Vince Carter vs Ref: NBA to Decide

by Marcel Mutoni

The artist formerly known as Vince Carter displayed enough vinsanity two nights ago to get thrown out of the game against the visiting Pistons by referee Derrick Stafford. The easy joke at the time was that Vince simply wanted to get an early-start on his New Year’s Eve celebration. Not so, allegedly.

According to people within the Nets organization, the ref used inappropriate language when addressing Carter. And now, the NBA is going to investigate the matter. The Daily News has the details:

However, accounts of the incident in the Detroit News and Detroit Free Press said Carter appeared to accuse Stafford of calling him “boy,” a term that is considered offensive to African-Americans. Like Carter, Stafford is African-American.

“The official said something to Vince that Vince thought was very inappropriate and he reacted,” Frank said. “Vince doesn’t have a reputation of a guy who’s going to rack up technicals.”

Well, regardless of what the League decides to do, Carter’s bandmates are convinced this is bad news for the Hawks (New Jersey’s opponent this evening):

“He’s going off,” forward Josh Boone predicted, “that’s all you need to know.”

“He’ll be really intense,” teammate Jarvis Hayes said. “He’ll probably want to come back intense. He’ll probably play one of his best games of the year.”

Atlanta defense: Here’s your challenge, should you choose to accept it.

I understand how that word can be demeaning in context but really? Boy? I was hoping he at least called him a underachieving mangina.

  • http://www.shawn-kemps-offspring.blogspot.com/ TADOne

Vince needed this for motivation? Really?

“Boy” isn’t racially insulting most of the time when it comes from a black person, but it may have insulted Carter as a man. No grown man likes to be called “boy” no matter what color they are. However, that ref is usually pretty calm. I’ve seen him in several games and he seems like the calm type.

I don’t know HOW many times I’ve heard that Vince was “gonna go off” after some previous misfortune only to find out that Vince was just gonna sulk some more and phone it in again.

  • WhaHuh

only the 2nd time hes been thrown out

  • Adam Thody

Vince only “goes off” when he’s getting booed when the Nets are in Toronto. Spite seems to motivate him, otherwise he realizes he’ll actually have to work and he just shows up. All other meanings of the word “boy” aside, maybe the ref was just referring the the fact that Vince acts like a spoiled little kid.

  • Orlando Green

lol…is a Man?…news to me…only someone that isnt really grown up and immature would react like this…hence a boy…grow up VINCE.

  • Myung

Just so you know, the Nets have played the Hawks better than any team has this season thus far (2 of Atlanta’s 10 losses have come at the hands of the Nets). He scored 26 in the first game and 29 in the second game. So… whether he has motivation or not, I expect him to torch us again tonight (and for Devin Harris to blow by Mike Bibby all night as well). Of course I’m also hoping we change things up and actually get a win this time.

so mr. Green, how would you call Rasheed Wallace then? Or Perkisabeast? Rip Hamilton? I could make a list here, but as always a lot of commenters are finding a new reason to hate on Vince. Stay classy!

  • http://www.lkz.ch Darksaber

That’s all? T-Dunc had a ref in his face trying to fight (i.e. get annihilated by Timmy) him during a game. Ah well, take your motivation where you need it Vincent Lamar.

  • http://www.hibachi20.blogspot.com BETCATS

Darksaber, that ref was Joey Crawlford, who hates everybody, human or robot.

  • http://www.bbaxn.com Darksaber

True that BET, but going off because a brother called him “boy”? Puhleeze.

  • http://www.hibachi20.blogspot.com BETCATS

he was just mad he felt the ref didnt respect him as a man, this is not in a racial context, unless VC went blind or some dramatic other sh!t happened to him that made him loose the ability to see color.

  • http://www.bbaxn.com Darksaber

    Good one BET.

the funny thing is they will loose the first game he comes back. Joe “the no expression solider” Johnson doesnt care

  • http://www.where-basketball-b-longs.blogspot.com/ B. Long

Quick! Name Vince’s favorite Kanye song! “heartless”? Yes that is correct!

  • http://hibachi20.blogspot.com/ RV

i can’t say i’m surprised he needs motivation to “go off”, it does run in the family afterall

  • http://www.shawn-kemps-offspring.blogspot.com H to the Izzo

It seems I would get in a lot of trouble in the US….

  • http://www.bbl.org.uk Josh D

Boy?Why is that offensive? Thats one of the weirdest insult i’ve ever heard, couldn’t he do better?

  • Eric B

Vince can be upset all he wants. But if he thinks he is going to take it out on MY HAWKS, Well Vince will still be upset and get his butt kicked by the HAWKS. Tough!

  • http://www.slamonline.com mat smith

if my boss at work said, “get me that done boy” id go mental, its derogatory, unless its an old relative whom you respect saying it too you.

  • http://lastknickstanding.blogspot.com Bryan

I don’t think its a racial thing I don’t let anyone call me either.

  • Ric Hardwood

whatever, Vince is a baby… Josh Smith won’t let Vince go off on the Hawks…

  • http://www.triplejunearthed.com/dacre Dacre

It is a disrespectful tag. I was called a “good boy” at work last week…I gave a funny look and they said, ‘Oh good man…I mean’…. Yeah it might sound complimentary in your mind but when you say it….not so much.
Its not hard to see where Vince is coming from.

  • Jacob

heres how you settle it, put VC in one corner and Derrick Stafford is another and have them duke it out…pay-per-view event right here!

  • Brad

Vince just isn’t the player he used to be…

  • niQ

boy is an offensive term? now that’s a new one… next thing you know “the” will be the new “f” word.haha

  • Will Lee

    he said “lick mine boy”

  • Myung

Hawks are 0-3 against the Nets. 21-8 against the rest of the League. Props to VC for hitting an amazing shot. Hawks blew a 20 point lead. We deserved to lose that one…sigh.

  • knowsense.

i guess he did go off…

  • http://www.manutd.com Z

    Now that’s range.

    Let the haters hate.

  • http://www.another48minutes.blogspot.com Gerard Himself

this makes my day. Yes. That shot made my day. Vince might have had a bad shooting night, but what a shot at the end…..

  • aggnba89

This shot was for the haters.someone wrote this comment :whatever, Vince is a baby… Josh Smith won’t let Vince go off on the Hawks… .You couldn’t predict better man……

  • http://www.hibachi20.blogspot.com Hursty

The NBA is in a tough spot regardless of its actions though. Back the Ref? Or defend the rights of a player? If neither, what consitutes a middle ground? Either way, it sets a precedent.

  • Myung

If you watch the replay, he was about 2 inches away from committing a backcourt violation… but yeah… tremendous shot. I’m thinking for guys like VC, Kobe, T-Mac… shots like that are about as easy as regular 3 point shots.

  • http://www.hibachi20.blogspot.com Hursty

They have the leg strength and the body control (core primarily) to get off that shot Myung. The extension that they can get off from the shoulder to elbow to wrist is also better than a shorter guy for obvious reasons. (Think of a catapult and sizings…)
I doubt that the refs would have called a back-court violation anyway though Myung.

  • Myung

Yeah… the refs probably wouldn’t have called it, but I saw the replay enough times to see that Vince nearly touched the ball right before it went into the backcourt and then he came up the court to nail that 3. It was an awesome shot, regardless. I love my team to death, but when you give up a 20 point halftime lead, you deserve to lose. Hopefully we’ll get back on the winning track tonight. I’ll be at the game to root on the good guys, but we match up terribly against Houston. If we can make it a track meet, we have a chance. Horford cannot guard Yao, and Artest will put the clamps on Joe. We play well at home, so hopefully we can pull out a win but I expect another close one, regardless.

  • Boing Dynasty

Myung, if you saw what the Raps did to houston last night, without JO and Jose, and only 19 from Bosh i wouldnt worry. Houston looks bad, and Mac looks like hes on the verge of a nervous breakdown talking about not knowing whats wrong with his game, and the system and spacing being all messed up.

  • http://www.manutd.com Z

I see the same thing with LeBron… he’s not a good 3-point shooter by any stretch of the imagination but he seems to shoot with the same % whether he’s at the line or 5 feet behind it.

  • http://www.hibachi20.blogspot.com Hursty

Well, you got a let off with all 3 small forwards being out tonight Myung :)
Battier, tmac and Artest not playing…
Still, the rockets let you shoot close to 60% from the floor and STILL had it come down to a great play by JJ to Bibby.
The Hawks were good, no doubt, but a 100% healthy and in SYNC Houston team would’ve more-than-likely pulled out a W…yes they are *my* team.

  • Myung

Couple things, Hursty. First of all, I admit the Hawks DO match up poorly against Houston (especially because Yao is 7’6″ and Horford, on a good day, is 6’10″). If the Rockets are fully loaded, we would’ve had a much tougher challenge. I know we caught a break with those guys being out. Secondly, I picked the Rockets to win the title this season so I have a lot of respect for them. Third, it doesn’t matter who the Hawks have played this season; nearly every game has been close. We play to the level of our competition, it seems. All that being said, I’m glad we got the win. We needed a win like that after losing the way we did Friday night.

  • http://www.hibachi20.blogspot.com Hursty

Josh Smith WAS great though Myung-no doubt about that.
I wish I had the confidence to pick my own team to win the Title… but RIGHT NOW, its an illusion unfortunately.
Also, funny about how fans come out to watch a successful team huh? Hawks this time last year vs. now? What a difference.
