Money Trouble Could Spell the End of Sacramento’s Kings

by Marcel Mutoni

Not too long ago, they were one of the L’s most popular teams, and seemed on the cusp of greatness. And now, they might be gone from Sac-town.

According to the Sacramento Bee, due to mounting financial losses, the Kings might not be long for their current city. Something, of course, ownership strongly denies:

Though he refused to cite a figure, sources close to the team estimate the franchise could lose up to $25 million this season, making it seem more likely that the Maloofs would be receptive to offers from officials in other markets – with more profitable arenas – who are interested in acquiring an NBA franchise. One league executive identified representatives from Anaheim and San Jose as particularly aggressive suitors.

“We’ve been approached constantly since we bought the team, and we’re still here,” [Joe Maloof] said. “We’ve never wavered. We’ve always kept our word. We didn’t try one (failed arena deal) and split. Our goal and objective is to get something done here. We know where we’re at – we’re at rock bottom – and we’ve got to turn everything around. And we will. Let’s see what Cal Expo comes up with. But we’ll look at anything.”

As the article points out, not only are the Kings the single worst team in the L (translation: fewer cowbells), but they dwell in a tiny market, and their gym is an absolute relic.

The Anaheim Kings has a certain charm to it, no? Vlade Divac must be rolling over in his grave.

aww.. miss the j.will and c.webb days.. seems like forever ago.

  • riggs

    the seattle kings….hmmmm

  • http://double-technical.blogspot.com Zee!

If they moved to San Jose, they’d sell out every game just because. Win or lose or in this case, lose or lose. Plus the Warriors have lost their minds charging what they charge for tickets, and the Oracle arena sucks. So another NBA team with a new venue (HP Pavillion) would most certainly be a good thing for the bay area. San Jose would dump tons of tech money into that teams revenue.

  • rav

seattle, vegas or san diego would be good

  • http://hibachi20.blogspot.com/ BETCATS

A Kannas City return would be a nice idea.

  • http://www.shawn-kemps-offspring.blogspot.com Eboy

The Las Vegas Kings seems wildly appropriate.

  • Gumdrop

I hear Kannas is beautiful this time of year.

  • Randy Brown

Vlade Divac would be flopping over in his grave

  • Randy Brown

Who is incredibly one of only three players to record 13,000 points, 9,000 rebounds, 3,000 assists and 1,500 blocked shots. Kareem, Hakeem, Vlade. This just seems so wrong

  • Squirrel7

I thought it had been a foregone conclusion for years that the Kings would end up in Vegas…

  • http://www.manutd.com Z

Co-sign TAD. The Clips should move to Anaheim already.

  • vtrobot

$25 mil? That’s nothing. Paul Allen’s Blazer’s lost $100 mil a couple years ago. Maybe he can help the Maloofs.

  • http://www.shawn-kemps-offspring.blogspot.com/ TADOne

Um, thanks Z. Not sure what I said though?

  • http://www.shawn-kemps-offspring.blogspot.com/ TADOne

Anyway, a team in Vegas has been a longtime coming.

  • RM

    The Vancouver Kings? ahhh yeahhh

  • http://where-basketball-b-longs.blogspot.com/ B. Long

I’ve been telling people this for the past three years. Don’t believe a word you hear from the Maloof’s. They’ve been drooling at the thought of moving to Sin City for a minute now. I actually just wrote about this on my blog earlier this week.

You know what has a certain charm to it? “Sacramento Kings.” Get bent, Anaheim.

  • Sparker

no no no no! Oh why oh why did Chris Webbers Game 7 potential gime-winning 3 -pointer rattle out against Minnesota in the 2004 playoffs?!
    Everything would be so different

    Kentucky Colonels. Please. Pleeeeeaaaase.

The Kings are all Sacramento has. They can’t leave!

  • Niio

The Las Vegas “Aces” has a nice ring to it no?

  • http://docfunk.blogspot.com Doc Funk

The Maloofs move the team to inside lil wayne’s stretch hummer.

Who is incredibly one of only three players to record 13,000 points, 9,000 rebounds, 3,000 assists and 1,500 blocked shots. Kareem, Hakeem, Vlade…………………. wow, i did not know this

  • pollyserial

hate to nitpick, but vlade divac isn’t in his grave yet.

  • Ken

    Rochester Royals anybody?

  • tenorca

Bonus because neither Kareem nor Hakeem chain smoked at half-time. I love the Divac.

  • Nate James

seatle is where they will go.

  • http://ittakesanationofmillionstoholdthissac.blogspot.com ciolkstar

I think they’ll probably go to Vegas unless Seattle changes its tune about a new arena. I’m fine with a team in Vegas, but just imagine THAT homecourt advantage. There are defintely some conflicts of interest there though.

  • Karen

Anaheim Needs a team. We have winning champion Ducks and Angels why not the KINGS!!!!!!!!!!!

  • Donn

I know the Arco Arena is a dump compared to those state of the art arenas being built but i gotta admit, i enjoy watching games at the Arco Arena. It’s small and intimate and there doesn’t seem to be a bad seat in the house. I’m not a Kings fan but i hope they don’t go anywhere. As a Northern CA resident and an NBA fan i always thought it was kinda cool that i have a choice of either going to Oaktown or Sactown to catch a game.

  • witness

Las Vegas seems like that kind of town.

  • http://phoenixsunsrising.blogspot.com/ Hersey

    Little Rock Kings

  • rainman10

    Kansas City. Or St. Louis.

  • TheMC5

    Vlade Divac died?

  • TheMC5

That last comment doesn’t come off anywhere near sarcastic enough.

  • Lan

The Kings aren’t going anywhere. Once their (the Maloofs) casino operations see more profits, they’re going to pump more capital back into that particular franchise.

  • http://ittakesanationofmillionstoholdthissac.blogspot.com ciolkstar

The Palms is doing just fine right now. Seriously, it sthe most “hip” casino is=n Vegas. I think the Maloofs are huge D-Bags but they know better than to throw good money at bad.

  • joey

the vancouver kings yeah baby lol

  • doyouwantmore

No one said Vlade was dead, just that he was flopping in his grave.

    Gotta love Vlade though.

    The Alabama Inbreds

  • http://bielasiakville.blogspot.com Jesse Bielasiak

I miss Vlade. and Rik Smits, and all the great White European Centers. Come Back!!!

  • Lan

Nah. Vegas couldn’t support a NBA team. Not that the ridiculous disposable income isn’t there, enough of the ture basketball fans aren’t in the city. If the NBA was a…novelty act, then maybe. I think an NBA team would be great, but a bigger risk than say, getting people drunk, flashing boobs in their faces, and taking their money.

  • mr. carter

kansas city or stay in sac-town.

  • AlbertBarr

Arco Arena is the only arena I have had the pleasure of watching a live game…The true Northern California would be a lesser place without the Kings…Instead of changing cities, why not change GMs for the first time in an eon…Geoff Petrie is the man but I wonder if he is slippin’…the Kings have hit rock bottom…I hope.

  • Lan

Mr. Carter…Kansas City? The KC Kings? It has a ring to it.

  • http://thesportsdiaryonline.blogspot.com Roy

    Las Vegas Royals… :D

  • http://www.slamonline.com Marcnificent

@Lan…We been drooling for a team here in Vegas for years, we DEFINITELY can support a Vegas team. The city is 2million plus strong not counting tourism. We will be fine, just bring them already. The problem is Stern is only so so to the idea, him and the Mayor have been goin back and forth for a few years now.

  • Internutz

Too bad Stern and the NBA is so damn crooked, otherwise the Kings would be sitting on top of a championship or two right now.

  • Internutz

Yeah,I think Vegas would be a really good spot for an NBA team, it would be good for the league too, as it is another city where no pro-sports teams reside and so many people go there anyways just to screw around you would have to think they would want to catch an NBA game to top off the experience. The “Kings” could stick since it goes along with the card theme, or the Las Vegas “Flush”.

  • donlaker

what stays in vegas comes form sacramento.
but who will go to vlade’s overpriced resturaunt
that closes early the vegas tumblers i like that maloofs take them off the board(vegas talk)

  • http://idunkonthem.blogspot.com/ albie1kenobi

so instead of cow bells, it’ll be… slot machines?

  • donlaker

cow ching , the vegas lights , the gambling sinners, vegas city rollers, the vegas palms
    pick one

  • donlaker

the las vegas palms that has a certain $ring
to it DAVID $TERN take note

  • lilblue4rmthaO

I like tha KC idea i’m in Omaha I’ll take tha 2 hour trip to catch a game

  • larrylegend

vlade for gm! kings will be up in smoke, opponents won’t see the basket. or as vlade would say: it’s just a francise, if it’s gone, it’s gone. next day will be a<nother francise

  • KCC

  • Blinguo

(Seattle) Super Kings, the best name of them all, according to a certain kleptomaniac hard smoking and drinking robot. Do it. (Dependent on the Maloofs having to surrender all future casino expansion money to get an updated arena though. Cache Creek and the other “Indian” casinos in the area are already a supporter of the Kings though, which doesn’t put the Vegas move entirely out of the picture also.)

  • Ryan D.

    Brooklyn Kings Holla !

  • donlaker

the las vegas tumblers and vlade works for the lakers now as a scout.. so chris webber could be coach or asst. coach the san jose kings,
the palm spring kings, the compton kings lol

  • Teddy-the-Bear

  • Teddy-the-Bear

  • http://sjsu.edu davidR

@zee! downtown san jose would have the worst traffic if the kings moved to the city.

plus sjpd would have field days even during the weekdays

  • Teddy-the-Bear

However, I am glad the Kings got the chance to retire Chris Webber’s number before their potential move. He really deserved it.

  • Teddy-the-Bear

Its a shame Gary Payton’s number wasn’t retired before the Sonics moved to the WNBA.

  • http://www.triplejunearthed.com/dacre Dacre

Vlade Divac on those Lakers teams was my favourite, with Ceballos, Nick Van Exel, a young Eddie Jones and a ‘shout ya mouth or i’ll do it for ya’ Elden Campbell…and then Shaq came along and oh how it changed.

  • CHE

“Randy Brown Posted: Feb.10 at 11:22 am
Vlade Divac would be flopping over in his grave ”

    well played lol!

It’s sad to see the Kings play this bad and be this horrible. It’s kinda the same feeling you get when you see muhammad ali shaking around like a tickle me elmo doll. You know he was once one of the greatest sports icon in the world and now he is twitching around like Michale J Fox’s grandpa.

  • JStad

The King will not go to Vegas. David Stern wont let that happen. He has already said that Vegas cant have a team

  • donovan

Can you imagine how easy it would be for the Maloofs to get players to come play in Vegas? The league doesn’t want that. Much less all the gambling.

Anaheim? Come on. The Greater L.A. Area doesn’t need a Clippers 2.0.
