Boston’s Big Three: Talking Themselves Into This Marbury Thing

by Marcel Mutoni

Having lost four of their last six ballgames, their vaunted defense showing signs of weakness, and their even more vaunted team unity (sorry, UBUNTU) not looking so hot of late, Boston’s players think Stephon Marbury would look pretty darn good in white and green right about now.

After last week’s report of a deal potentially going down between Steph and the Celtics, the Beantowners landed in New York last night (of all places), where they promptly lost to the Knicks. Afterward, the Gotham media pressed them about what life would be like with Starbury. And for the most part, the C’s seem perfectly fine with the idea, if not downright enthusiastic about it:

“I’m not opposed to Steph. I feel like Steph has a lot of basketball in him and his IQ is very, very high,” said Garnett. “He is one of the best point guards I’ve ever played with. I wouldn’t be opposed to that. If Steph came to this team and made it better, I’m all for that.”

“He’s been a great talent in this league for a long time,” All-Star Ray Allen said before the game. “I don’t know the situation that happened with him in New York, but I know he’s got a lot of basketball left in him.”

As for Stephon himself, he sounds pretty stoked about the possibility as well. And why wouldn’t he be? It’s a match made in heaven. What could possibly go wrong?!

Steph deserves a ring more than Iverson, Nash, McGrady, Hill, and Carter combined. He’s been through so much crap… well, 75% of the crap he put himself through, minor detail… that I would feel much better about the world if Steph got himself that title

They need to refocus on winning games, now!

  • http://lastknickstanding.blogspot.com Bryan

F*ck man. My two favorite players on teams I can’t stand first AI then Marbury. This is a terrible sports year for me.

  • http://twentythreenine.blogspot.com Russ Bengtson

Let’s let it happen first before we get all worked up about it. As I understand it, Steph’s not giving up any money, and if he doesn’t, he’ll be stuck in basketball purgatory until his contract runs out in July or whenever. If you think Steph’s primary goal is to win a championship, you’re crazier than he is.

ouch garnett, “his IQ is very, very high” ouch

Good for my NBA 2K9 team.

If this is going to happen, Steph’s gotta lay off that “I want all my money” kick.

  • PArson

NO ONE deserves a ring MORE than Allen Iverson!!!

  • http://thesportsdiaryonline.blogspot.com Roy

    I knew Moose wouldn’t like the news… :D

  • Kieran

Jukai that is the dumbest thing you’ve ever written, please give me a list of reasons why Steph deserves a ring more than AI and Hill, McGrady and Carter Im not so bothered about.
When this rumour first surfaced I thought it was crazy, but the more I think about it, it might work. Steph has always had ability regardless of his attitude and ego, and he has more motivation than anybody to prove everyone wrong so who knows?

  • Kieran

Just noticed you actually had Nash there aswell….oh dear

  • 5293

in my mind the two players who deserve a ring most are iverson and kidd.

  • http://slamonline.com Khalid Salaam

steph deserves a ring more than who??!!

  • Captain America

KG with a Starbury skull tat?

  • ClydeSays

Yeah, I don’t think it’s happening. I doubt Steph is giving up a penny of his contract, since that is likely the last big money he’ll get. I expect he’ll be in Europe playing ball before he gets any kind of NBA contract above the minimum.

  • vtrobot

Can you imagine if Steph went to the C’s, played well, was accepted by the team, and played a big role in helping them win another championship? Then imagine if they resigned him to a longer term contract.

I think Steph is one of my least favorite players in the league, and I’m in Boston. Still I think this could work well.

  • http://violetsprite.tumblr.com Ulee

I agree with PArson, AI does deserve a ring … and Jamal Crawford deserves to get to play in the playoffs (had to sneak that in).
Steph has enough money to buy his own ring …
I also don’t think Steph will work well in Boston. He will demand the ball and there goes your team work.

  • http://www.where-basketball-b-longs.blogspot.com/ B. Long

Iverson, Nash, and Grant Hill ALL deserve a ring more than Starbury.

  • http://thesportsdiaryonline.blogspot.com Roy

I’m with you on that B. Long. :D

  • http://double-technical.blogspot.com Zee!

Exactly how is Rajon supposed to take this?

  • http://fklsd.com Jukai

Kieran: Humor not your thing? I was being sarcastic.

  • http://fklsd.com Jukai

Also, that is DEFFINITELY not the dumbest thing I have ever written, facetious or not.

  • underdog

I’m afraid Russ is right. Steph won’t give up a cent.

  • http://www.bbl.org.uk Josh D

The Celtics have started to lose, so i guess Marbury can make himself feel right at home in Boston

  • speedy

As long as these dollar signs are in front of his eyes he can’t focus on basketball .

  • rav

“Steph deserves a ring more than Iverson, Nash, McGrady, Hill, and Carter combined. He’s been through so much crap…”

pretty much all the crap he’s ever been through was his own fault, and he deserves a ring about as much as ndudi ebi and michael olokowandi

  • dubya816

Haha the person who deserves a ring the most is LeBron. Have you seen this guy?

  • http://fklsd.com Jukai

You’ve never watched basketball IN YOUR LIFE RAV!!!!!

Forget the Marbury talk for a second…I like the fact the MY Celtics aren’t making excuses for losing but instead making lists for WHY they are losing. Great teams come closer during losing streaks and setbacks. This is the makings of a great team and Marbury couldn’t mess that up even if he tried. Bring him on and let’s see what happens. (No one deserves a ring when they are more concerned about their money than anything else-I guess he wants it for the kids in the hood. lol)

  • http://theghostofroyhobbs.blogspot.com Mo Charlo

    Bostonballer is racist.

  • http://violetsprite.tumblr.com Ulee

@BOSTONBALLER you sure about that? You do know they nick named Marbury “The Cancer”?

  • rav

jukai – marbury is a fool who doesnt deserve a thing – its bad enough that he’s made more money in his career than steve nash it’d be a kick in the teeth of karma if he went and got a ring too!!

  • The Question

I think the C’s should sign him…what could possibly go wrong? You can always bench him and refuse to play him….

  • The Question

But seriously, hes one of the most talented PGs for some time now..he deserves to be on a team where he can win

  • memyselfand9

imagine what could possibly go down if marbury wins a ring. imagine the on court interviews…

  • http://www.triplejunearthed.com/dacre Dacre

Jukai …you probably crab dribble too..

  • http://www.manutd.com Z

4:16p : I guess he wants it for the kids in the hood.
He actually might but that’s neither here nor there. Where were you trying to get at?

  • http://www.manutd.com Z

The Question, what has Marbury done to ‘deserve to be on a team where he can win’ !??! I’ve been defending his right to not give a bargain to the NYK for some time now BUT hold on here… Marbury IS a pouter who plays hard when he feels like it. That doesn’t mean that the Knicks didn’t do him dirty. They did. And that doesn’t mean that he has ‘earned’ the right to go to a contender. He didn’t.

  • http://www.manutd.com Z

Ray Bourque earned the right to be traded to a contender when he won with the Avs. Ditto with KG to the C’s last year. Marbury? Nah.

  • balla30

Face it: Marbury is a selfish ballhog. UBUNTU without starbury

  • Teddy-the-Bear

Why do people act like Marbury is a good point guard? He’s a good SCORER (sometimes). That’s not the same.

  • http://www.basketballnonsense.com/ Melvin

Marbury can replace Ray Allen sooner than later if Allen grow old really quick… ;-)

  • The Last Kings Fan

That is why players should go to college. So they can learn to see a team cancer from a long way off

@Ulee: No I’m not sure about my statement, just hopeful IF they got him. lol. I don’t want him but I know enough about ball to know he has some value basketball wise.

As for you mo charles: Racist? #1 I was born in BAMA and raised in Roxbury, MA (which is The hood)#2 I was being sarcastic by eluding to his sneaker and clothing line that he has out so that low income people (all colors) can get “quality” stuff cheap. (It’s for the kids NOT his pockets..yeah right) #3 Yes, a person can be a racist against their own race but that’s not me. I take offense. #4 I’m Black, African American, A Man of Color, Dark Skinned or whatever term would make you feel better. If you don’t believe me go to the archives and check my pic in TrashTalk in the Green Day issue.

@ Z I cosign on the Ray & KG comment but Melvin my man please do not put Marbury in Ray Allen’s league. I understand where you are going but it leads to a dead end. lol. PS..Here is a thought that is unrelated to my above comments: Before making a bold statement or observation on someones character without really knowing them isn’t wise…these forums are fun and ppl call ppl things like dumb, stupid & “anal circles” all the time and that’s cool I guess b/c it’s in the context of bball knowledge BUT ppl should not attack anther’s character unless it’s obviously in jest.

  • http://fdsjlkf.com Jukai

Really? Do people STILL not know I was being sarcastic?

@Jukai..I hope you didn’t think my above comment was directed at you. lol. Your comments are funny and timely and yes at times sarcastic and no ppl still don’t get it. lol.

assholes to the ones who say steph aint a point gaurd. had it not been for that poor excuse of a potential good season last yr steph would be at 10 or 11 assist for his career. remember mark cuban threw nash in the garbage. nash assist total also went down when shawn marion demanded a trade to the garbage. where the hell is nash now in the mvp talks. i tought jason kidd was retired until he scored that 26 points the other day. up until then its been like 2 yrs since the last 20. mr. triple double playing with the mavs and i honestly would start j terry because jkidd look like mr.senior. but til this day every reporter who catch steph EVEN lookin at a ball feels he would be a monster still but u guys just hate. ego ego ego. but this is the same guy who is still sayin to the world that he wouldnt mind comin off the bench behind duhon..(CHRIS DUHON)….1
