Kobe Bryant Says He’d Have Smacked Abusive Coach Mike Rice (VIDEO)

“You can’t take that form of abuse.”

Much like Ray Allen and several other NBA players have said, Kobe Bryant claims that he would’ve resorted to violence had former Rutgers University coach Mike Rice physically abused him.

Sprewell laid hands on an abusive coach and look how that turned out.

  • LLC#12

I can’t help but feel if a college player had punched the coach, that would effectively be their career over, unfortunately.

  • AJ

yea he went on to be an all star and make the nba finals……what’s your point?

  • NO.

i think he meant that the players should have hit mike rice because Sprewell turned out fine.

  • Redd

As long as Chris Childs isn’t there.

  • Bruce Wayne

True, unfortunately a lot of people would probably crucify the kid without even knowing the whole story.

This type of stuff happens a lot more than people realize..maybe not so much with constant physical threats, but MANY coaches out there make a practice of berating and verbally bullying guys, and there IS a difference between good coaching/discipline, and abuse.

    and Reggie Miller…

  • shockexchange

He was made a pariah by the media, branded a “malcontent,” a thug and nearly blackballed from the league. Meanwhile, the abusive coach still has a job and people pretend like he was the victim.

    I don’t

Who was the last person Kobe smacked?

  • LakeShow

Smacked? Like a slap? On the court? I don’t think he ever has.
He’s a professional basketball player after all.

  • Conor

Initially, but they would be exonerated after appeals and witnesses from the team and past teams if there was any justice.

  • Conor

“… past teams stood forth and support him/her…”

  • Conor

    WOW, sorry.

    *supported

The power these coaches have (and the NCAA) is just too big and goes beyond the simple coach/player relationship.Players have no leverage against this institution and such persons.C.R.E.A.M. is the defining rule.Until you pay the players, nothing will change.

  • latrell sprewell

    Beautifully put, russian guy.

Who consistently talks about smacking people.

Kobe elbowed the most feared player in the chest Artest. Kobe has went after Reggie. tired to kill MJ on the court and physically fought Shaq. You think a cream pup coach is going to throw balls at him and call him a female dog. I would have hit the coach too and I am a nice guy with a shady past.

Exactly….I have no problem with what he said but Kobe has to stop with the tough guy act. We don’t believe you…..you need more people

  • shockexchange

    That’s a “brainteaser.”

  • robb

Rome doesn’t like violence. It reminds him when Jim Everett tried to bust his @ss on TV.
    boy was that was fun…

  • LakeShow

    Chris Everett? lol

  • LakeShow

    Your point?

He “acts” tough because he’s top 10 All time NBA player who has had the toughest defenders and bad boys try to defend him for 17 years in the L to no avail.

He “acts” tough because it’s well documented that he has a unusual pain tolerance and has played through maybe debilitating injuries before.

He “acts” tough because he’s a 6’6″ incredibly fit dude who has incredible foot work.

    I don’t think he’s scared of a whole lot.

    I don’t think he’s acting…

  • robb

lol it’s on youtube you should check it out,

  • chyea

People who really have it in them typically won’t boast about it. Kobe’s a tough cat, but he’s not a fighter. There aren’t too many in the NBA anyway.

  • LP

what about Jim Rome’s career …..what, is he on random stations now??

  • http://twitter.com/BEdotwater Orlando Coolridge

Jim Rome is rich. His career is A-ok.

  • Tre

    Kobe’s a funny dude. I remember Chris Child’s giving him a nice 2-piece combo back in 2000…

  • Redd

“i am a nice guy with a shady past”

well someone is full of himself and lame.

  • pposse

he was blackballed/ viewed as a malcontent by the league when he turned down somethin like a 21 million dollar deal over 3 yrs cause “he has family to feed”

  • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=100003246310246 Jason Carter

Why is Rome asking if Kobe’ mom ever beat him with a belt? what, hes gunna try to get her in trouble or something decades later?

  • speedy

Everybody who is a grown man would have told this dude to shut the f up and teach ball and maybe would have hit him.
But these young guys are far from home for the first time in their lives and they think, that this older person knows whats good for them and their development, so they take the abuse and think it’s about being tough.
So the older Kobe would have set this guy some limits but the younger one at age 18-19 wouldn’t have I think.

  • bike

There has always been a bully atmosphere in sports at all levels. The narrative is that you are supposed to be tough, suck it up, and take it like a man. Those Rutgers kids knew dam well if they retaliated, their scholarships would be revoked and/or they would sit for the rest of the season.

Kobe never played in college so it’s easy for him to say that. However, no pro coach would live to see another day if he went off like that on nba dudes.

  • shockexchange

pposse you’ve just outshocked the Shock Exchange. Don’t do again.

  • LP

Money doesn’t make you rich, young man.

  • http://twitter.com/BEdotwater Orlando Coolridge

I’m 26. Trust me I know that, but monetarily, I’m sure Rome has no issues.
