Does Kevin Durant Hate Money?

Plus: Darko in Memphis.

by Marcel Mutoni

-Please, someone, explain this one to me: Kevin Durant took a $60 million deal from Nike with a $10 million signing bonus. However, he reportedly turned down a $70 million deal with a $12 million signing bonus from adidas. How does one do that exactly? I’m getting upset just thinking about it.

-Meanwhile, people in Seattle continue to hate the Sonics’ owners.

-Udonis Haslem thinks the Heat will be juuuuust fine.

“People still forget two years ago this was a championship team,” Haslem said. “Make no mistake about it, you’re only as good as your last performance. We really didn’t perform well down the stretch.”

“The talent is still here. The skill level is still here. The hunger is still here. We’ve just got to maintain our focus, come in ready and everybody at 100 percent and we’ll be fine.”

(The drugs in Miami must be amazing. I need to go there.)

-Darko likes his chances in Memphis.

“I’m on a team that wants to run, and I want to run and I’m glad to be here,” said Milicic.

“I was the second pick (in the 2003 NBA draft) but I never got to show what I can do and to play the game I can play,” he said, calling his three years in Detroit “like a nightmare to me.”

(Darko, it was like a nightmare for the rest of us, too.)

    Darko’s game is a nightmare

  • http://yahoo.com DP

I can’t wait to see Darko get his butt beat down in Memphis. I just don’t see him doing anything special while Pau is still there. Memphis will still probably be the worst team in the L again this year. But what I do know is that Mike Conley will start as soon as he gets there and will be an immediate factor for Memphis’ success. play wit it.

Clay Bennett is doing everything possible to make this city hate the business of the NBA and it’s slimy owners. Makes it easier for the Sonics to leave if we are so sick of the guy that the people say good riddance. I think the comment should be that “the Sonics’ owners continue to hate Seattle”

  • AJ$

Darko=da only guy whoz xcited 2 go 2 memphis

  • RV

Adidas sucks, thats why, i think eventually he’ll make more money off of other endorsements simply by being a nike guy

  • Tallon

DP…Kyle Lowry > Mike Conley. Play with that.

  • Kracka

Durant gonna have more money than he can spend in a lifetime. 10 mill is chump change to him soon enough.

  • lild07

    KD just likes nike more

  • Vahid

He picked Nike because he’s had ties to them for a long time. It was a loyalty move, and he should be commended for it.

Credit Nike for creating a brand and image that can overcome $12 million extra dollars.

im just waiting for the sonics to move to kansas city

  • maddskizzle

i’d pick nike too.. adidas ball shoes are pretty wack.. noone rocks the garnetts, TD’s, billups or any of that… only the gil zeros and tmacs have some appeal but they’re not even that nice

nike all the way! good move KD

  • Blue

    Anyone remember Reebok?

    british knights?

  • Steve O

The state of CT will gladly take on any NBA franchise and probably remove a whole town from existence to build a new arena. Ever since the loss of the beloved Whalers I have dreamed for the day I could have a pro sports team of my own. No offense to the Connectict Sun but you just don’t do it for me. Connecticut SuperSonics???

  • http://breadcity.wordpress.com Jake

I hear Durant has been friends with some people at Nike since he was a kid, and that Nike was on board with creating some kind of cheaper Durant model, a la Starbury, that cost only like 50 or 60 bucks. Plus, what would be the difference between 60 and 70 million to you Marcel? What couldn’t you buy?

  • steve smith

That’s why Nike sponsors AAU teams and fits them with their gear. It pays off when these kids reach the NBA.

10 million more teases at the strip club…

    SWOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOSHHHHHHHHHH!!!Gotta respect Kevin Durant…Less Money,Less Problems…Right?

  • http://myspace.com/bonafideballa21 Michell

well it’s obvious why KD picked Nike. either way he’ll be filthy, stinkin rich, and NIKE makes better shoes.
lol to the people who said reebok and british knights.

    L.A. Gear

  • Chukaz

Can someone give me to phone number of the owner of the Sonics. If he want to move to another city, he can move to El Paso. It’s a really nice city. I think El Paso is the second biggest city without a pro-sports team (the other one is Austin).

Lame move by Nike for not matching Adidas offer for the kid who stays loyal to them.

  • Mo Charlo

Austin has several pro sports teams. If you don’t think the University of Texas doesn’t pull some strings and do some shady stuff, you don’t know UT alumni (Vince Young drove an Escalade at school). Furthermore, they have the Austin Toros, the ex-team of Flight White, and current team of Jay Williams and Brad Buckman. If the Sonics go anywhere, they’re going to Oklahomo City. Greg Oden will sign with L.A. Gear.

Mo, would that also make St Vincent St marys highschool a professional sports team, because LBJ drove a Hummer to school?

  • http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xyNMz_LxEoA Boing Dynasty

Tallon, maybe Kyle Lowry > Mike Conley, but Damon Stoudamire will be the starter anyway.

  • necey

i think he did what was best 4 hi and what mad him happy but dose he hate money no he only turned down likke 82 million but he is a great player and he will mack much more money then soon so no he dose not yhate money he just went with what he liked insted of what pays more and i respect that.

  • http://www.mrc-cbu.cam.ac.uk/ RedRum

Greg Oden will sign with Fila. Anyone remember them? I still rock their Grand Hill model from time to time. awesome shoe!

  • Yaro

I hope his signsture kick comes in other colors… and not just green and yellow.

  • whooo!

i guess durant figured he couldn’t be part of the five. it’d be nice to see someone else than melo having signature jordan’s though, but i guess durant would make it redundant. n i find it funny that nike sure as hell musta done some nice stuff for kd as a h.s. kid to make him “loyal”, but lebron got suspended for gettin a free jersey?!

  • Chief

who cares, Durnat won’t be a good NBa player for three years. he isn’t gonan quick fix the sonics at all. Maybe they shoulda got someone to completement Allen’s already stellar game. Just my opinion.

  • John from Miami

Kevin Durant is a Nationalist, he took Nike instead of Adidas because Nike is an American brand. That’s the only reason I can come up with. :S

  • http://backcourtink.blogspot.com bootlace

Choosing between $60 million and $70 million is like choosing between 60 million Whopper’s or 70 million Big Mac’s – you’re getting more than you can consume either way, might as well go for what you prefer.

  • pascal (france)

Nike can already create a ‘skinny’ shoe, even for 50 bucks, the real benefit goes to KD who can now concentrate on his game, he won’t play bared foot anyway, this story is just wack, we want him to play!

  • A-Money

Anytime Adidas wants to spend that left over money from Durant…I’ll be here.

  • doctaj

i love kevin durant. i HATE nike. dont get me wrong, i love the shoes, but damn, nike has EVERYBODY. geez kd. im signin with adidas.

  • P-MAC

yeah didnt Allen Iverson sign with Reebok? lol

  • baker’s dozen (12-13)

Milicic will be in a good situation in Memphis.

If he comes around, they could trade Pau for a few players and turn this into a positive.

Remember, Milicic is still very young. He’ll never be great, but he’ll be a very solid player…I’m thinking 12 ppg and 8 rpb.

  • Dblizzy!

Personally, I like adidas shoes for basketball. yeah Nike has better designs, but that doesn’t make the shoes comfortable.

  • irvbx

    nike>adidas nuff said

  • valowrider

adidas sucks, i would take less money to wear nikes anyday.

  • future#1pick

dude nobody from nike has ever dominated the league except for hibachi or tim duncan. kevins gonna tear up the league just like lebron did his first season.
