Scooter-Gate: Monta Ellis Suspended 30 Games (Sans Pay)

by Marcel Mutoni

It took them a while, but the Golden State Warriors have finally decided what to do about their scooter-loving point guard. To the surprise of just about everyone, Monta Ellis will receive more than a slap on the wrist from his employer.

From the Mercury News:

Warriors president Robert Rowell announced in a press release that the team has suspended injured guard Monta Ellis for 30 games for violating his contract in the Scooter Incident.

Here’s how you calculate the salary loss: NBA fiscal seasons are based on a 110-game grid, counting in pre-season and potential post-season games. If you take away 30 games from 110, which is 27.2% of the total, you get a $2.99M salary hit.

The suspension is symbolic at best (due to injury, Ellis would’ve likely those missed those games anyway); what’s going to hurt Monta is the loss in pay.

Monta and his camp have yet to react to the news, but it’s not hard to guess how they feel about losing out on $3 mil. Certainly something to keep an eye on.

    haha scooter accident

  • woodley3

    FIRST!

  • andrew

Gosh. That was unexpected. But similar to an Aussie rules scenario where a bad boy footballer lied about being in a car accident, then had to admit that he was in it, and was suspended for the rest of the season… but $3mil? Huge.

  • dpak

    jesus my fantasy team’s screwed.

lol @ dpak … and sucks being him i guess. Should’nt have rocked a Moped and stayed in the Lambo!!

  • http://www.twofistedpress.com Pve84

It does suck, but Monta did ignore the terms of his hudongous contract in reckless fashion and is lucky to not have tossed more than three million and his pride out of the window–I mean off the side of his moped.

  • RV

does anyone know how they decide the amount of games to suspend him? Can they pretty much suspend him for any amount they wish?

  • http://www.freewebs.com/betcats DP

So is he suspended now or when he is able to suit up again? If it’s the second, I don’t give a damn, the warriors are dumb as hell. They might as well get ready for next year if they plan on suspending the guy once he heals from his injury and is ready to play on his two feet again.

  • RV

DP that’d ehy i was asking, he’s suspended as of now, so most , if not all, of the suspension will be games he was going to miss anyway. Smart on their part in way, they punish him only with no effect on the team.

  • RV

    that’s why*

seems fair to me, but a bit surprised nonetheless

  • CP34MVP

this is just sad on Ellis’ part. Take a limo next time

  • B_Easy24

Man 2.99 mil that ain’t $hit, wow he makes 11 mil a year

  • KA

GS management doesnt do whats fair, but whats rite.

  • http://nbaukfan.blogspot.com/ mat smith

bout time a team stepped up and made a point, id sit in cotton wool if I had that contract

  • http://hibachi20.blogspot.com Hursty

His suspension is from game 1 of the regular NBA season @DP and RV. His manager was also involved in the decision making process.

  • Marijn

Breaches the contract and still manages to keep 63 mil. Not bad.

  • justin

No, dumbass, he doesn’t get to keep 63 mil. Maybe KG gets to keep 63 mil, but not Monta. Economics class, you’ll get there one day.

  • http://dyalekt.com d.Y.

Pretty hostile for this early in the day justin. It’s too bad you’re unhappy ’bout something, but no need to share that. That’s what we call a b*tch move. You talking about taxes? I guess I’m a dumbass too. I haven’t taken an economics class since 10th grade. I got a friend over at Lehman brothers, maybe he can help explain…

  • RV

justin, how much does he get to keep then?

  • justin

DY, Im not worried about what “we” call this, that aint what a b*tch move is anyway, maybe you’ll learn that one day too, you and your friend at Lehman brothers can go discuss it over a latte or something queer like that. RV, I don’t know how much he gets to keep, probably enough to buy another scooter, but not 63 mil. Just sayin, you make 63 mil, you dont keep 63 mil.

  • http://slamonline.com Yknot

That suspended salary should be given to Jay Williams!

  • http://hibachi20.blogspot.com/ RV

either way, i think we all know he meant 66-3=63 million…not that big of a deal.

  • The Ghost of Wilt Chamberlain

If I breach my contract agreement with my employer, I’m out of a job. Monta should count his blessings that it was only the money he lost. Also, when you make that sort of money does $3M really make that much of a difference to your lifestyle? I wish I knew, but my guess is not in the slightest.

  • http://hibachi20.blogspot.com/ RV

To use it makes no difference, since we’re far from making even 1 million, but definitely his lifestyle won’t suffer since he’ll still have more than enough to get what he needs….but i guess the 3 million could be the difference between a regular pool and a pool with a cave that has a shark aquarium inside.

  • http://hibachi20.blogspot.com Hursty

Half that money he earns goes to taxes. Then family want stuff, friends, getting houses, lifestyle etc. If hes on a 66 million$ contract he probably only gets 30$million in the bank account.

  • vmcb

    Only $30 million!!!!!!!!!

  • gii

    what an idiot.

  • http://www.lkz.ch Darksaber

DAMN! That’s gotta hurt. next time refrain from endangering your career Monta.

  • Marijn

Did you also comment on how he doesn’t “lose” 3 million as well, Justin? Isn’t the calculation of this ‘salary hit’ pre-tax? When people discuss contracts, wages etc., are they not talking about income before taxes? You seem like an angry kid.

  • Froggiestyle

How much will that $3mil vespa go for on ebay?

  • ktokyo

fair enough. If I get hurt and can’t work I lose money too. When you have everything, you have everything to lose… Mo’ money, mo’ problems… cash rules everything arou – you get the point.

  • Tommy Patron

Just watch GS implode this year. The whole franchise.

I’m tired of reading about pro athletes who continue to screw up the greatest profession in the world. Quit with the motorcycles, scooters, drugs, dead weight friends, gambling, sketchy clubs, etc.. Use your head.

  • quantumofsolace

He got hurt and now he can’t work. I wonder if he has AFLAC
