think that meth addict dude who wrote a book is in the Sprewell video. He looks effed.

  • TimBoSlice
