Marc Iavaroni: Fired

by Marcel Mutoni

After a frantic start to the season, the NBA Coaching Guillotine™ had been given a break. And now, it’s back to work. Its first victim was Marc Iavaroni, now formerly of the Memphis Grizzlies.

After starting the season 11-30, and currently on a seven-game losing streak, the Grizz’s braintrust had seen enough of Iavaroni’s work to deem him expendable. And now he’s gone. The Memphis Commercial appeal has the details:

Marc Iavaroni’s first head coaching stint lasted 1½ seasons. The Grizzlies fired him Thursday night, citing the poor record and lack of player development.

Former Grizzlies coach Lionel Hollins, now an assistant with the Milwaukee Bucks, will be named Iavaroni’s successor this weekend, according to a source with knowledge of the organization’s plans.

The Grizz were one of the feel-good stories at the beginning of the season, playing a frantic and wildly athletic brand of basketball. But then, the losing began. And it’s now time for a change.

Iavaroni leaves Memphis with a lifetime record of 33-90.

uno. saw this one coming a while ago

Damn, I read up on him in “7 Seconds or Less” and thought he would pan out. Guess not.

It’s hard out here for an NBA coach.

  • WhaHuh

Seven seconds or less only works when you have a whole team that can shoot. Oj Mayo and Rudy Gay are the only players on that team with a consistent jumper. It also relys on PGs who can pass well and shoot well- Conley/Lowry can do neither.

I’m confused as to why conley hasn’t played better? I thought he was going to be great when he came out of OSU. I guess he still has time – came out after only one year.

This firing makes no sense unless they have a vet coach that they’ve had their eye on. Paul Silas?

  • md

The NBA is gettin stupid this year Memphis dont suck cos of poor coaching they suck cos they have terrible players. It aint the coaches fault they traded their star player for garbage. Bad team dosent= Bad coach

  • Todd Spehr

Yeah, fire Iavaroni because they’d be a 50-win team under anyone else

  • Keith

Is there really a link on the left hand side of this page advertising naked chicks? Amazing.

  • Keith

Firing Iavaroni makes sense but only if the Grizz have a decent coach lined up. Going from former assistant coach to former assistant coach is not the way to improve your team.

I predict this does not end well for Memphis.

  • collin

why the hell was he hired in the first place, im probably more qualified for the head coaching job than he was

  • Keith

Just based on that comment Collin, you’re not.

  • dpak

He was the ugliest coach I’d ever seen.
His lips always made me cringe.

B.Long: I hope you’re right. I would like to see Silas back in the game. What’s he doing now anyway?

Obviously the team is not going to light up the league now that he is fired but I’ve been waiting for him to be let go. Marc Gasol is a pretty mobile, rugged and good passing Center that should have more of a role in anchoring that team on D and to keep the ball moving. Still, you have Mayo and Gaye jacking up fade away three ptrs with 20 seconds on the shot clock. They started off well cuz they concentrated on D and Darell Arthur was smoking off the bench with rebounds and blocks but once the L figured that out, the losing snowballed. At least that’s the way I see it. Maybe Marc can come to NYC and help D’Ant with it’s D. Prolly won’t happen as I think they’ve butted heads in PHX

The Grizzlies players don’t suck, they’ve got Mayo,Gasol,Gay,and Conley, and with a team made up of rising stars, sucess won’t come immeadietly, nevertheless, they were playing worse than they should have been, i don’t know if this one was justifiable or not

for the record Michael Conley is vastly overrated

  • Dark

Man I hope Memphis can pick up Ramon Sessions; their PG spot isn’t cuttin it.

  • md

@ josh D if those 4 players are ur agument for memphis being a good team in the nba you are in trouble. Gay and Mayo are good players the other two are nothing special

  • Bro. D.

I’m laughing because losing to the ‘Cats twice was probably the straw that… well you know.
Lack of player development? How about lack of players?
