Dude, what do you mean “Against the Toronto Raptors?”. Most of these NBA players couldn’t score 81 if the other team had 3 player on the court. Droppin’ 81 on any NBA team is a huge thing. Don’t try to degrade it. About Wilt – it’s not smart to compare the two achievement. Different times.

ehh, Wilt scored 100 on a team that only had one player taller than 6’9″, none within 30lbs of Wilt and his teammates were force feeding him the ball. What Kobe did was pure unadulterated scoring genius. But his 62 in 3 quarters against Dallas was better.

The Raptors were arguably the worst defensive team in the league. Watch the game again, Kobe was basically walking through the defense. The Raptors had just as many competent defensive players as the Knicks had

I dont know man, the way the lane is wide open right now makes for some pretty easy scoring. The game has just changed a lot, but people have always scored a lot of points in every era

Naw, factually speaking, scoring has gone down pretty consistently over time. Evolution of the game, an increased focus on defense. Which at the NBA level was not really a focus at all for entire teams until the “Bad Boy” Pistons showcased what a great defensive unit (for their era) could do. Plus Jordan was playing in the illegal defense era where zones were outlawed and isolations ruled the land. Kobe scored 81 against a man to man and 1-2-2 zone. The only thing Toronto didn’t do (inexplicably) was double team him every time he touched the ball.

Some food for thought about the Wilt-Kobe debate, featuring actual relevant data rather than flaming opinion.
The Lakers were 22-19 and the Raptors were 14-27. The Warriors were 47-29 and the Knicks were 27-46. So the Warriors were relatively better than Knicks than the Lakers were the Raptors. Conclusion: Wilt had a relatively less skilled opponent.
The Raptors were on the fourth game of a five game road trip in January, the Lakers were at home, having just played host to the Heat, then played road games in Sacramento and Phoenix. Both the Warriors and Knicks were on the road playing an away game in Hershey, PA – however, Wilt lived in NY. Wilt travelled the same distance as his opponent to get to to the game, and in fact gave two of them a ride. Conclusion: Kobe was at better rested, at home against a fatigued team.
It was January for Kobe, and he was averaging 41mpg, 41 games into the season. Wilt was playing the 80th game of the season in which he had played almost every minute of every game, and some overtime games, too, averaging 48.5mpg for the year. Conclusion: Kobe was better rested from that perspective, too.
Kobe was single teamed (as Jalen will tell you). Wilt was consistently double teamed and played the fourth quarter with three or four Knicks on him, and the last few minutes with the entire team on him. (Source: “Wilt, 1962″, and the radio broadcast of the game). Conclusion: Wilt was playing against harder defence. Wilt played when not only was hand-checking legal, but full body checks were routine and punching wasn’t out of the ordinary. (Addendum: Wilt was once hit by an uncalled fouled so hard it knocked two of his teeth into his jaw. He stayed in the game.)
Wilt went 36-63 (57%) from the field and 28-32 (87%) from the line. Kobe went 28-46 (61%) from the field, 18-20 FT (90%). Kobe had a better shooting game. Had Kobe been limited to 2 point FGs, his 7 threes would have made his score 74. Conclusion: Kobe was more efficient.

What to draw from this? Irrespective of the level of athleticism and talent over the two eras (which, on close analysis of actual game footage from the 60s, is actually less important than other factors involved, like refereeing and the excruciating schedule and transport faced by the players in the old days), Kobe had an easier time of it. Given the single teaming he got from the Raptors, how rested he was in terms of being at home and the point in the season, he barely performs better than Wilt, who is multi-teamed, at the end of a year in which he is setting an all-time record for most minutes played. He also scores an extra seven points from the three point line – and, contrary to popular belief, Wilt’s game in his early career was a mid-range game and the eyewitness accounts chronicled in “Wilt, 1962″ indicate much of his first half was scored from mid-range jumpers.
I don’t think Kobe’s 81 is better than Wilt’s 100.
