Jackson on Bynum: ‘He’s a kid, he doesn’t know any better’

by Marcel Mutoni

For the second straight night, Andrew Bynum suggested that Phil Jackson didn’t use him properly. After hearing criticism from his coach about a lack of rebounding (Young Andrew only managed three boards) in the victory against the bumbling Sixers, Bynum explained his shortcomings on the boards to the media.

From the Press-Enterprise:

“I might have gotten some in the last six minutes,” Bynum said, referring to being on the bench in the latter stages of the fourth quarter for the second straight night. “You never know until the fat lady sings, and she sings for me a lot.”

As for Phil, he doesn’t think Bynum has any right to question his decisions regarding playing time and rotations.

“That’s none of his business. He just goes out and plays. That’s his job,” Jackson said matter-of-factly. When pressed further, he smiled wryly and added, “He’s a kid. He doesn’t know any better.”

I don’t think any real problems are going to arise between Phil and Andrew as the season drags on (Phil’s too shrewd to let that happen), but it’ll be fun to watch just how much longer they’ll continue to lob quips at one another through the Fourth Estate.

    Professionalism, Andrew.

    bynum later quipped “whatever grandpa”

Phil should start playing him 48 minutes a game, Wilt style. Give the kid what he wants.

  • 王骁男

Bynum was not humble as before.he should learn more modest.but there is just a news which is man-made by design.

  • namik

Bynum needs to shut the F up and just play. Kobe, Jordan, Shaq etc. rarely questioned Phil. Who is Bynum at this point anyway? Plus the Lakers are 15-2 and the coaching definitely has something to do with it. Maybe when he’s actually won the championship for the Lakers like everyone claims he will, then he can start giving lip to the coach.

    Shaq rarely questioned Phil?
I don’t think so, but I guess it’s back with the Lakers’ drama

  • http://lastknickstanding.blogspot.com Bryan

Play him nonstop and watch him pass out or foul out by the third quarter.

Bynum’s a kid, he’s passionnate, he wants to play everytime he can and I think that can only bring good stuff for the Lake’s show!!! But yes, I agree, he’s a little young and championshipless to give some coaching lessons to the Zen Master!!! Ah those young guns, they always think they know better…

  • http://www.myfreesport.com LexaB

And playing him nonstop could be good for the kid, just for the fun of seeing him complaining about not catching enough rebounds because he plays too much :) !!!

Considering that Phil have been serenaded by Opera more than anyone over the years, young Andrew should just shut his pie-hole.

the fun won’t start until Bynum start mouthing Kobe. Big brother/little brother all over again

  • maio

Jordan never questioned Phil because Phil never questioned Jordan.

  • http://nbaukfan.blogspot.com/ mat smith

MJ never questioned Phil? no, he just did what he wanted without vocalising it, read “more than a game” by PJ and he writes about Michael questioning the triangle for years, but no-one is ever gonna be MJ, cetainly not Mountain Drew

I love both of these guys. I dont think this will affect their relationship at all.

    ship his *ss outta here.

  • floe

i can see why bynum’s frustrated though.. he’s been pushed into a corner since kobe went off on his stupid barrage two summers ago. at this point the kid’s improved his game enough to be a top 3 center in the league except he’s the still stuck at being the third option in his own team.

considering the lakers are blowing through everyone he should probably be more patient with the transition but if i was his age with the history behind me i’d be pissed off too. i bet in three years time bynum and kobe go at it old school lakers style.

  • Captain America

    Bynum for US President!!

  • riggs

    bynum to the heat!

  • Petter

Bynum to the Mavs! We need a real center….

bynum ain’t going anywhere, Jackson’s trying to motivate him in his own weird way.

  • Young Chris MP3

LOL @ “I might have gotten some in the last 6 minutes.” Bynum is a clown.

  • http://twentythreenine.blogspot.com Russ Bengtson

Phil’s got dreamcatchers older than Drew.

  • http://idunkonthem.blogspot.com/ albie1kenobi

    Bynum to infinity and beyond!

  • Breeze

i think bynum is not looking that big picture when it comes to quantity and quality..if he doesnt notice he’s a risk when it comes to continous play because he has already been injured twice..so why not preserve the big man and play him the 48 min..in the playoffs…if he plays 30 min…he should be able to grab atleast 10 boards..phil is like come on even luc longley did that..its not like your busy scoring all night thats what gasol is for..

  • j4zzm4n

this is nothing major young drew will be beasting it on christmas day showing those celts whose boss!!!!!

This is affecting my fantsy stats Drew… Get it together and stop complaining.

  • http://www.slamonline.com Cub Buenning

This is somewhat hard to believe.
15-2 (which is well within the 70-win range pace) and the hall of fame coach is getting questioned repeated times by an unproven player?

    Give Bynum a clipboard.

  • SWIFTboy

As I said before, this is all Zen-Master designed. You could even say Bynum is getting Zeigned.

    Phil is my favourite.

  • PMAC

he 21 years old he a grown man!

  • mike

I hope they never stop talking about the Pacers game. I hope this Pacers game will still be an issue in July. Phil’s next book. “4th Quarter: The fine line between youth and wisdom.”

  • illydiva

I agree PMAC, and I don’t hear the same condescension in Bynum’s words as I do in Phil’s. PJAX is an a$$hole! A winning one, but an a$$hole nonetheless.

  • http://hibachi20.blogspot.com Moose

illydiva, no respect for the Zen Master? Come on, man!

  • http://www.nba.com iLL wiLL

This is a good battle between Young Andrew and Phil. Funny too. Phil should take Andrew out of the starting line up for one game, just to mess with him.

“that ‘kid’ needs to shut up and play”

  • Eric Woodyard

i agree, bynum needs to “shut the hell up and play!” the lakers are rolling right now, he needs to just ride the ship or we can ship him out…lol

  • Nathalie

the problem here is bynum has got a hot head. all that time last season he watched his team get to the finals, and all this time this past summer he heard espn commentators saying how the lakers missing key in the finals was bynum, he has buffed his head up.
No Andrew Bynum, you have not arrived. And if you think you have, where does that leave your career??

  • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=627550406 KA

    phil makes bada55 quotes.

  • Goldennugget

Yeah and this is the supposed “missing piece” for the Lakers to dethrone the Celtics. Yeah right, Phil said it all, he is just a kid. And a retarted one at that, have you ever heard him talk? Jeez, its turrible.

  • chintao

All Fil’s class is tied to Jeannie’s a$$.

  • chintao

Fil’s a dirty hippie. He doesn’t know any better.
