Flip Saunders on the Marbury Experiment in Beantown

Steph’s old coach thinks it’ll work out just fine: “Unlike most, Saunders trusts Marbury’s motivation – on the floor, anyway. ‘Anything he does in a game is strictly to win,’ Saunders said. ‘Your greatest fear if you’re on the other team is his desire to win. His greatest strength can also be what you worry about, though. He wants to win so much that he thinks he can do it on his own. He wants to win more than anything, and he’ll do whatever that takes. But Doc (Rivers) will be able to control this, I think…I think (Marbury) will be patient. Doc will play who he has to play, and (Marbury) will go along with it.’”

    ummm first?

That’s exactly what worries me. Marbury won’t be able to publicly destroy the team. But he WILL get played, and I’m afraid that he’ll pull a Kobe a la 2005-2006 and end up killing the Celts when they need him to NOT try and take over a game. Remember, he was partly responsible for the olympics debacle a few years back when he tried to go one on five. Besides, dude hasn’t played in anything more than an exhibition in 13 months.

Please let all this come true.

I think Steph still has it in him to be the best point guard in the L and avg. 30 pts. while leading the Celtics to a championship. (Crosses fingers hoping that Steph reads and believes this too.)

I think if Steph tries to average 30 ppg on the Celtics or, laughably, *lead*, you can go ahead and give the Cavs the Eastern Conference title now.

    Agreed Chendaddy

Has he signed with the celts yet?

  • Herfdawg

@Josh D: Not yet, but it’s pretty much a done deal.

How much did he get paid to say that?

  • KozmicKid

That’s what I’m talkin about… True Flip! WTF is with the Pistons firing him anyway????

  • BostonBaller

Steph played alright in the win. To address those who think Marbury will try to take over or “lead”. It is impossible to do those things while on the bench and that’s where he’ll be if he even thinks of flip’n out so NO WORRIES on my part about him destroying the team.

Employee # 8 looks different now and NO shimmies

“He wants to win so much that he thinks he can do it on his own.” – that doesnt make sense at all Mr. Flip

did anyone really doubt marbury would fit? people hate on him just like they hate on T.O. Fact of the matter is HE GOT GAME. He is the original Jesus Shuttlesworth and the cream always rises to the top y’all.

  • chris

he will be good with this team. I was hoping the suns would bring him back but atleast goran dragic is playing better. I wish marbury well in boston

  • chintao

Steph has never been on such a talented squad. I doubt that Doc even has to mention that Marbury should refrain from trying to do too much. I hate the C’s, but I see another ring in their future.

  • CP34MVP

Nice to hear Flip talk again. but i co-sign Dacre. Are you a fortune teller?

  • chintao

I can’t speak for Flip, but for some of us, it’s just giving voice to our wishful thoughts.

Marbury is a veteran point guard. He’s been in the league for about 13 seasons now and he knows what it takes to win. Im confident he will be a great fit for the Celtics especially from a veteran stand point, and coming off the bench will mean more productivity from the 2nd string guys. Lets try not to worry about if Marbury will try to take over the team. With the Big Three, they will set him straight if he even thinks about it.
