Andrew Bynum update: He wants $80 Mill

By Sam Rubenstein

I’m sick of looking at the NBA Draft Live Blog photo. You get this here now.

Andrew Bynum recently said he wouldn’t mind taking less money. It turns out his agent knows Andrew better than Andrew knows himself. And Andrew wants $80 million over 5 years.

Bynum can get a contract extension this summer from the Lakers. When his agent was told that Bynum suggested he would be willing to take less than the maximum of five years, $80 million, David Lee said they would be seeking the maximum.

“He was talking as a 20-year-old,” Lee said in a telephone interview Monday. “He had not consulted with his representatives. I think the Lakers know how we feel about this.”

“I don’t think the Lakers have anything to worry about with Andrew’s physical condition,” Lee said. “The only thing is he wants to stay in the purple and gold. It’s in their court.”

Okay then. Yes his agent is David Lee. “Talking as a 20-year old.” Good one.

actually most fans have knee-jerk reactions, lakers fans are just more skillful at it.

Let me ask a ? how many other true centers are there in the league not many I don’t believe he deserves that much but he does deserve at least 10 mil

  • http://hibachi20.blogspot.com/ RV

all i know is SOMEONE on that starting 5 is going to be ridiculously overpaid if they do extend him. Pau already makes 16 mil with 3 yrs left, odom makes 14 with 1 yr left, and Bynum has to be re-signed in 2 yrs. They better win it all next year because that may be the last time they’re all together.

Dr. Buss and Lakers-fans will eventually know what David Lee’s ass tastes like. Count on it.

  • drewstar

    if buss doesnt pay him..

    im sure otis smith will.

  • B. Long

If he drops 20 and 10 with 2.5 blocks next year(Dwight Howard Numbers) I have no problem giving him this NEXT summer, but right now? HELLSNAW!!!

Bynum = Top 5 center in the NBA. If kobe wants another ring, the Lakers will keep Andrew and pay him what he should get. I am sure their are a helluva lot of team that would like Andrew’s services.

  • B. Long

@BETCATS: If he’s healthy, your exactly right, but he still needs to prove himself for an entire season and in the playoffs before we hand him 80 mill.

  • Captain America

chump change for a limp chump

B Long: Imagine a perfect world for you Laker fans; gasol at the PF, his true postion while Bynum hammers it down at C, Odom does the dirty work at SF, Kobe is Kobe Bean Bryant at SG, and Derek Fisher(man) catches some open looks for more threes. Thats a dyNASTY team

BET: there’s not way they keep odom if bynum gets his 80 mil, the starting five would make about 77 mil, the TEAM payroll was 75… Kobe’s gonna wish he was traded to a perfect world

  • Joey E.

they’re not gonna give it to him now. maybe midway through the season

  • The Answer

80 Mil for a decent HALF year? Lakers are insane if they give him that.

I personally would go looking for healthy players…you but thats just me.

  • maik

somebody ask this david lee guy what bynum did to get a maximum deal now. i mean the guy has tremdnous talent, but maximum deals are for proven guys.bynum MAYBE be a guy to get a deal like that after his next deal will be over in 5 years.then again how many overpaid big mean are there in the league today??? thats right, way too many.

Does Andrew Bynum really deserve the same contract as Dwight Howard? Really?

  • maik

russ, its the same answer to the question like is kobe bryant as good as michael jordan? even though i like kobe.

  • Hoop Swami

Bynum at the max? It shouldn’t happen, he’s not man enough yet and if he is, you have to earn it.
I think Artest would be a good Laker, drop Lamar like an anchor. The Lakers are weak defenders, I’m surprised how far they got this year.

Should be getting something more in line with Chris Kaman (5 years, $52.5 million two years ago), since he’s the most comparable player numbers-wise. Bynum’s 11th among all NBA centers in scoring, ninth in rebounding. How does that make him a top 5 center?

  • will

Kaman gets $52.5 million for 5 years?!

  • will

What do you do with $16 mil a year? And what about guys who work all day and don’t even get close to a fraction of that. NBA players should be happy that they get to do what they love for their job, and get about $200,000 a year. And if they don’t want it, I’m quite happy to take their place.

  • http://slamonline.com Russ Bengtson

I think you could give Bynum more than Kaman, but more than $65 million would be kind of insane. Let him average 20/10 for a full season on that repaired hinge before anyone starts throwing around the “m” word.

  • trick

    first…. oh, wait…..

  • Cameron

i hate how agents say a player wants this much but the player wants less it pisses me off like with varejo last year with the cavs. biggest bull ever.

  • Mr. 416

If you want 20 mill don’t ask for 20 mill ask for 80 mill and settle on 30 mill over five seasons

  • Maluza

Play 80 mill then get paid 80 mill..agent tryin to get deal out of it aint this a b****!
