Are the Suns About to Fire Terry Porter?

by Marcel Mutoni

Happy All-Star Weekend, Terry Porter. You’re fired! Maybe…

Word on the street, er, Web, is that the Suns are about to relieve their first-year coach of his duties. And that word, comes from the NY Post – so take it for what it’s worth:

Meanwhile, according to a Phoenix source, Porter will be replaced by Kerr, who recently completed a crash correspondence coaching course taught by McHale and Tony DiLeo.

A relatively plugged-in Suns blog is also hearing similar rumors about the Suns’ head coach.

If Porter were to be given his walking papers, it wouldn’t exactly be a shocking move on the part of Steve Kerr and co. He has failed, spectacularly, to get the players to buy into his system, and let’s just say the city of Phoenix isn’t planning any parade routes for mid-to-late June.

The Suns might want to hold off on the firing until after the weekend to save everyone involved a few headaches.

Honestly, I don’t think it’s Porter’s fault. The team has personality issues.

    Kerr as head coach? Yeesh…

  • Young Chris MP3

Sign Kenny Smith up! He’s been wanting a coaching gig for a while now and dude knows the game…

This probably signifies that they’re having trouble dealing Amare.
I can’t WAIT to see Kerr as a coach.

  • CHE

Porter doesn’t deserve to be anyones head coach in the NBA. Maybe a college coach the kids will respect him there but not in the Big League. Suns should have picked up Skiles but since Kerr wanted his close friend to come work for him that’s how it played out. Kerr needs to be fired also. He is an idiot, and I only based that on the decisions he has made thus far.

  • Phoenix Son

As a Suns lifer and a resident of Phoenix, it’s not Porter’s fault directly but he never was the right person for the job. The reason for the recent downfall of the franchise is Robert Sarver, he chased away the best basketball leadership team the Suns ever knew (Colangelo’s) and he brought in his San Diego neighbor (Steve “Spurs & Bulls” Kerr) to help with this quest of “Blind leading the Blind” for an NBA franchise. I hope Porter is released and Kerr does take over, if he does well then people will keep quiet, if he fails then Kerr gets the boot. Maybe a real owner will take the reigns from Sarver sooner or later also.

Of all people, Karl Malone mentioned this on TNT last week: Porter isn’t a dominant enough personality for this job. If Phoenix had have hired someone who Shaq/Amare/Nash had to bow down to, things might be different; with Porter that certainly isn’t the case, and boy is it showing. The guy looks like a fish out of water sometimes. His performance on Jan. 29 against S.A. was the gold standard for getting out-coached (hack-a-Bowen?). Also, his “we didn’t expect that” reaction to Azuibuike hitting all those 3s last week was interesting, considering the guy is THIRD in the league in 3PT%! Might be time to go TP.

And if Kerr takes over maybe we can watch him rot in public? Yes, I’m bitter.

  • The Seed

Sun’s downfall is not trading Marion or Amare and some pieces for Kevin Garnett when they had a chance. Steve Nash and Garnett with Marion, would have been a good team.

  • Greg Popovich

I agree with the “Lifer”… Its only a matter of time before pictures of Kerr and Popovich come out in the tabloids. Kerr has one goal, thats to be in upper management with the Spurs. He was givin a job dutie/mission.. It is called “Operation Horry”.. Thats to put a dent in the Suns organization before he gets the new job.

bring back collangelo (spelled something like that) delete sarver and fire kerr.

  • http://hoops4life.com overtime

Kerr’s coaching job would be the worst thing to watch ever, and i liked him as a broadcaster aswell.
Still, whichever gets him fired first eh?

  • http://lastknickstanding.blogspot.com Bryan

    Make nash player coach.

  • kev

Porter is not a great coach but Kerr is the one who assembled this mess of a team. He should have to coach them like Mchale in Minnesota to prove that his moves weren’t a huge mistake

  • AlbertBarr

    cosign brian

  • CHE

Porter and Kerr are going to hell for ruining one of my favorite teams to watch.

  • riggs

    eddie jordan!!

  • Prison Mike

I just want to see some trades happen. Why don’t they try to get Starbuy’s expiring contract? Seems like a win/win/win for New York/Phoenix/Starbry

  • luke

Amare for LaMarcus Aldridge,Bayless and a few other pieces, draft picks etc would make sense. Not getting the explosiveness with Aldridge, but a nice young player who can really shoot the ball from 18 feet, probably a future All Star.Bayless a nice back up for Nash, something they need and haven’t got with Dragic.Future starter in this league also….and the picks just thrown in for the future. For Portland,Oden and Amare could be niceeeee somewhere down the line.

  • rainman10

Well it ain’t gonna happen. Marion just got traded to the Raptors

  • Dark

Damn it is hard to believe where this team was just over a year ago and where it is today. And to think what the Suns team of old could have been if they had kept the squad together AND held on to draft picks:
Nash, Bell, Marion, Amare, Kurt Thomas with Rajon Rondo, Rudy Fernandez, Luol Deng, and Boris Diaw off the bench.

  • http://allday-fadeaway.blogspot.com nbk

I hope the suns fire Terry Porter and have since they hired him

  • Teddy-the-Bear

@ luke: That trade sounds alright, though I’m not so sure Amare would be quite willing to take a back seat to Trouble B. Roy.
And do the Blazers have enough money while taking on Darius Miles??

  • JESSEG

I hope they fire this guy. He is a horrible coach with this team.

  • Rod Fillmore

He’s a rent a coach. You get what you pay for.

  • http://www.kayceonline.com/blog/ Kevin

i can see Steve Kerr being a better coach than Terry Porter.. dude was confused half the time.

  • witness

why the hell would steve kerr replace terry porter? he will suck more than kevin mchale. he should admit that letting mike d’antoni walk was a mistake.

  • witness

why would portland want amare? he is gonna bring alot of negativity to a team full of professionals. their best bet is to trade lafrentz expiring deal for richard jefferson or someone else of that nature. hell try to get shaq on that squad. a new portland – laker rivalry would be fun and they would increase their chances of making it to the finals. dont give away lemarcus and get an amare back!

  • witness

cosign dark: thats what ive been saying. they could still even have joe johnson.

  • Nikki

Kerr and Porter both need to go.

  • Lan

Can you honestly call yourself a professional ball player and can’t run the HALF COURT OFFENSE!?

  • Todd Spehr

Porter was an assistant with Detroit last season and didn’t even get an interview when Flip Saunders was fired – what does that tell ya?

  • Teddy-the-Bear

Imagine if the Suns got Nellie. Wouldn’t that be something?

  • witness

… in other news the suns replace terry porter with amare stoudamire. his response: “im gonna be playing all the positions on the team now. i’ll get robin to sub in for me on defense. when im not playing point i’ll make sure nash gets me the ball. we’re basically gonna try to play as a team from now on.”

  • Orlando Green

    Its 90% POrter’s fault…send him packing

  • http://www.hibachi20.blogspot.com Hursty

co-sign Riggs. Eddie Jordan knows a thing or two about defense-less teams and offense orientated point guards.

  • MalevolentKing7242

poryer kerr both need the boot. Maybe a coach who will give a better ball flow and much better D

  • Alex

Kerr needs to be fired. Who in the world would trade Marion for Shaq. Marion was an all star in Phoenix and that team is a fast break team so Shaq does not belong there. Fire both Kerr and Porter!!!!

  • http://www.kicksonfire.com Anton

Are the Suns about to trade Amare to the Cavs?
    God I hope so.

  • Jimmy G

The trend continues of bad GM’s firing the coach that have to put up with their bad deals. Is it really smart to pay injury prone stars max contracts (Wizards & 76ers), make bad trades or no trades in the Bulls case, but the coach takes the fall.

  • http://www.ihateclay.com Kevin

Kerr needs to be fired, not Porter.
