Andrew Bynum update: He wants $80 Mill

By Sam Rubenstein

I’m sick of looking at the NBA Draft Live Blog photo. You get this here now.

Andrew Bynum recently said he wouldn’t mind taking less money. It turns out his agent knows Andrew better than Andrew knows himself. And Andrew wants $80 million over 5 years.

Bynum can get a contract extension this summer from the Lakers. When his agent was told that Bynum suggested he would be willing to take less than the maximum of five years, $80 million, David Lee said they would be seeking the maximum.

“He was talking as a 20-year-old,” Lee said in a telephone interview Monday. “He had not consulted with his representatives. I think the Lakers know how we feel about this.”

“I don’t think the Lakers have anything to worry about with Andrew’s physical condition,” Lee said. “The only thing is he wants to stay in the purple and gold. It’s in their court.”

Okay then. Yes his agent is David Lee. “Talking as a 20-year old.” Good one.

    OH HELL NO

  • http://fjkdlzf.com Jukai

David Lee had to take a side job? Wow, does playing with the NYKs really offer that little money?

  • Chris

Wow just wow…I wouldn’t pay him that until he’s proven he’s healthy.

  • http://www.clutchfans.net Nick

“He was talking as a guy who cares more about a good team situation and a chance to compete then stacking paper to the ceiling,” Lee said in a phone interview. “He’s only 20, after all.”

  • iLL wiLL

This is why we got so much love for DLee. Not only is he a great basketball player, but he represents other players too in their contract negotiations. Plus, he’s managed to keep his side hustle under the table for so long.

  • namik

    F**K THAT…

  • http://jaredmintzisthetruth.blogspot.com Jared

  • http://hibachi20.blogspot.com/ RV

ha ha….that’s exactly what I was talking about when i said this guy wasn’t going to become a star with the Laker’s current roster, he wants the star $$ though and know everyone’s gonna start saying he doesn’t deserve it because he won’t be putting up max numbers.

  • http://hibachi20.blogspot.com/ RV

why does david lee only have 2 players and both are with the lakers ?

  • http://coco-vents.blogspot.com Co Co

    Can’t hurt to ask.

Be sure to keep Kobe away from mall parking lots.

  • namik

A hurt player asking for a lot of money before anyone has seen him play. Ominous signs…EB is still open right?

  • B_Easy24

This guys wants 80 million?!!!!1 Come on lets be realistic here, the guy did’nt make much contributions to the lakers and he wants that much money?? not even star players get that amount of money, not even rasheed wallace got that kind of money and he’s a better player than bynum

  • http://www.slamonline.com Ryan Jones

    HAHAHAHHAHAHAHAHAHHAHA.
    ha.
In fairness, dude played GREAT for three months last season. Go Lakers!

  • http://www.slamonline.com Ryan Jones

    Andrew,
Tell me how my @ss tastes.
    Sincerely,
    Dr. Jerry Buss

  • http://www.slamonline.com Ryan Jones

    Dear Dr. Buss,
I’m guessing it doesn’t taste like Quiznos. Pay me, b*tch!
    Peace,
    Andy

  • ber

LOL@Ryan…I don’t know why all of these guys think they can get max contracts.

  • http://www.slamonline.com Ryan Jones

I can keep going if you guys want.

  • http://shawn-kemps-offspring.blogspot.com/ H to the izzo

    ber:Mainly because they can.

  • John E. Sanford

Hell, why not ask for the max. Obviously he’s not going to get that much, but this is the same league where Nene got 60 mil/6 years after returning from a knee injury, right? I’m just saying.

  • http://shawn-kemps-offspring.blogspot.com/ H to the izzo

    Ryan:Please do,the site’s been dead.The news of Sam’s departure has shook everyone.

  • http://coco-vents.blogspot.com Co Co

They think they can get max contracts because guys with bum knees are getting max contracts and second best players on mediocre teams are getting big contracts. It can’t hurt to ask though.

  • http://idunkonthem.blogspot.com/ albie1kenobi

    HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA. i’m LOVING this.
where are the people who said “wait til Bynum is back”?
and Prof. Jones, please continue. (btw, do you have anything to do with the Dr Jones who cracks a whip in his spare time?)

  • http://www.slamonline.com Ryan Jones

This site should be dead, izzo. It’s July first. If we had any sense, we’d lock up and turn off the lights until October. Alas…

  • http://www.slamonline.com Ryan Jones

    albie: He’s my uncle… and I’m out.

  • http://shawn-kemps-offspring.blogspot.com/ H to the izzo

Some of us need to be entertained during the day-time hours,Ryan.

  • jay

Drew dont let your agent do you like Chris Stokes did the little boy band. okay the comparison does not make sense, but the point is clear. okay not so clear but you get the idea.

  • Young Chris MP3

When I saw this as the main headline I couldn’t help but think that you guys were working with TMZ.com for the afternoon.

  • Young Chris MP3

And if this happens, it pretty much means no Ron Artest, James Posey, or pretty much anyone for the Lakers next year or anytime soon, right? I mean, Pau and Lamar are getting over 13 million each and neither one of them can really be traded (nobody is dumb enough to trade for soft, over-paid players, right?)

  • http://idunkonthem.blogspot.com/ albie1kenobi

@Ryan: it’s good to have a famous uncle. and i see the awesome sense of humor runs in the family.
i can’t wait til Bynum becomes a force next year when Lakers flame out in the playoff, follow by Bynum blaming everyone in the organization for “not getting it done”, and bolting the Lakers for big money elsewhere while saying “Buss tell me how my ass taste”.

  • Celts Fan

Or in other words, Andrew is willing to take less, his Agent (who gets a percentage of any contract) is not.

  • http://idunkonthem.blogspot.com/ albie1kenobi

this is like the mom asking for max money on child support.

  • B. Long

    WTF!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • B. Long

Someone needs to tell David Lee to shut the fu(k up!

  • Arvydas Sabonis

Wait, like, David Lee? This is ridunkulous.

  • Chris Ujma

I nominate Roger Goodell for Lakers Payroll Manager

  • damascus

man hell naw!!!!!!…. im a laker fan…. but he didnt even really proven himself that much yet….i think i know where this is going…. for him it might just be for the money… if he doesnt get it… he will leave…..i think bynum wants to be the star…. not when u are team up with kobe… this is kobe team… i hope bynum ego doesnt get in the way!

  • http://www.myspace.com/hemantsbeats what

In like a year he will be worth $80 million, right now? not so much

  • http://firemitchkupchak.com Jackie Moon

    Ship his a$$ out!

  • http://www.freewebs.com/betcats BETCATS

what? he is totally worth it. If Kobe wants a ring, they will keep him. Andrew is top 5 Center in NBA.

  • Jose

whoa david lee plays AND is an agent.Daamn he’s good. why doesnt he tell bynum to go to NY in the first place. and he’s not worth that much Anywhere from 25 to 50 mill for the 5 yrs. but i aint goin higher than that

  • http://youtube.com/watch?v=-cza2yIk_yU SMK

Imagine what he’d be worth with two good knees

  • http://idunkonthem.blogspot.com/ albie1kenobi

so is kobe a prophet for saying ship his ass out? i love the laker fans backlash. it ain’t the lakers if it’s not drama-filled.

  • http://www.another48minutes.blogspot.com Gerard Himself

no way in hell the Lakers should pay him this. I like Mountain Drew, and he played well when he was healthy, but not 80 million well.

  • http://slamonline.com Russ Bengtson

They don’t HAVE to sign him to an extension this summer, right?

  • http://idunkonthem.blogspot.com/ albie1kenobi

not at all Russ, but I enjoy the knee-jerk reactions of Lakers fans.

  • http://idunkonthem.blogspot.com/ albie1kenobi

actually most fans have knee-jerk reactions, lakers fans are just more skillful at it.

  • http://slamonline.com The Biz

Let me ask a ? how many other true centers are there in the league not many I don’t believe he deserves that much but he does deserve at least 10 mil

  • http://hibachi20.blogspot.com/ RV

all i know is SOMEONE on that starting 5 is going to be ridiculously overpaid if they do extend him. Pau already makes 16 mil with 3 yrs left, odom makes 14 with 1 yr left, and Bynum has to be re-signed in 2 yrs. They better win it all next year because that may be the last time they’re all together.

  • Lz – Cphfinest3

Dr. Buss and Lakers-fans will eventually know what David Lee’s ass tastes like. Count on it.

  • drewstar

    if buss doesnt pay him..

    im sure otis smith will.

  • B. Long

If he drops 20 and 10 with 2.5 blocks next year(Dwight Howard Numbers) I have no problem giving him this NEXT summer, but right now? HELLSNAW!!!

  • http://www.freewebs.com/betcats BETCATS

Bynum = Top 5 center in the NBA. If kobe wants another ring, the Lakers will keep Andrew and pay him what he should get. I am sure their are a helluva lot of team that would like Andrew’s services.

  • B. Long

@BETCATS: If he’s healthy, your exactly right, but he still needs to prove himself for an entire season and in the playoffs before we hand him 80 mill.

  • Captain America

chump change for a limp chump

  • http://www.freewebs.com/betcats BETCATS

B Long: Imagine a perfect world for you Laker fans; gasol at the PF, his true postion while Bynum hammers it down at C, Odom does the dirty work at SF, Kobe is Kobe Bean Bryant at SG, and Derek Fisher(man) catches some open looks for more threes. Thats a dyNASTY team

  • http://hibachi20.blogspot.com/ RV

BET: there’s not way they keep odom if bynum gets his 80 mil, the starting five would make about 77 mil, the TEAM payroll was 75… Kobe’s gonna wish he was traded to a perfect world

  • Joey E.

they’re not gonna give it to him now. maybe midway through the season

  • The Answer

80 Mil for a decent HALF year? Lakers are insane if they give him that.

  • http://www.triplejunearthed.com/Dacre Dacre

I personally would go looking for healthy players…you but thats just me.

  • maik

somebody ask this david lee guy what bynum did to get a maximum deal now. i mean the guy has tremdnous talent, but maximum deals are for proven guys.bynum MAYBE be a guy to get a deal like that after his next deal will be over in 5 years.then again how many overpaid big mean are there in the league today??? thats right, way too many.

  • http://slamonline.com Russ Bengtson

Does Andrew Bynum really deserve the same contract as Dwight Howard? Really?

  • maik

russ, its the same answer to the question like is kobe bryant as good as michael jordan? even though i like kobe.

  • Hoop Swami

Bynum at the max? It shouldn’t happen, he’s not man enough yet and if he is, you have to earn it.
I think Artest would be a good Laker, drop Lamar like an anchor. The Lakers are weak defenders, I’m surprised how far they got this year.

  • http://www.myspace.com/linkstigatorkevin Kevin Wilson

Should be getting something more in line with Chris Kaman (5 years, $52.5 million two years ago), since he’s the most comparable player numbers-wise. Bynum’s 11th among all NBA centers in scoring, ninth in rebounding. How does that make him a top 5 center?

  • will

Kaman gets $52.5 million for 5 years?!

  • will

What do you do with $16 mil a year? And what about guys who work all day and don’t even get close to a fraction of that. NBA players should be happy that they get to do what they love for their job, and get about $200,000 a year. And if they don’t want it, I’m quite happy to take their place.

  • http://slamonline.com Russ Bengtson

I think you could give Bynum more than Kaman, but more than $65 million would be kind of insane. Let him average 20/10 for a full season on that repaired hinge before anyone starts throwing around the “m” word.

  • trick

    first…. oh, wait…..

  • Cameron

i hate how agents say a player wants this much but the player wants less it pisses me off like with varejo last year with the cavs. biggest bull ever.

  • Mr. 416

If you want 20 mill don’t ask for 20 mill ask for 80 mill and settle on 30 mill over five seasons

  • Maluza

Play 80 mill then get paid 80 mill..agent tryin to get deal out of it aint this a b****!
