Amir Johnson Throws Mouthpiece at Referee David Jones (VIDEO)

by Marcel Mutoni@marcel_mutoni

Needless to say, Amir Johnson will soon find himself in a world of trouble with the NBA.

In a wholly bizarre scene last night in Portland, during yet another frustrating Toronto Raptors defeat (that ended their 0-5 road trip in the worst way possible), Johnson lost his mind after being ejected, proceeding to throw his mouthpiece at referee David Jones.

According to published reports and the Blazers’ TV broadcasters, the mouthpiece struck Jones in the back as he chatted with Raptors head coach Dwane Casey.

Following the game, Amir Johnson explained himself.

Per the Toronto Sun and Star:

“It’s out of character, my teammates know me, fans know me if they’ve been watching my career, I never lose my cool,” said Johnson. “I never say anything to the ref or get mad, the only techs I ever got were for hanging on the rim or slapping the backboard. Before every free throw, I always go rub the ball and give it right back to the ref. The ref didn’t let me have the ball and we kind of got into a tug of war. No words were really said and from then on he ejected me out of the game and I kind of lost my cool from there.”

It came at the worst possible time for the Raptors, who lost Andrea Bargnani to an elbow injury after just eight minutes and Kyle Lowry to an injury to his right triceps that sidelined him for the second half. [...] Johnson knows the mouthpiece toss could be trouble for him. “I’m going to accept the consequences,” Johnson said. “Whatever happens, happens. Like I said, I apologize if I hurt anybody or did anything wrong. But it is what it is.”

Expect the League to act swiftly, and harshly.

i was hoping he would smack the referee so Stern could speak against thuggin returning to the NBA

  • Redd

What an idiot, I always thought he was decent but he’s clearly too dumb to be anymore than that.

  • MUBWAR

so he stopped your routine and you lost your mind 4 no damn reason. amir is a cool dude

  • Da-Meat-Hook

You’re right, he usually is a stand up dude in the community and a great hard working teammate. This was just pure stupidity. He deserves a harsh penalty for this childishness.

  • Lauren23

Happened to a lot of players in any sports too loose their cool and some in much more awfulll ways, completly understandable when ur in one of the worst team in the nba

  • RunNGun

That was where amazing didn’t happen.

  • roscoe

Publicly apologize immediately or you will end up playing in a far away land.

  • shockexchange

    Imaginary giant, or chasing windmills?

  • Stroshow

To be fair he does touch the ball after free throws every single time. I dunno why this ref was different.

  • Redd

h it’s mad wack as a grown man to do that. He again has shown he can be good just needs to want it more.

  • spit hot fiyah

    that’s one expensive mouth guard

  • initbruv

“…Yeah but he wouldn’t let me rub the ball…” What a goof.

  • initbruv

Well just like Don Quixote he got a reality check in the end.

  • Comment_System

JJ’s reaction and his coach’s reaction was hilarious.

  • JJ Hickson

It’s easy to say Amir is a dumb, but ther real deal is that the ref is a ganster. He knows he has the wisthle (gun) and he kick Amir out without excuses. Amir says him nohing, you can see that at the moment the ref releases the ball he is moving the wistle to his mouth.
I’d like to watch that ref doing that on a street basketball game.
    Mafia!

  • initbruv

But see that’s the point, it isn’t street basketball. You can’t go grab the ball out of the ref’s hands. That should be obvious.

  • dalileo

I say it again. Amir says nothing to the ref ater him releases the ball. Do you pay for watching a ref sending players out just because he wants to be on top?.

  • fruizm

    Take your christmas tree down!!

  • pposse

a bball player from the 90s wouldn’t do this – mental midgetry yet again at its finest..players these days..

  • Key_34

Willing to give Amir a pass. Looks like it was just a frustration thing. Unfortunately boiled over into 5-15secs on the court. He’s not D Cousins or somebody with a rep of that kind of stuff.

  • Teddy-the-Bear

Some players are borderline OCD when it comes to habits/routines, so if that’s something does every time, I can understand why he’d be a pain to the ref. But there had to be something else… because that didn’t warrant an ejection.

  • speedy

Would have been crazy when the ref answered by throwing his dentures after Amir.

  • Tempest

Amazing effort to hit the ref with his mouthpiece whilst the suited dude was trying to block it! Amir you animal!

  • Dagger

The closest my Raptors have come to relevance this season.

  • initbruv

Well they have to control the game. That’s just part of their job. Players can’t just do whatever the f*** they want (like grabbing the ball out of the ref’s hands to rub it), there has to be order.

  • initbruv

I was thinking the same thing. Props to him for that.

  • Thyr Rodrigues

in the immortal words of Red Forman: “Dumbass!”

  • naefy

Breaking news: Amir Johnson fined 20000000 dollars by David Stern and the NBA

  • bike

Stern should immediatly declare that ball rubbing is no longer allowed.

  • tamil

this is so unlike amir. i hope people who dont know amir johnson that well dont take him the wrong way. he just wanted to touch the ball after the free throw for good luck in hope tha the player misses. he does this every game its just this ref is being a dick. the nba refs have been a dick to the raptors all season. FREE AMIR

  • Fat Lever

“I always go rub the ball”. Kim K wholly approves this statement. And the look on Casey’s face tells it all. Utter disappointment, like a parent dealing with the fallout of the actions of an immature child.

  • Emerson

Lol the team is doing horrible and their on a 5 game losing streak. Not to mention the refs haven’t shown the Raps any respect since the start of the season. It was just frustration boiling over. He’s gonna serve his punishment and that’ll be that. I’m sorry everyone is not a uber-disciplined marine like you, I mean who would thought that a person could actually do something out of character because of frustration right?

  • Redd

Idk you’d be one of the rare idiots who would hold on to a ball as if to say “my toy! Being mature and not stupid doesn’t require marine training.

  • http://www.slamonline.com/ gordon

well, as long as ‘it is what it is’, i guess that thoroughly explains this otherwise bizarre situation.

  • http://www.slamonline.com/ gordon

I think the ref handled it well. You don’t just let guys rip the ball out of your hand. Well, if they insist, you let him. You just throw him out after they’ve had the ball-rub they so desired

  • http://www.facebook.com/people/Mike-Gilbert/100001749589586 Mike Gilbert

This has to be the absolute dumbest way to get ejected. Well actually maybe the time Tim Duncan got ejected for laughing lol

  • http://www.facebook.com/people/Mike-Gilbert/100001749589586 Mike Gilbert

Pietru was just looking at him like, maybe i shoulnt have signed with the raptors…

  • K_HOLIDAY

I thought it was pretty amazing he hit the ref with the mouthpiece while being held back (double teamed). Slogan still stands true in my book lol

  • K_HOLIDAY

Amir should’ve Marquez’ed that ref! If you’re going to get ejected, fined, and look like an @$$, might as well go all the way with it!

  • prude

Taking something out of your mouth and throwing it at someone is just plain nasty. Like spitting on someone. Just nasty and disgusting. It’s gross and revolting. Reminds me of the time I saw someone hurl a steaming turd at another dude. Grossed me out big time.

  • http://twitter.com/Jzakoni Sanchez

    LOL

  • http://twitter.com/Jzakoni Sanchez

when keeping it real goes wrong

  • http://twitter.com/Jzakoni Sanchez

that move was pretty childish and unsanitary

  • mike mike

He just wanted to give the ref a mouthful

  • robb

stupid reaction from Amir, but that ref’s full of sh*t

  • http://www.facebook.com/people/Junior-Taylor/100003121138419 Junior Taylor

Years of being an underachiever are getting to him.

  • http://www.facebook.com/people/Junior-Taylor/100003121138419 Junior Taylor

I’m tired of you always disrespecting today’s players with your bullsh*t. What the f*ck are you doing in your life to be talking sh*t about professional athletes.

  • Downtown

Haha I was there last night and I must admit it was one of the most hilarious NBA moment I’ve ever seen! The ref got more and more annoye everytime he rubbed the ball after free throws and after they fought the red told him to get the F out! Classic stuff

  • danpowers

    lol

  • KBM

Haha I can c y working class ppl do not like this league of pampered millionaires. I am slowly but surely being drawn to their side…

  • MrWonderful

I wish the nba would hire former nba players as refs. or at least guys that are the same size as nba players. Amir Johnson would’ve thought twice before throwing his mouth piece at Dennis Rodman.

  • Lan

Ref was smart enough to get some distance before throwing the tech.

  • Draak Grafula

LOL! Dennis Rodman as a ref. That’s an idea that’s great and horrible at the same time.

  • Ugh

Only because nobody wore a mouthpiece in the nineties. Headbutting, shoulder bumping, chest bumping, screaming in their faces, throwing the ball at them, though, was a-okay.

  • Ugh

    Nobody cares.
