Kobe Bryant Angry and Confused After Another Lakers Loss (VIDEO)

by Marcel Mutoni@marcel_mutoni

Kobe Bryant did what he could to carry his listless Lakers last night in Cleveland — the NBA’s leading scorer poured in a season-high 42 points, but once again, it was not enough to earn a win. Los Angeles is now 1-10 this season when Bryant scores 30 or more points, and has an improbable overall record of 9-13.

Kobe, who is normally arrogant and defiant regardless of how poorly his team is playing, seemed dejected following the loss to the Cavaliers, and said he’s baffled by the ongoing struggles. Bryant even wondered out loud if the Lakers are perhaps a little too old.

Per the LA Times:

A rattled and clueless Mike D’Antoni, asked whether this latest Lakers’ debacle against a Cleveland team with only four wins was embarrassing, said: “No. “It’s basketball. I hate it. I’m down. But I’m not embarrassed … that’s a harsh word. I’m not embarrassed.” A few minutes later the same question was put to Kobe Bryant, and “yes,” he said, he was embarrassed. “This is the toughest stretch, the most challenging stretch in my 17 years for sure,” said Bryant while sitting calmly in front of his locker taking on all questions. Is Kobe upset? “I’m very upset, and in the past I would blow my top and go crazy,” he said. “Then I had a head coach [Phil Jackson] who always kept calm and I learned from that. “I’m trying to do the same thing here, but I won’t lie; they’re messing with my Zen stuff.”

As for what ails the Lakers, Bryant said turnovers — “and I’ve got to do a better job of that myself” — and transition defense are the two biggest culprits. “Last year we got beat in the playoffs by transition points and this year it’s still an Achilles’ heel for us. I don’t know if we’re too slow of a team and we got to change things up a little bit and play a slower game. I don’t know the answer.” That’s what we are getting out of D’Antoni? Is it as simple as waiting for the return of Pau Gasol and Steve Nash? “No,” Bryant said. “Those issues are still there. With Steve and Pau there in the lineup we still didn’t win a preseason game. Pau isn’t the fastest guy in the world and neither is Steve. Actually, we’re slow as hell. I’m one of the fastest guys on the team and I’m like 50.”

This is the first time since the 2005 season that the Lakers have been four games below .500. That team became the first Laker squad to miss the Playoffs in the past 18 years.

No one expects the 2012-’13 Lakers to suffer a similar fate, of course. They could get healthy and eventually go on a run. So far, though, they proven to be a major disappointment.

Lakers are 1-10 when Kobe jacks up 20+ FGA.

It’s been a decade of the same trend but in all cases it’s because his teammates are lazy and aren’t emulating the effort and tenacity on the defensive end that Kobe exemplifies.

  • http://twitter.com/Jzakoni Sanchez

Things just keep getting shakey up in L.A. I can’t imagine the drama that’ll pop off if they lose in NY next..
I feel for Kobe tho. Difficult to stay positive when shits hitting the fan

  • http://twitter.com/Jzakoni Sanchez

    That’s a wild stat. 1-10

  • Redd

    LA still has Halle Berry.

  • MeloMan14

Feel sprry for Kobe? why? If this were Melo or Lebron scoring all these points and losing they would get blasted by everyone. But for some reason Kobe gets a pass.

  • http://twitter.com/Jzakoni Sanchez

We feel sorry for him cause he has Jim buss lol

  • http://www.facebook.com/pat.barnett.16 Pat Barnett

It’s the curse of Dwight Howard. He is all smiles and silly and it rubs off on the team. When he played here in Orlando we all used to wonder why they were running up and down the court so slow until the last quarter. If you get payed that much you should run as fast as you can at all times. Pampered millionaires. We had a lot of turnovers too because the other teams know that play #1 is to get it to Howard and then the team didn’t know what to do next and passed the ball around until they lost it. Looks to be the same in L.A.

    Please Trade me.
    -mamba out

  • MJ Wannabe

just look at 1:45 in the fourth quarter against the cavs, excellent defence on Kyle Irving by Kobe 10 time NBA all defensive first team

  • coyboo

trade kobe for wade? makes chaotic sense to me

  • https://twitter.com/Wayne__o BuenoWayno1

The Lakers are 8-3 when Kobe has 5 or assist and 1-10 when Kobe takes 20 FGA’s……MESSAGE!

  • http://twitter.com/sooperfadeaway nbk

too bad he doesn’t put that together on more then the occasional possession

  • bike

PJ has reportedly offered consultant services to LAL for a bargin rate of $3 million/hour. That includes Buddhist meditation sessions, hot yoga classes, and mandatory reading of ‘Who Moved my Cheese’.

  • shockexchange

The Shock Exchange can’t wait to see how “confused” he’s going to be when D12 refuses to re-sign. (D12 voice) “Hello Brooklyn”

  • http://www.facebook.com/jay.brodes Jay Brodes

this aint good and it is getting old. kb sans the turnovers looks fine. rest of the team not so much. no point guard and no one plays defense..this is the result! kinda sad!

  • AndyK

    ha so true!

  • ado

because he’s a proven winner and champion.

  • AndyK

I do feel sorry for Kobe. The Lakers are my second team besides the Wolves (I do still consider them my second team because of the Minneapolis ties). I’ve always hated Howard though. He’s a joke. His intensity is terrible and treats the public like we’re idiots (remember when in an interview with Ric Bucher he tried telling us that he couldn’t sign an extension right now…and Ric said Uh Dwight, yes you can.)

  • AndyK

Therefore even though I love Kobe, I do want the Lakers to lose until Howard gets the hell out of there.

  • AndyK

Yup I agree. Howard is such a joke.

  • robb

That’s true, but honestly Kobe can’t defend like that and then go to the offensive end and lead the attack. He’s too old. Hopefully when Nash comes back and takes care of the ball Kobe can focus more on his D.

  • http://twitter.com/sooperfadeaway nbk

Kobe hasn’t focused on Defense in a decade. Don’t expect him to start anytime soon.

  • shockexchange

Does anybody really believe that the Lakers’ current roster is better than MWP, Odom, Pau Gasol / Andrew Bynum at the same ____ time … two skilled 7 footers at the same ____ time, Horry Jr, and “a PG to be named later?”

  • ChosenOne

I guess it’s all on Nash to save the season huh?..

  • Max

Watch the Lakers get Phoenix’ medical staff in the offseason!

I think what people don’t realize is that Kobe tries to shoot the Lakers out of deficits when his team is listless. If he’s giving up the rock to Dwight/Jamison, and nothing is happening for 3 straight posessions and the team is down 7, he’s going to start shooting. when the team is winning and other players are stepping up, he’s a pretty willing passer.

  • http://twitter.com/sooperfadeaway nbk

except Jerry Buss has still been making the decisions.

  • Jerome

Kobe’s frustrated because there are a lot of teams in the L that are better than the Lakers right now.

  • RayJr

Hate the “1-10 when Kobe scores 30 or more” stat. That is not the only reason the Lakers are losing those games. In almost all of those games the other team is shooting more and/or shooting a much better percentage than the Lakers. Opposing teams are getting easy looks and layups, LA is not coming over on help defense and as a team LA isn’t getting defensive boards like they should which in turn leads to easy put backs and second chance points.

  • Fat Lever

    Halle Berry or Hallelujah?

  • Dymez

I don’t know if he’s that selfish or mentally defected. He continuously jacks up shots and loses. The numbers are there. Get your teammates involved so they can establish rhythm and flow. The guy who considered the second best player on the team only gets 9 shots? That’s ridiculous.

  • Redd

    Pick your poison friend.

  • ashemsmashem

Players neeed to give effort EVERY night. The lakers score enough to win, they just can’t stop anybody. Dwight wentn3/9..does he need more touches…yes..but he also needs to expand his offense game…its far to east to guard him. Jamison needs to do better than 3/10 & 9 points….if kobe stops scoring, who else will ? Can you get solid production from them every game? I’ve watched all the games & it hasn’t happened

  • Caboose

I’ll give him credit, he at least took responsibility for the turnovers. It’s funny seeing the Lakers record in games where Kobe scores 30 or more and in games decided by under 10 points.

  • z

Ok bottom line how much of the struggling is kobe ‘sfault, bball savant?

  • http://twitter.com/sooperfadeaway nbk

almost 1%. – i was just pointing that out because hoping Kobe focuses on D, is like hoping my shoe turns into a bucket of liquid gold
LAL’s struggling is the result of injuries. An irrational coaching change (in terms of WHEN they did it), and a system that hasn’t had time to be implemented.
i still think they will end up a top 3 team in the West. Even if their record doesn’t directly represent it.

  • Sérgio

Man, it was painful to watch the Lakers yesterday. The defense is pathetic. It looked like Cleveland scored in every possession. The rotations are bad, they don’t force turnovers, the big men don’t block shots – even Dwight has stopped doing it.

At the same time, the offense is not creative at all. Howard absolutely needs to get more touches, but he also fumbles and does not hold the ball well way too often. And the other players, except Kobe, only shoot 3s. Why, for Gods sake? Jamison, MWP, Duhon and Meeks arent that good snipers to keep insisting on that shot all the time.

Hell, I’m even starting to miss Mike Brown! Last season, at least LA had a decent defense.

NBK, since you live in Phoenix, you probably have accompanied those D’Antoni/Nash’s Suns teams. So, to you, why do you think they haven’t gotten to the Finals in all those years? Was it the lack of defense? Or the matchups? Or even bad luck (like the suspensions against the Spurs)?

  • http://twitter.com/vannshy vannshy

nbk just out of curiousity, does your top 3 team in the West include the Spurs ?

  • http://www.facebook.com/people/Junior-Taylor/100003121138419 Junior Taylor

Everyone is so concerned about that stat of the Lakers being 1-10 when Kobe scores 30+ pts when they should be focused on a lack of effort on the defensive end from Kobe all the way down to the last guy on the bench. That one play towards the end of the 4th qtr when Kyrie drove down the left baseline and hit Sideshow Bob for the 8-footer is a perfect example of what I’m talking about.. Duhon and Kobe were right there but neither for some strange reason decided to help out and contest Varajeo’s shot. It all starts on the defensive end and when the supposed best player on the team gives little to no effort on a critical possession, LA will continue to lose games to teams that they shouldn’t lose to and get blown out by the good teams.

  • pposse

This would not be happening to the lakers if wade was on that team instead of kobe. With that being said, i highly doubt lebron would ever want to play with kobe, dude’s ego is just ridiculously out of control this past year

  • http://twitter.com/sooperfadeaway nbk

yes it does. i should have said top 4 though, i just don’t have that much faith in Memphis, but they should be in that group.

  • bill

Well, then keep up the good work! It seems to bear results. 10 more turnovers should do it.

  • http://twitter.com/sooperfadeaway nbk

    stop noticing things.

  • http://twitter.com/sooperfadeaway nbk

well in 2005, Joe Johnson broke his face. 2006 Amar’e was out with Microfracture Surgery. 2007, Amar’e and Diaw got suspended before a pivotal game.
those being the excuses people often cite.
the reason i give? Amar’e Stoudemire was our rim protector, and Steve Nash was our ball stopper. — Neither are good at that job, scratch that, neither are even bad at that job, they are horrendously horrible.
The Lakers have Dwight, so given enough time, i think they will be a title contender.

  • http://twitter.com/sooperfadeaway nbk

i like that everyone is jumping on the Kobe scores a bunch in losses stat, after i had to show that off during the first 3 weeks of the season while everyone was proclaiming Kobe to be back in his prime. people are cute.

That Lobe should have learned by now.

  • http://www.facebook.com/people/Junior-Taylor/100003121138419 Junior Taylor

    HA. I can’t help it. it’s like a disease.

  • Caboose

    Welcome to sports media.

  • http://www.basesandbaskets.com/ Elijah

It’s plain embarrasing for the future Hall of Famer. I’m not a Kobe fan but I can admit he deserves better than what he’s getting from a roster of (overpaid) stars.

  • jeff nwagbo

Kobe let Cj miles drop 28 on him. CJ fucking miles. The guy who averages 8 ppg on 37% shooting(both are inflated by last night) and has started 1 game all season.

  • http://www.facebook.com/people/Junior-Taylor/100003121138419 Junior Taylor

So…Howard goes from the best center in the NBA to overpaid/overrated overnight? Come on now. What other superstar perimeter player in the NBA today gets to play with a great center?

  • LakeShow

How many great centers are there?
    2? 3?
Brook Lopez and Howard maybe Marc Gasol?
So 3 wing players get to play with great centers, is the answer to that question.

  • http://www.facebook.com/people/Junior-Taylor/100003121138419 Junior Taylor

What part of “superstar” don’t you get?

  • http://www.facebook.com/people/Mike-Gilbert/100001749589586 Mike Gilbert

there defense is so bad right now….it’s at the point of embarrassing

The Lakers are 1-10 when Kobe scores over 30 points this season

    His free throws are ugly…

    LOL they would!!!

  • http://twitter.com/Jzakoni Sanchez

    Has he? Smh mr buss

  • http://www.facebook.com/francis.aboy Francis Aboy

Everything changed after they moved a bunch of players after they won in 2010 to make a more defensive team. The sweep in Dallas really fucked up the flow. The sweep in OKC made the Show PANIC. Fish, Odom, Bynum, Vujacic, Farmar, Walton, and Phil all secretly smirk seeing the ship go down in flames.

  • http://twitter.com/sooperfadeaway nbk

well other then Kupchak having the ideas yeah. And the Mike D’Antoni hiring was Dr. Buss, not Jim Buss, as Magic Johnson so inaccurately (status quo) criticized.

  • http://twitter.com/sooperfadeaway nbk

which is why i don’t work in the field.

  • http://twitter.com/sooperfadeaway nbk

    is better? no.
    can be better? yes.

  • http://twitter.com/sooperfadeaway nbk

Brooklyn can’t acquire him via anything but trade.

  • http://twitter.com/sooperfadeaway nbk

and it’s still better then it was in Mike Brown’s 5 games this season.

  • pposse

if the lakers don’t pull off any ten game winning streaks this season, then that team completely underachieved in the regular season.

  • LakeShow

You don’t think Deron Williams and JJ are super stars?

    And Rudy Gay neither?

They are all super stars from my perspective.

  • http://www.facebook.com/people/Junior-Taylor/100003121138419 Junior Taylor

DWill has the reputation of a superstar but his numbers (ever since he left Utah) tell a different story. JJ has never been a superstar (not even close to one). RGay, really? In my opinion, they are about 5-6 true superstars in the game today

  • https://twitter.com/jasontichenor Mr. Wet

I think with the right players, its a fun offense that can win games. I’m not sure it’s an offense that can with many playoff series though. At least with the players the suns ran with. I think the Lakers will have to modify the offense a bit to make it gel right with the guys they have. But, they should be a legit team. Despite how they make it to the playoffs, I don’t think any team will be excited about the matchup against them.

  • http://twitter.com/sooperfadeaway nbk

the only place where Williams doesn’t look like a superstar is his shooting %. which makes me think his wrist injury really stripped him of either strength or flexibility.

  • The Philosopher

I just KNEW… that he was going to flash his customary “jaw-jut”.

  • jmd

oh my,so long as the lakers bench won’t improve, l.a. is in deep trouble, kobe and dwight are the only consistent players for this team, the rest is just fluctuating, oh wait, even dwight is on and off.

  • Bored

Blatche, Brooks and C.J Watson and future draft picks? i dont know what contracts they are on. just a guess

  • LLC#12

That is a terrible reply. Irrespective of his god-awful, wince-inspiring, rim-damaging free throw shooting, he is still a great center.

  • TBRK

completely random thought I’ve been thinking for the past few years, Kobe has to be one of the best orators of any athlete in the world….dude sounds like an author or a journalist some times, you can tell he’s very well read….

  • shockexchange

That team was “exceptionally more talented than the rest of the L.” They panicked after the sweep in Dallas. They didn’t to trade anybody. All they had to do was tell Horry Jr to stop trying to be “the man” and pound the ball inside to the bigs.

  • RunNGun

Halle Berry please… with whip cream and cherries on top.

  • RunNGun

Last I checked, basketball was a team game…
