Money Trouble Could Spell the End of Sacramento’s Kings

by Marcel Mutoni

Not too long ago, they were one of the L’s most popular teams, and seemed on the cusp of greatness. And now, they might be gone from Sac-town.

According to the Sacramento Bee, due to mounting financial losses, the Kings might not be long for their current city. Something, of course, ownership strongly denies:

Though he refused to cite a figure, sources close to the team estimate the franchise could lose up to $25 million this season, making it seem more likely that the Maloofs would be receptive to offers from officials in other markets – with more profitable arenas – who are interested in acquiring an NBA franchise. One league executive identified representatives from Anaheim and San Jose as particularly aggressive suitors.

“We’ve been approached constantly since we bought the team, and we’re still here,” [Joe Maloof] said. “We’ve never wavered. We’ve always kept our word. We didn’t try one (failed arena deal) and split. Our goal and objective is to get something done here. We know where we’re at – we’re at rock bottom – and we’ve got to turn everything around. And we will. Let’s see what Cal Expo comes up with. But we’ll look at anything.”

As the article points out, not only are the Kings the single worst team in the L (translation: fewer cowbells), but they dwell in a tiny market, and their gym is an absolute relic.

The Anaheim Kings has a certain charm to it, no? Vlade Divac must be rolling over in his grave.

Yeah,I think Vegas would be a really good spot for an NBA team, it would be good for the league too, as it is another city where no pro-sports teams reside and so many people go there anyways just to screw around you would have to think they would want to catch an NBA game to top off the experience. The “Kings” could stick since it goes along with the card theme, or the Las Vegas “Flush”.

    KANSAS CITY KINGS. PLEASE.

  • Blinguo

(Seattle) Super Kings, the best name of them all, according to a certain kleptomaniac hard smoking and drinking robot. Do it. (Dependent on the Maloofs having to surrender all future casino expansion money to get an updated arena though. Cache Creek and the other “Indian” casinos in the area are already a supporter of the Kings though, which doesn’t put the Vegas move entirely out of the picture also.)

@zee! downtown san jose would have the worst traffic if the kings moved to the city.

plus sjpd would have field days even during the weekdays

  • Teddy-the-Bear

However, I am glad the Kings got the chance to retire Chris Webber’s number before their potential move. He really deserved it.

  • Teddy-the-Bear

Its a shame Gary Payton’s number wasn’t retired before the Sonics moved to the WNBA.

Vlade Divac on those Lakers teams was my favourite, with Ceballos, Nick Van Exel, a young Eddie Jones and a ‘shout ya mouth or i’ll do it for ya’ Elden Campbell…and then Shaq came along and oh how it changed.

    well played lol!

It’s sad to see the Kings play this bad and be this horrible. It’s kinda the same feeling you get when you see muhammad ali shaking around like a tickle me elmo doll. You know he was once one of the greatest sports icon in the world and now he is twitching around like Michale J Fox’s grandpa.

The King will not go to Vegas. David Stern wont let that happen. He has already said that Vegas cant have a team

  • donovan

Can you imagine how easy it would be for the Maloofs to get players to come play in Vegas? The league doesn’t want that. Much less all the gambling.

Anaheim? Come on. The Greater L.A. Area doesn’t need a Clippers 2.0.
