Orlando Magic Season Preview

Orlando, where Ron Jeremy happens!

We continue previewing the Southeast Division with the Orlando Magic. You can read past previews here.

by Konate Primus

Here we are yet again my friends, another year, another season and still no real title contention. I hate to be the bearer of bad news but it’s true. For the last couple years it’s been fun watching the Orlando Magic along with your favorite porn star look-a-like develop and grow together. Dwight’s Rebounding and scoring ability is growing at an alarming rate.

Despite his height (and my complete lack of faith in him) Jameer Nelson turned into a fine point guard in this League. Hedo Turkoglu is at the peak of his career; Rashard lewis is healthy and playing great ball. New additions like the energetic and crafty Mickael Pietrus, along with veteran point guard Anthony “Beetljuice” Johnson – who at times shows flashes of brilliance – will try and put it all together this season.

Building off of last year’s momentum, the Magic will pick up right where they the left off. A few offseason trades and a year of gelling together is great for the organization and amazing for keeping hope alive in the fan’s hearts. Last season the Magic fell to mighty Motor City Pistons in the Second Round of the playoffs. This year they will one-up themselves and make it to the Eastern Conference Finals against KG and Boston for a nice fairytale adidas brotherhood showdown.

How’d I come to that wild and crazy prediction?

Well, it’s simple to me. Dwight comes in year in and year out with new tricks up his sleeve — whether it’s better shot selection, better footwork or more willingness to snatch down every board. What’s this off season’s lesson? Lets see, well he got a gold medal in the Olympics, he played under Coach K with the likes of Kobe, CP3 and Bron – three of the League’s best young leaders. Is there any chance he picked any leadership skills?

Did it teach him how to pick up a team and carry it on his giant 7-foot frame? I think so, or at least hope so. Leadership is one of the biggest holes in his game right now. Now, I don’t mean leading by example, he has that down pat, he plays hard night in and night out. But he needs the ability to jump out of his nice guy suit and get in his teammates a$$ from time to time, just to keep ‘em honest.

I have faith that this is something that will be closed with age and maturity I think it’s just one of the things playing college ball teaches if it’s not already in you like LBJ has it in him. My point in saying all that is this team has a great deal of potential, allot of role playing stars who can score the ball (Hedo, Rashard and Jameer) they’re equipped with shooters such as J.J. Redick and Brian Cook. Now Mickael Pietrus provides a certain defensive toughness for the Magic as well. It will be a fun and exciting year, but we all have to wait and see if Dwight is ready to superman this b*tch!

Yooooooooouu, will just have to wait and see. I say he is.

Key Players Added: Mickael Pietrus, Anthony Johnson, Dwayne Jones, Courtney Lee

Key Players Lost: Carlos Arroyo, James Augustine, Keyon Dooling , Maurice Evans, Pat Garrity

Last year’s outcome: 52- 30; second round loss to Pistons

2008-09 prediction: Eastern Conference Finals

Pat Garrity finally got banged up for that Billy the Kid shooting, oh wait….

  • Ken

    Good write up.

  • matt the jazz fan

    toronto can beat’em.

  • http://www.slamonline.com James the balla

Toronto can’t beat them. Wheres is number 12 today… I assume dwight. But it should actually be PP.

pietrus is better than mo evans. but “career backup” johnson isnt near the defender keyon is. so orlando is really going to miss dooling, besides, who is going to put ray allen in his place?

Could you imagine if Dwight developed his offense like Amare has?

  • http://www.shawn-kemps-offspring.blogspot.com Eboy

Nice work Konate, but ECF’s? This year? I don’t know….the Sixers, Pistons, Cavs and Celts should be booking time in that spot. It would be nice to see a Florida team competing late in May though, so I’ll remember this come playoff time.

  • Niio

More like could you imagine if Amare cared more about playing defence and grabbing boards like Dwights does? SCARY!

  • Clockwork

If you combined Amare’s offence and Dwight’s defence you would basically get Hakeem Olajuwon

    Loved the preview Konate.
    Loved the prediction even better.
I think Jameer will be solid but having Wilks/Johnson will show how much this team will miss Dooling/Arroyo.

  • jay

Hakeem is untouchable. I’d pick him as my starting center all-time. back up kareem)
    @ 4. Garnett (back up t-robot)
@ 3. LBJ (pip on the bench)
    @ 2. 23 (back up kobe)
@ 1. the Magic man (back up stockton)

  • ENDS

gotta love the love. Suprise EBoy with no love for the florida team. Anthony Johnson running the point doesnt make sense to me

  • ENDS

and I know Hakeem is extremely underrated, the dude was a bad man. I saw him tear up the MDE when he was just starting to be the MDE. he Had offense and Defense qown pat, and is still too humble about it.

  • ENDS

Im playin’ EBoy im rooting for the Heat this year to make it competetive. Toronto can not beeat Orlando, they Should that in April. We could have beat the Celtics and i’m hoping we get that chance this year in the ECF. My opinion

  • johnk

Magic weren’t even close to the Pistons in the playoffs. Hoping that Dwight gets better and becomes a leader doesn’t convince me that they can beat the Cavs (who are a better playoff team than the Pistons) or Pistons in the playoffs.

  • http://slamonline.com Khalid Salaam

Losing Dooling in an underrated loss for them. they’ll lose in the 2nd round again.

  • Big L

The Magic will be a top 3 team this year. I’m just scared of the bench. Marcin Gortat is our backup PF/C?! Can we get a trade for Nick Collison and his Hills loving a$$!

  • ynneb

nice preview. that prediction, obviously, is a huge reach. hope you stretched first.

dhoward is insane. orlando will be strong as long as he’s around. obviously.

but, by your logic, every rotation player on the gold medal team will now ‘lead’ their nba team to greener pastures. if so, that’s a L-wide wash. if not, same damn team, bullying the weak & getting owned by best teams (ie, boston/detroit).

  • http://slamonline.com Konate Primus

@ynneb, well my logic is he finally got a chance to not be the go to guy and and see how to demand 100 percent from your teammates in a respectable way. i just think thats something dwight should’ve got from that experience.

  • http://slamonline.com Konate Primus

@ eboy, the celts will remain 1st, the cavs will be 2nd magic 3rd, sixers 4th piston will drop to #5 toronto will stay a bottom feeder cus Jermaine o’neal is a B*tch and # 7 will be the bulls 8 is a toss up for whoever!

  • http://slamonline.com Konate Primus

oh wait, i forgot about the hawks, Sorry i’m soo not use to including them in teams that matter! but they will be better than TO

  • http://shawn-kemps-offspring.blogspot.com/ TADOne

Konate: tsk, tsk. The Pistons are not finishing behind Orlando or Philly. The Cavs are still not a great regular season team, so I don’t see that either. The Magic will need David Blaine to pull off a 3rd seed.

  • aotearaw

Delsusional review, no way are they making the EC finals

  • aotearaw

    Delusional even

  • davidR

why’d they have to change their jerseys? they’re whack

  • davidR

although their starting 5 is solid, the magic would be an elite team in the east if they had more depth. check their second unit.. they’re an injury away from throwing this season away

  • The Ghost of Wilt Chamberlain

Pretty ordinary write up in my opinion. I thought that BETCATS was the worst so far but I guess we have a new champion.

  • King David

    what about philly
