Worthy of Your Attention

by Marcel Mutoni

Denver @ Atlanta: “Superstars” Joe Johnson and Carmelo Anthony will do battle tonight in the ATL, and it’ll be interesting to see which of the two studs comes out on top:

I decided to look at it another way. Would I trade Joe Johnson straight up for Carmelo Anthony right now? I don’t think so. LeBron, of course, is another story. So I can see where my scout friend was going with his analysis.

The best part is we get to see Melo and Joe on the same floor Monday night and judge for ourselves which guys is more valuable to his team, which me be far more important than which one is the better player in general.

Chicago @ New Jersey: Larry Hughes, as per usual, is unhappy with his playing time. The good news for Bulls fans, is that he doesn’t appear long for the Windy City. Rejoice!

Orlando @ Detroit: In Motown tonight, Orlando will go up against their Playoff nemesis from the past couple of years. I dunno, something tells me a Magic/Pistons series would be a hell of a lot closer today than in years past.

joe johnson, melo trade? thats a tough one. i don’t know who i would take. though my initial thought is to lean towards johnson beacause he can play both backcourt positions and seems a more mature player

  • Shaun Ow Yang

Khalid, by mature you could also mean older? After all isn’t Melo younger than Joe? Would that be a significant enough factor to want to have a team keep Melo? Not sure… I agree that Joe’s far more level headed. After all, he didn’t moan when Atl weren’t making the playoffs and helped the young ones back in. Melo on the other hand clearer needs Billups around

I have both Melo and Joe on my fantasy squad, its going down tonight! I really wish I had League Pass…

Depends on what your team needs but I think Melo and Joe are about dead even talent wise.

Actually, Joe Johnson did complain when the Hawks sucked. Right before last season he said he needed more vets and he was tired of losing. Marvin Williams discussed how this affected team morale a while back. Johnson hasn’t had as many problems as Melo, but he has complained.
I also think Joe Johnson right now is better than Melo.

  • ClydeSays

Johnson is a better all around player right now. He can shoot, handle, defend and pass. As much as I like Melo, he seems to ‘forget’ who he’s defending every third trip down the floor and I doubt he’ll ever rack up as many assists as turnovers.

Talent-wise, I think Melo beats out Johnson. But maturity-wise (on-court, team leader) I’d take Johnson. In the Hawks’ position, Johnson over Melo. Only in the Hawks’ position.

Joe The Basketball Player all day :)
    Yes I’m biased.

  • NACHOveli

I dont know if i would trade him for melo, but i certainly would never trade him for boris diaw and future 1st round pick. oh wait……go suns????

Larry Hughes should be traded to G-State 4 Andris Biedrins

  • http://nba.com tealish

Moose, in what areas is Melo more talented than Joe? Besides hype and fine, maybe rebounding, I don’t see it.

  • http://www.ravingblacklunatic.blogspot.com Big Man

Tealish, I think Melo’s ceiling is higher than Joe Johnson. If he worked on defense and rebounding, he could easily average 25 and 10, while shifting between the three and the four and creating matchup nightmares. Hell, if he was a more willing passer you could add in 4 assists to that stat line. I don’t think Joe Johnson could put up those numbers or be that amazing a player.

trade Melo for a sack of potatoes

  • Niio

Who was that first round pick that came with Boris?

  • WhaHuh

I agree with Big Man about Melos ceiling but I also think that SF is the least important position in basketball. (LeBron is SF in name only)

  • Niio

See that’s the thing with Melo, its always if he working on his defense and rebounding he would be amazing! We have been saying this for 6 seasons now and it still hasn’t happened so I doubt it ever will.

  • Jose

yea i go joe all day but melo does have the oppourtunity to improve beyond johnson, he needs to apply himself to i tho.

    Niio >>>
Was it Alando Tucker? Robin Lopez? They had till 2008 to use it, and prior to the 2008 pick it would be “protected”, in other words they couldn’t take the pick if it was something like top 14 or so…. I THINK they might have held of and taken Robin Lopez…I hope they didnt try and get Dragic with it, either way the pick hasn’t proven to be overly great for them…
    …for shame.

  • Niio

Dacre I have no idea, I thought Tucker would get some burn because he could fill it up in college and I thought their style of play suited him but I guess not? Is he even still in the NBA? Also what ever happen to Julius Hodge? Got drafted by the Nugs and was never heard from again.

Is Melo even the MVP of his team? They didn’t do sh!t before they got Billups to lead their team. What does Melo do well other than score? I know Slam’s all on his diock but I’d rather have JJ all day every day.

  • clapzilla

It Would Help If Any of You Guys Actually Had Seen Melo Play This Season. His Scoring Is Way Down, But He’s Having His Second Best Season. He’s Racking Up Double-Doubles, He’s Getting Assists (he did have a drought recently though), And He’s Defending. I’m Not Buying The Leadership Part Either. Melo Carried The Nuggets To A Division Title In ’06, JJ Helped The Hawks To 37 Wins Last Season. He Was A Beast In The 3 Games They Won In The Playoffs, But The Celtics Outscored Them By Like 1,000 Points In Boston.

  • Fred34

Now that he shaved his braids Melo’s even softer than before. You can’t take him over Joe – he too pretty now – JJ can grind it out. :)

Niio- check my name, I did a big story on Julius Hodge a week or so ago, with a new update yesterday.

Aint nobody stealing the ball off Joe Johnson, and aint nobody stopping Melo on the low block or on a mid range jumper.
