Doc Rivers Isn’t Ready to Shut Down Injured KG

by Marcel Mutoni

As you know, the Boston Celtics have been playing pretty terribly of late. It’s a testament to how truly amazing their early-season run was that after absorbing their third consecutive defeat last night (at home to the Rockets), they now only have eight losses in total.

Still, things don’t look right in Beantown, and to make matters worse, the team’s best player has been slowed by a calf injury. But that doesn’t mean he can expect any time off to nurse the injury.

From the Boston Globe:

“He has soreness all over his body right now,” coach Doc Rivers said of Garnett, who sustained a calf injury in the 100-88 loss in New York last Sunday. “It’s been a tough stretch for us. We’re going to get a break later, we just have to get through this. I’m taking him out earlier than usual. We just have to make do with what we have.”

Asked if Garnett needed time off to recover, Rivers said, “If I thought it was something where it could cost us later, but it’s not anywhere near that at all.”

With huge games on the docket, such as the one on Friday night, Doc can ill afford to take Kevin off the floor. He just better hope the injury is as minor as he’s leading everyone to believe.

I dont think he has a “minor” injury.

  • ciolkstar Posted: Jan.8 at 11:08 am
I’m pretty sure this injury is worse than KG is letting on. He was moving very poorly in the Bobcats game. The fact that the Cs are carrying 3 max deals makes it really tough for them to sustain an injury to one of the Big 3. Rondo has fallen off really hard over the past few games, supposedly he, too, is dealing with an (elbow?)injury.

Been a looong time since he was “da Kid” …

  • jay Posted: Jan.8 at 11:09 am
I think you are wrong, “edmund”
This is another Paul Pierce game 1 type of thing….there I said it!

The C’s did alright last year when KG was out for 3 weeks with an abdomen injury, and it’s not like the celtics are going to get any worse than they’ve been playing the past 2 weeks, so I don’t see why they don’t rest KG for a week or two.

  • TADOne Posted: Jan.8 at 11:16 am
Um, he needs to step aside and let Powe and Davis play. F*ck being proud.

  • BETCATS Posted: Jan.8 at 11:17 am
pride and Robert Horry will save the day.

  • Ryan Jones Posted: Jan.8 at 11:17 am
This team is a mess. They should’ve broken up the Celtics a long time ago.

  • Squirrel7 Posted: Jan.8 at 11:22 am
Could Rondo have got repetitive strain injury from that behind-the-back fake he does 5862 times per game?

  • Gumdrop Posted: Jan.8 at 11:22 am
Seriously. Start playing future all-star Big Baby and tank for the lottery.

  • Spaceship Jay Posted: Jan.8 at 11:46 am
    Huh?

  • RV Posted: Jan.8 at 12:13 pm
oh great, another injury to my fantasy team…at this rate Yao’s next…

  • Static Posted: Jan.8 at 12:14 pm
This is actually a great time to let any injured player rest so they can make the best of the last half of the season with them at 100%, be it KG, Rondo or whomever…f*ck the record, try to get that home court and be healthy enough to get another chip

  • Mario Posted: Jan.8 at 12:25 pm
Celtics need kg because big baby davis and perkins and powe can’t get it done.

  • Todd Spehr Posted: Jan.8 at 12:49 pm
Who cares how many games they win… just have to win more games than Cleveland and LA to ensure home court.

  • Jacob Posted: Jan.8 at 2:02 pm
    I agree ^^

  • underdog Posted: Jan.8 at 2:27 pm
    Aaron Brooks, everybody. Applause!

  • Tzvi T Posted: Jan.8 at 2:30 pm
We all can agree they’re gonna make the playoffs. They gotta do what they did last year and let KG sit for 10 games.

  • Z Posted: Jan.8 at 2:50 pm
@ Todd Speher… they MUST care about how many games they win BECAUSE they need home court and Cleveland doesn’t really do that losing thing these days.

  • Jukai Posted: Jan.8 at 3:54 pm
For Rondo, if by “elbow injury” you mean “people are letting him shoot jumpers all day and for some reason he is and failing,” you are correct

  • Allenp Posted: Jan.8 at 5:48 pm
Gotta go with Jukai on Rondo.
People have refused to honor his jumper at all. Strangely, he’s refused to shoot way more wide open jumpers this year than last year. He’s overdribbling.

Welcome to the All-Star game, Mr. Yi!

  • Teddy-the-Bear Posted: Jan.8 at 6:50 pm
    Well, it depends. But still.

  • Teddy-the-Bear Posted: Jan.8 at 6:59 pm
    @ underdog: I applaud!
    Me Rockets was good.

Scary . . . scary. But I have trust in Doc that he’ll do the right thing. Garnett’s getting old-man minor injuries? Sore all over? This is scary business for the Boston fans, with the latest skid. And stop the Rondo hate. He’s a budding, improving young point guard who can already lead a team at 22 and is already a borderline all star. He’s been hitting the open three pointers (believe it or not) and his jumper is improving. Yes, he refuses to take it a good deal of the time, he’s a bit scared and not confident enough in his shooting skills. But blaming the latest Celtics mishap on Rajon is not the right move; although he has been playing his worst basketball of late. Blaming it all on him is not right. But giving Leon Powe more minutes is a great idea. Leon will give you the David Lee hustle, athleticism down low, hard-nosed defense with great footwork and the ability to take the charges, and quickness. The guy is underrated and should get more, let Garnett aside for 20 minutes a night or so. They’ll be there in the end; sitting the aging stars for a bit more won’t hurt, especially with the dudes that they have off the bench. And Powe>Big Baby, although Davis’s jumper has been surprising this year, he’s hitting shots and it’s awesome.

MOOSE..I love it! You have a good BBall IQ (seriously) I also believe they need to give their other bigs a few meaningful minutes during this stretch (not too many-Patrick O) and it will get them acclimated to real game situations more so than garbage time minutes ever will. It would also be a confidence booster. If rondo is hurt (as minor as it may be) they can also give their guards some more pt (Pruit et al). This will go a long way in the playoffs if they need them. I trust Doc’s judgement, well his confidence in the training staff. lol.

  • kev Posted: Jan.9 at 9:00 am
no excuses tonight celtic’s. Kg is obviously fine or he would be sitting down. He doesn’t look that hurt when i have watched him play.

  • Harlem_World Posted: Jan.9 at 11:18 am
When healthy, they’ve proven they are championship material. Therefore the simple goal should be to get healthy, or die trying.
