The Perfect Storm

It Really Can’t Get Any Worse Than This

By Khalid Salaam

Let me just say that this whole situation is awesome. And I’m not talking about Lindsay Lohan either (although if I could get my hands on a “Free Lindsay” shirt I’d rock it. So what if she throws her career away. Let her live. Who even has seen any of her movies? She’s young, loose and high. That’s how Hollywood starlets get down right? Lindsay, when they try to put you in rehab say NO! NO! NO!)
When I say situation I mean Barry Bonds and his steroid allegations, the NBA and the referee/gambling allegations and Mike Vick’s dogfighting fiasco. The timing of this is just too amazing. It’s the perfect storm of sports related nonsense.

I consider myself a big sports fan. Not just the major team sports either, all jokes aside I love gymnastics. I admit that I can’t just rattle off a bunch of names but I generally watch gymnastics whenever it’s on television. Sports for me has always been exciting because of the competition and my fascination at those who could extend the excepted parameters of human physical ability. People who didn’t like sports I always sorta dismissed them with a you don’t know what you’re missing shoulder shrug.

These days those that don’t care about sports, care about it less. Or they hate it and everything they think it represents. In the past I could have just accused them of just hatin’ but now they have their points.

First I love dogs. Didn’t always but I’m now officially a dog person. My ex has a Pit bull named Raquel and she’s pretty much the happiest, most loving dog you could ever ask for. A truck hit her when she was pup so she has some anxiety issues. She’ll relate if your friendly but she gets nervous around strangers so worrying about her biting you is pretty much an obsolete issue. However she bullies other dogs and as I mentioned last week I’ve had to break up a couple of her fights. But 99 percent of the time she’s great. So watching footage of dogs fighting and bleeding and being tortured makes me sick. So this whole thing with Vick annoys me to no avail. Whether it’s him or his peoples the situations that are being described are barbaric and sad. Although I must add that PETA needs to protest those whom hunt and the gaming commissions that support them with the same energy. And the Feds love this if only to divert attention away from the ineptitude of Alberto Gonzales and the BS going in the Justice Dept. For their PR purposes this is as good as it gets.

The ref situation we all know is terrible. This has the potential to really harm the NBA. Because at the end of the day nobody is gonna support something obviously fake and dishonest. The casual sports fan halfway has never had more reason to hate the NBA than right now. The real sports fan has never had a better reason. For those of us whose livelihood is affected by this we especially have never had more reason to hate the NBA. Downplay it all you want but this is a big deal. He could have just bet with a bookie but by getting himself involved with the Mafia this whole thing will become legendary.

And regarding Bonds, just go ahead and make it happen. I don’t care anymore. I’m just amped that Manny Ramirez is finally heating up.

You forgot all the doping business in the Tour de France—including the race leader getting fired by HIS OWN TEAM after the 16th stage (this after he was told not to show up for the national team, either). Nope, not the best month for pro athletes.

    Manny! Manny! Manny!

  • http://slamonline.com Sam Rubenstein

“all jokes aside I love gymnastics.” That was unexpected.

Just to throw this out there too, The Miami Dolphins now have the highest arrest rate for players on a single team in the NFL. It’s like they took up the mantle of the 80′s Hurricane teams.

The Tour de Drugs is crazy right now with most of the teams not competing and refusing to start the race, but its not much of a surprise, cycling hasn’t been credible in years.
Theres also things going on in soccer with the Carlos Tevez affair and in Formula 1 with allegations of spying(not that anyone cares)

Khalid, it’s cool to like Gymnastics. We all know Dominique Dawes is a dime, and Kerri Strug is as much a gamer as Curt Schilling. But unless it’s the Olympics, gymnastics should be totally off limits for any real sports fan.

  • orteezy

maybe the spurs knew horry was gonna knock over nash… its all a conspiracy… all of the spurs should be banned from the leauge and striken from the record books…and whats up with their coyote mascot with the crazy green eyes…do they have peyote in san antonio

  • Nadav

Beckahm in LA isn’t getting too much hype after all…talk about stories unrelated to sports.

  • http://www.slamonline.com Khalid Salaam

Not true ron. those gymnats are awesome and in better shape than me or u

Aww, look at my precious! That face is classic. Raquel is the best dog ever. Forget that she is a ‘Pitbull.’ I’ve known plenty of Pits and they are very gentle animals. Very loyal and trustworthy. I mean, if you treat and animal (or person for that matter) bad, they will flip. My Mom had a vicious 7lb Maltese that would lock-jaw on you if you got too close to her. Granted I did tease the dog so I had it coming a few times. But you don’t see people fighting little fluffy dogs, now do you. Just the muscle bound dogs. Now think about it, what kind of dog was Kujo? Not a Pit. And what type of dogs do the police use? Not Pits. Everyone in the hood had a German Shepherd in their neighborhood named ‘King’ and if he got loose, you ran like hell. So don’t knock Pits. Vick on the other hand… Hot mess! That’s all I can say, just a plain hot stankin mess!

Hey, you know what? I don’t really get the doping thing. Isn’t it just the nature of competitive sports to look for ways to gain an edge over your competitors? If an athlete is diabetic (like Morrison) and shoots insulin is that doping? Or say an athlete has knee pain and takes anti-inflamatories and performs better when his knee’s not the size of a baloon. Is he doping? Is than an “unfair” advantage? I know baseball is up in arms about synthetic testosterone and HGH, but isn’t that a slippery slope? All of the above mentioned pharmaceuticals give a particular “edge” to the athlete taking them, right? I don’t know, I’ve always been a bit ambivalent about the whole doping thing.

“Let her live.” Khalid: i truly hope you, Lohan, and Ping Ping get to karaoke “Can I Live?” together at Hangar 19. Perhaps Ping Ping can demonstrate the dismount.

You see me stressed right? Did anyone see that ANOTHER dog hit a rider today? The tour is worse for canines than Vick. Can they live?

  • http://coco-vents.blogspot.com Co Co

NO! No! No! Priceless Khalid! The rehab obviously doesn’t work for Lindsay anyway. She’s been in there a million times!

  • http://why-bother-reading.blogspot.com/ H to the izzo

Cheryl:Doping in sport is generally used to give the person who is taking it an unfair advantage over the competition, like steroids,Hgh and testosterone.Unless you count not dying an unfair advantage I don’t think can count Morrison’s insuline as doping. The ironic thing in the Tour de France is that it is pretty much a level playing field since everyone is doping in some form,so the whole concept of taking them is pretty pointless for cyclists

  • Allenp

Khalid, you do know that Lindsay blamed her arrest on the random black dude in the car, right?

  • Allenp

What’s amazing is that despite all the doping stuff flying around in cycling none of it seemed to stick on Lance ARmstrong. That’s what is amazing.

  • http://myspace.com/bodiebarnett jbn74sb

At some point within the next 20-30 years, many of us will be taking steroids and HGH under a doctor’s supervision. Somehow, McDonald’s, cigarettes, booze, and a whole slew of prescription meds are legal and heavily marketed, yet drugs that increase your lean muscle mass, help you recover from injury and training faster, and make you look better are so frowned upon that we can’t even do enough research to determine at what level (if any) they can be safely used by a large portion of the population.

  • http://myspace.com/bodiebarnett jbn74sb

In cycling circles, it is as accepted that Lance used performance enhancing drugs as it is in mainstream America that Barry Bonds did. Whenever I see sheep wearing those idiotic yellow bracelets, I ask them if they realize they are supporting the use of said drugs. I often get a dumbfounded stare in return…

  • http://myspace.com/bodiebarnett jbn74sb

All these comments, and not a Ryan Jones in sight.

  • http://why-bother-reading.blogspot.com/ H to the izzo

I love the fact that people except that fact that doping is commonplace in cycling yet they trust that a 7time champion has beaten people who are a step ahead of him because of the drugs.Blind naiivity

Dear Mr. Salaam: Tell me you watched CNN’s disgusting “killer dogs” segment last night, with the horrendous interview with Jason Whitlock. I watched it, got really, really pissed, and spent the entire night writing about it(link above).

Lindsay Lohan, Britney Spears, Pam Anderson, and Paris Hilton should hook up and make a sex tape. Yeah, that’ve dope.

To be honest, Im not too sad to loose casual sports fans. Its because of these sports fan, and Stern wanting to please them that the NBA has become such a joke these days. Get back the old hardcore NBA where Jordan Rules, flagrant fouls, fights, tears, and legends were just another day in the NBA.

  • http://nothinpersonal8.blogspot.com/ nothin _personal

I don’t care of pro athletes dying of Drugs (matter of speaking), they are adults, and they can make decision for themselves. (hate it when coaches push the drugs and exyort players into taking them). It’s, imo, the same if a doctor is prescribing antiifflammatories that are gonna make the player play, but are gonna make him need a cane to walk after 40, or if he gives him blood transfusions. I don’t even care about the unfair edge, it’s not nice, but I think it’s your choice, an easy way to get ritch, with alot to loose (even if you are not caught). The only thing that really bothers me, it’s the kids, that take up sports and have those guys as their idols. They can be pushed into drugs, just like that, “Bonds is taking them, and look where it got him, why not me?”. Tht’s why those guys ought to be hunted down. I believe in “no second chance policy” in this, ban them for life. And I won’t even get into parents pushing their children into this, thinking that they are doing them a favor…
P.sSorry for the rant, it’s that I want to be a sports doctor, and those stuff disgust me…

  • http://nothinpersonal8.blogspot.com/ nothin _personal

2 more things: I didn’t care about all the doping stuff the past two years until Rassmussen got the boot. It’s stupid that we won’t have a wiinner for a second consecutive years, and that a guy that everybody knew was doping, was pretty much untouchable, and they let him get away with it 7 YEARS IN A ROW. Even when they proved tit, they just discredited the laboratory, and he found a loophole out. Plus, it always seem to favor the American team. Glad the cold war is over, and if we can’t see clean sports, we can atleast see parity in doping.

  • http://nothinpersonal8.blogspot.com/ nothin _personal

@nd thing is, Jasen, Steroids are CRAZY dangerous. A doctor won’t give them unless he absolutely has to, and then he’ll try keep the dose as low as possible. They hurt your hurt, bones, eyes, lungs, kidneys, and genitals. You name it, they kill it. They immunosupress you for gods sake. It’s absolutely insane. Take cocaine instead, it could actually be safer. We could have doctors at sidelines and defibrilate you when you got a heart attack, the rest of the sideffects aren’t that serious. Maybe we could expiriment with that!
P.s. You want to look good, work out and eat healthy, don’t go kill yourself…

  • arthur

nothinpersonal is right, the reason these drugs are forbidden is because they are seriously hazardous to any athlete’s health. look at marco pantani, he died of a heart attack only a few years after winning the Tour.(wikipedia says it was a cocaine overdose, but that’s bullsh*t)

  • http://www.friendster.com/sesa Sesa

Khalid, why are you sticking around your ex that often? Even putting her in a column…

  • B. Lee

Sesa and Ghost, ya’ll trying to get in his business? Everyone has dealt with personal ish in their lives. Don’t judge.

  • http://www.slamonline.com Khalid Salaam

Well sesa, if you must know i still tremendously love my Ex. Relationships are hard sometimes but i stil hope to marry her one day. Thats why.

  • http://www.friendster.com/sesa Sesa

Well said Khalid. Even I don’t have the guts to admit that I still loved my EXs.

  • http://www.slamonline.com Khalid Salaam

Well sesa, you can’t live your life in fear. esp when it comes to relationships. Life is short and you only get a few chances to really find someone you click with. Can’t be out there d*cking your life away. At some point you have to take a chance or two. even if you and that person have problems, at the end of the day if the person you care about is really worth it, you will do extra ish for them. a lot of times men get caught up with some macho bs and try to act all hard and non-emotional when it comes to women. that ish is for the birds. Life is not a game, therefore you treat it with the respect it deserves.

  • http://idunkonthem.blogspot.com/ albie1kenobi

much, much respect and power to you, Khalid.

  • http://Slamonline.com Omar

I’m in the hood so i know about dog fights all too well. I’m a dog lover so naturally i hate the sport. Even more i hate the heartless fools who “terminate” the losing dog. Talk about the Geneva Convention. Vick and everyone like him should be prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law. Stick a spark plug up his ass and let’s see how much he likes it.

  • http://coco-vents.blogspot.com Co Co

Khalid I admire your willingness to share your feelings about your Ex. We’ve all had those feelings once or twice. Maybe it will pass maybe it won’t, either way I hope life works out for you. I really do! And all of you other men stuntin tryna be all hard, if you want it you better say it!

  • whistler

Russ, what’s even worse about the tour de France is that Vinokourov had CREATED his own team. And that team he had built fired him!! (called Astana for his country’s capital city).

  • joe_x

People who don’t understand PETA, I always sorta dismissed them with a “you don’t know what you’re missing” shoulder shrug.

  • Aussie Pride

Khalid, i hung round my ex for too long and she got me expelled while i was doing my final year at school. They are more trouble than they are worth… having said that, it takes a real man 2 admit his love, much respect

  • SA

All due respect to you Khalid, but Mean Girls was the truth.
