Derrick Rose Uncut (VIDEO)

The Bulls’ PG opens up to SLAMonline for the first time after his ACL injury.

by Aggrey Sam / @CSNBullsInsider

As much as I hated to leave the NBA Summer League in Las Vegas after watching just one day of action last month, my subsequent trip to L.A. was worth it. I got a chance to catch up with Derrick Rose and while it was good to talk to him on the record about his recovery from May ACL surgery, his new kicks and gear, the Bulls’ offseason and even his devastating injury, it was much more gratifying just to see him doing well.

I cover the Bulls and I’m not from Chicago, so it’s easy for me to look at the team from a more clinical perspective, but Derrick is one of the more genuine people—not just NBA players—that I know, period. Living in the Windy City, it’s impossible not to notice how the mood of his hometown turned melancholy immediately after he went down on that fateful late April afternoon, so to see him in such an upbeat mood was great to see.

I’ll stop rambling in a second, since you can watch the video of our interview in Hollywood, but I’ll say this: Derrick won’t be the same exact player immediately after he returns to the hardwood, but especially after talking to him, more than ever, I believe that he’ll get back to the level he was at before, then improve upon it. If anyone is built, both mentally and physically, to handle the adversity of such a severe injury, get through the rigors of a long rehab process and obliterate whatever revised expectations people have for his future, it’s @drose.

Aggrey Sam covers the Chicago Bulls for Comcast SportsNet Chicago.

If rose keeps developing his game he will be the next Larry Hughes

Has a great attitude. I think he’ll come back better than he was when he left. Better jumpshot. Scary to think about. My only concern for him would be the team he’s coming back to. Hopefully, by the time he’s 100% they’ll have a better squad around him so that he doesn’t have to carry the weight offensively by himself.

Like seeing him talk at length. Good stuff, Aggrey.

Decieving headline. I thought my hypothesis that he’s not circumsized would be proven right.

    @LA WOW

HE’LL be back with a better shot but think he won’t have the jumping ability like he use to

Great attitude about the whole situation. His full Recovery is starting to look very promising.

D Rose is a hard worker and i’m interested to see how he works around this injury. I think he’ll come back as a different style of player and start to develop more point guard skills. Get well soon, Derrick

Hopefully his jumpshot will be better. Little things will improve. He will not regain his explosiveness. Rose fans are delusional. I sure hope he is more than pure athleticism.

  • ByAnyMeansNecessary

No one knows if he’ll regain his explosiveness or not. Depends on the player. I think he will. None of us know for sure. We’ll see when he’s 100% in the ’13-’14 season.

Explosions and leap will be back, I had the same injury and 5 months after surgery I still jump as high as before.

you guys ever watch american ninja warrior? Those obstacle courses are crazy..some American was in Japan like a year ago for the show and messed up his whole leg..torn acl mcl pcl i believe…He got surgery, rehabbed and entered the contest in America like 6 months later. He completed the course (which is an great accomplishment in itself) and he posted the second fastest time.

  • pposse

the guys name is Drew Drechsel, he tore the ACL, MCL, chipped his femur in Japan and in the next season of the show (not sure the about the gap in between seasons) when they filmed in America he participated and was doing the same stuff he was doing pre injury. He was one of the best competitors on the show too.
