Did Baron Davis Get Paid to Be Fat?

by Marcel Mutoni

Back in September, Baron Davis famously admitted to going on the Jenny Craig plan in order to shed some weight for the upcoming season. Well, it appears now that there may have been financial motivation behind the revelation.

Baron, it seems, might have pocketed himself some nice coin for eating fatty foods over the summer. So sayeth the NY Daily News (See: sidebar):

The Clippers’ Baron Davis is getting paid $250,000 for endorsing a weight-reduction drink. The Clippers privately say that the weight Davis gained to do the endorsement accounted for his slow start.

Having signed him to a five-year deal with $62.5 million guaranteed, you can see how they’re not very thrilled by that.

Celebrities are asked to gain (or lose) weight all the time, normally for movie roles that pay them tens of millions of dollars. The 29-year old Davis - who was already hefty by League standards - reportedly gained weight for a quarter of a million bucks. Awesome.

The Clip (Horror) Show, at 4-16, is currently last in the Pacific division. But thanks to Jenny Craig, their point guard has a terrific figure!

    I don’t believe a word of this.

  • Fredo Posted: Dec.8 at 10:56 am
I believe it. BD has always had talent, but he doesn’t want to put in the work ethic to win rings. He wants to be a media mogul. Still, can’t see Bron doing that.

  • Bulls Fan Posted: Dec.8 at 11:00 am
I’m confused. Isn’t Jenny Craig a weight LOSS product? So how did this cause him to GAIN weight? This article doesn’t make sense to me.

  • riggs Posted: Dec.8 at 11:22 am
wtf? i do that for free.

  • LexaB Posted: Dec.8 at 11:23 am
If everything up there is true, the sports’ world is really foing down a bad path!!! And for 250.000 dollars only???? I mean, come on, does winning anything other than big bucks mean anything to those guys????

  • watchout Posted: Dec.8 at 11:38 am

  • Ryne Nelson Posted: Dec.8 at 11:43 am
The Clippers have fallen to new lows. Baron Davis’ slow start due to Jenny Craig? Please.

  • ber Posted: Dec.8 at 11:43 am
Bulls Fan, essentially they made him gain the weight to help him lose it.

  • William Posted: Dec.8 at 11:48 am
There blaming Jenny Craig on his slow start? Clips need a new coach, new attitude and some new players.

  • Nathalie Posted: Dec.8 at 11:49 am

Well, maybe he gained the weight so they could include it in his and Nash’s video. “You a$$ is so big, you don’t need suspenders.”

  • ciolkstar Posted: Dec.8 at 12:29 pm
I’m a fan. But I have to admit, him and Fatty Gordon might be enablers. Anyone want to hit up the In N Out?

  • scott Posted: Dec.8 at 12:34 pm
I know the facts - Baron did not gain weight to do this - he always loses weight before the season and this year he did it with Jenny Craig. He showed up for pre-season camp at his target weight. Do your homework.

  • NBK Posted: Dec.8 at 12:36 pm
just like i said before the season, marcus camby will be injured off and on all year and baron davis will just collect his paycheck. They know the clips ain’t winnin and they are loving every second of it.

Do you think he’s got The McDonalds Adverts in his mind for next?

  • Joel O's Posted: Dec.8 at 1:42 pm
Twisted thinking by the always classy Clipper organization. You’d think that after decades of suck, management would realize that they’re the ones to blame for running a joke of a franchise.

  • jaywhy Posted: Dec.8 at 2:12 pm
did the entire Knicks get paid to be fat?

  • Codeman Posted: Dec.8 at 3:38 pm
I think that Baron, Starbury ,Vince and Artest should be on the same team cuz it would just be so interesting. A fatty, a couple self centred douchebags and a gangster. Oh how sweet it is………..lol

  • Cizzo Posted: Dec.8 at 4:39 pm
I would have too, for how much??????????????/

  • Moose Posted: Dec.8 at 4:41 pm
Boom Dizzle remains my favorite point guard in the NBA. I have reasons if you guys want them.

  • Moose Posted: Dec.8 at 6:57 pm
Unprovoked, I’ll give em anyways. Baron Davis is one of those rare players who is larger than life. He hasn’t won a ton of awards, he hasn’t brought home a Larry O’Brien, but his sense of humor is untouchable. The co-founder of ibeatyou.com has made at least one hilarious video that I’m sure most of you have seen, you know, the one with him and the Clippers jersey at the restaurant? Anyways, there’s always a smile on this point guard’s face. Big for his position at 6′3″, 214 pounds (almost EXACTLY Deron Williams’ dimensions), Baron can dunk over anybody, most notably Andrei Kirilenko (2006-07 playoffs). Baron is extremely fun to watch, has a warm aura about him, and that makes him a fan favorite, even with fans outside of LA. BDiddy has averaged 17.1 points, 7.2 assists, 4.1 rebounds and 2 steals per game over his ten year career (ten and a fifth, I guess, with the 2008-09 season counting). He is looking to bring the Clips back to life, the face of the franchise. Well I don’t see that happening, but Baron will keep chugging. That was an excerpt from a Hibachi piece I did a week or so ago . . . so I apologize if it’s a bit out of context.

    Codeman: You’re stupid.

  • Codeman Posted: Dec.8 at 7:10 pm
I was just kidding….I really don’t believe this story @ all.

  • LAN Posted: Dec.8 at 7:37 pm
    …im lost for words… LOL

  • JoeMama Posted: Dec.8 at 9:08 pm
unbelievable, no really why would a jenny craig product make some1 gaain weight, especially a fit and active basketball player, unless the man was drinking str8 up oil i have no reason to believe that this is an excuse to baron davis’ lack of work ethic. If you were getting paid millions of bucks, some people let the money get into their head and not the fact that thy want to play basketball to get a ring, to be the best, and to rock the world with your creative moves to the baket..which I might add Baron Davis was doing plenty of in Golden State Warriors..We Want Him Back!!

  • Roy Posted: Dec.8 at 9:34 pm
    Hmm… that’s not right…

  • Kid Presto Posted: Dec.8 at 11:07 pm
    I’d do it.

  • Todd Spehr Posted: Dec.9 at 1:19 am
Did Baron Davis Get Paid To Be Fat Lever?

  • Jack Posted: Dec.9 at 4:26 am
I’d do it. But then again I’m not the face of a Los Angeles sports franchise, and getting paid 62.5 mill. Ah well.

  • [...] The Baron Davis project with the Clippers has not exactly started off as planned. Baron began feuding with coach Mike Dunleavy about the team’s extensive playbook and regimented style mere weeks into the season. Through 20 games, the team is 4-16 and the prospects are grim. To make matters worse, Davis was the team’s marquee addition in the off-season. Problem is the guy packed on some pounds over the summer for endorsement purposes, we’re told. Yes, the guy became a Jenny Craig spokesperson and had to plump up for the part. [...]
