Baron Will Just Have to Make Due Without Elton

by Marcel Mutoni

So, it turns out that Elton Brand’s surprise move to the East Coast did not have any effect on Baron Davis’s commitment to the Clippers. B-Diddy didn’t pull a Boozer on Donald Sterling’s franchise, and is resigned to simply trying to make the best of the situation in Clipper-ville.

The Clippers introduced their new point guard at a press meet&greet yesterday, and a dapper-looking David said he isn’t mad at Elton for his decision, and did the best he could in trying to spin the current Clipper situation into a positive. From The Press-Enterprise:

“No, once I commit to something, I do it,” Davis said. “I was committed to the Clippers, and they were committed to me. I was honored to come here. I did think that Elton was going to come. I talked to him and told him, ‘Hey, this is the best place for you. We can do great things.’ But, obviously he chose otherwise, and you can’t be mad at him for that.”

“There’s no more Elton Brand in LA. It’s my turn and a chance for the young guys to step up. We get a couple more free agents, and we’ll be ready to go.”

That’s called saying all of the rights things, the type of things one should say after signing a huge contract.

Here’s to hoping that a chance to live back home (and the money) will make Davis happy, because the basketball almost certainly will not.

still. baron/elton era would have been amazing!

  • Ken

Yeah, I would have loved to see them play together. So rare to see a truly talented center-pg combo.

  • Don Tano

    USA SUCKS!!!!!! GO DANILO!!!!!!

  • matt the jazz fan

    maybe emeka?

  • AllStah

    they’re still the clippers

  • http://www.nba.com/celtics/ Moose

@ AllStah: yah, history says that the clippers stink, but check out the celtics. in 06-07 they had the worst record in the L, and in 07-08 they had the best one and won the championship. KG was the difference in boston. Maybe B Diddy is the difference in LA.

  • Teddy-the-Bear

Yeah ^ but the Clippers were actually pretty good a few years ago with Brand. The Clippers are in a tough situation now, I don’t know how they can get out of it. Maybe Emeka can help out but then who for offense? Baron can’t set up all the plays by himself.

  • underdog

Baron needs to produce Big-O-like numbers to play in the playoffs.

who the hell is on the clippers right now? for the life of me, all i can think of is baron and chris kaman. who else?

  • http://fjkdlzf.com Jukai

Cat Mobley, Al Thorton, DeAndre Jordan, Eric Gordon, Brevin Knight, Smush Parker, Tim Thomas….. that’s all I can think of without looking at the website

  • Teddy-the-Bear

The Clippers can develop Gordan like crazy at the 2. He’ll get tonnes of valuable playing time next year. He’s probably the most underrated player in the draft this year and he’s got lots of potential. Al Thorton will have a chance to develop as well. The Clippers don’t seem too bad, give them a couple of years to make some more moves and develop and they’ll be ok.

  • Teddy-the-Bear

Oh and @ Moose, the Celtics completely rebuilt. Not only did they get KG, but they also got Ray Allen (extremely valuable), James Posey, PJ Brown, Sam Cassell, Eddie House, and developed Rondo.

i will be amazed if the current Clippers squad wins 40 games.

    Isn’t it “make do”?

  • http://shawn-kemps-offspring.blogspot.com/ TADOne

    Welcome home, Baron!

  • http://birdmonster.blogspot.com tenorca

Moose: These Clippers are way worse than the Warriors of last year. They didn’t make the playoffs with Monta, Jax, Beans, Buike, etc.; I don’t see how BD + K-man + Mobley + Al Thorton gets anywhere. The Sac/GS/Clippers triumverate might not win 100 games between ‘em.

  • tealish

That’s also called lying through your teeth!

  • blackjack

    Moose is not smart

  • B. Long

Al Thornton is gonna suprise alot of people this year. And I wouldn’t be suprised if Cuttino went back to playing like he did with Stevie Wonder back in the Houston days with B-Diddy on the squad.

  • http://www.nba.com/celtics/ Moose

@ tenorca and blackjack: i didnt say that the clippers were going to be good, but i did say that improvement is going to happen this year.

  • The Promise

The Clippers will be an 8th seed if anything. Too much competition in the West, and it may get even tougher next year.

  • B. Long

@The Promise: To Clipper fans that equals a threepeat!

  • ciolkstar

Cutty is way past the days of being an effective starting 2 in the NBA. Look toward the future, use this year to develop the hell out of Gordon and Thornton, pray that Kaman stays healthy and that DeAndre decides he wants to actually PLAY in the L. Maybe Tim Thomas can give something off the bench, maybe like Horry without the clutchness. It doesn’t look like they’ll make the playoffs but if baron keeps a good attitude, they stay healthy, and the young players move along quickly the could have a reasonably bright future. The west is just brutal though, esp with Portland on the rise.

  • http://fjkdlzf.com Jukai

Oh c’mon. The west is: Lakers, Mavericks, San Antonio, Phoenix, Houston, Utah, Denver, New Orleans. That is the west. MAYBE Portland can knock out one of them, depending on how well Rudy Fernandez, Greg Oden, and Bayless play right away. Clippers wont even come close.

  • http://www.lineofthenight.com Shannon Booher

Actually, Baron, yes you can be mad at him about that! Moral of the story… never trust a Dookie.

  • ciolkstar

I dont think the Mavs have a spot locked up and almost every team in the west is an injury or two from slipping bigtime. A year ago at this time people wouldn’t have given the Hornets a chance. I’m just saying, things can change quickly. I’d only be surprised by SA, LA, Utah, Houston, or NO missed the playoffs. Denver and Phoenix don’t defend well enough to protect themselves from unforseen injury, and Dallas might have missed their window. I’d be willing to bet Portland makes it next year over one of those 3.

  • B. Long

Houston is one more than likely injury away from being lottery bound.

Baron Will Just Have to Make Due Without Elton

Baron will just have to make “DO” not “DUE”.

  • http://www.freewebs.com/betcats BETCATS

Boom will do good things for the Clips. I hope they can land either Okafor, Luol Deng, Josh Smith, or Igoudala (slap in the face to Elton) and be a soild 7-10th seed

Clippers record in the upcoming season: 45-37.

  • http://www.brisbane.basketball.net.au Deuce21

Hmm, I’d probably flip that round, the west is too loaded. 35-47. Sorry Baron….

  • sab

yep, “make do”, not “make due” definitely. this is simple stuff!!

  • Mark Z

So BDavis left the run & gun Warriors for the Brand/Maggette-less Clippers? I guess Baron REALLY wanted to get back to LA. What happened to ‘the Bay is just crunk all the time”? BDiddy?

  • http://hibachi20.blogspot.com Hursty

yeh, B. Long, they’ve said that the last 3 years.

  • http://slam.com shawn

pop quiz: Better combo, Zach Randolph and B-Diddy, or Brand and Baron(This one should be a no brainer)

  • Kiraye

Is shaun livingston still on the clippers?
