The Bulls and Their Amare Fantasy

by Marcel Mutoni

Everyone knows that virtually half the League is after the Suns’ Amare Stoudemire. Among those suitors, are the Chicago Bulls. And to date, they’ve been the most upfront about how much they’d like to see STAT in Chicago black and red.

The Daily Herald caught up with a couple of Amare’s would-be teammates in the CHI:

Count Derrick Rose among those enthused by the possibility of Phoenix Suns power forward Amare Stoudemire joining the Bulls.

“Of course, anybody would want him,” Rose said following Monday’s practice at the Berto Center. “He could go anywhere, but if he comes here, we’ll love him. Great player, great teammate, plays hard, a force on the inside. So he’d be a good fit.”

“I tried a long time ago not to get excited about things like that, because you never know how much truth there is to it,” guard Kirk Hinrich said. “He’s a special player. He’s been an all-star in this league. He’s one of the best power players in this league.”

One encouraging sign for fans of the Bulls is the Suns’ apparent interest in Tyrus Thomas.

A couple of weeks ago, the Bulls’ season was appropriately deemed a “disaster”. That stinging word came from their chairman. A move of this magnitude, I suspect, would brighten up Mr. Reinsdorf’s spirits – to say nothing of his players’.

Tyrus, Gordan, Gooden’s contract and a first rounder for Amare and change I’d take it. Totally not doing the “first” thing.

  • Joe A Posted: Feb.10 at 10:08 am
A perennial all star for a bunch of role players on a bad team? I swear steve kerr is still wearing his spurs jersey underneath his suit.

  • TADOne Posted: Feb.10 at 10:09 am
So Russ, what church will you be attending?

  • what Posted: Feb.10 at 10:16 am
Derrick Rose and Amare together would be a lot of fun to watch. Too bad they would give up 200 points per game.

  • Squirrel7 Posted: Feb.10 at 10:18 am
If I were the Bulls, I’d rather keep Tyrus. The guy has so much potential, whereas I really don’t see Amare getting much better than he currently is. And while that is very good, the lack of defense is horrendous.

  • J.Deneer Posted: Feb.10 at 10:50 am
Amare would be happy untill he realized Rose was better than him. Then the bulls would sign shaq, and proceed to turn the clocks back 2 years. Amare re-signs with the suns.

  • Mendel Posted: Feb.10 at 10:58 am
    Rose + Amare = Payton/Kemp 2.0

  • riggs Posted: Feb.10 at 11:02 am
squirrel, how many times are people going to say tyrus has potential every year when his name is mentioned in trades? if he did have said potential then he should be traded for not reaching it soon enough.

  • Diesel Posted: Feb.10 at 11:03 am
Everyone talking about Tyrus’ potential – my question is how many years does it take to reach your potential? The guy’s been in the league for a few years now and the best we’ve seen from him are hot streaks. This one won’t last just like all the others didn’t. He’s a notoriously bad practice player and has even worse work ethic. If he doesn’t get big minutes he loses interest. Bulls need to make this trade, in addition to a big signing in 2010 (hello Dwade)

  • Jukai Posted: Feb.10 at 11:05 am
Riggs is right. If I was a Bulls fan, and not an avidly depressed Suns fan, I’d be totally down with this trade.

  • Todd Spehr Posted: Feb.10 at 11:08 am
I don’t mean to be so open about this, but Steve Kerr is basing his liking of Tyrus Thomas on a six-game “light bulb” of play? What about the previous three years of evidence that suggest he’s the TOTAL opposite to that? Please let there be no element of truth to that.

  • Sizzle Posted: Feb.10 at 11:27 am
kerr isn´t wearing just a spurs jersey underneath his clothes, there´s also the old bulls one and that´s why amare will land in chi-town

  • a_whiteman Posted: Feb.10 at 11:30 am
It couldn’t be payton/kemp 2.0 cuz those guys had defence

  • rikson Posted: Feb.10 at 11:42 am
Gordor will flurish in PHO -> how sweet………..

  • rikson Posted: Feb.10 at 11:43 am
Gordor the legendary dwarf that defends the entry to the holly…. gordon that is!

  • Diesel Posted: Feb.10 at 11:47 am
Gordon isn’t part of the trade. Its Gooden, Thomas, Tabo, Cedric Simons, and a draft pick.

  • riggs Posted: Feb.10 at 12:14 pm
if Tyrus does go to the suns, you can bet your money steve will get on him if he goes on his lazy sh*t

  • airs Posted: Feb.10 at 12:16 pm
i wish they’d keep tyrus. please, just take noah. just take him. gratis

  • rikson Posted: Feb.10 at 12:17 pm
My bad! But still.. Would be mighty nice!

  • kingofsota Posted: Feb.10 at 12:29 pm
yes tyrus DOES have potential and hes showing it but hes very inconsistent. that is the reason the bulls would give him up. I say hinrich tyrus and hughes for amare.

  • Bryan Posted: Feb.10 at 1:46 pm
Maybe Steve Nash can make Tyrus Thomas a better basketball player.

  • ciolkstar Posted: Feb.10 at 1:48 pm
The funny thing about the Suns is that their lineup LOOKS like its stacked. The have a “great” PG in Nash, JRich a totally capable starting 2, a nice combo of Grant Hill/Matt Barnes at the 3, Amare at the 4 and Diesel inside. Not to mention Barbosa as the scoring punch off the bench. I guess the team probably would function better with a true defensive PF, but I really think that defense has to start on the perimeter. Nash and JRich just allow too much dribble penetration, Shaq is too old to contest everything Amare doesn’t give a sh!t. For whatever reason, I still think Tyrus can be a serious player in this league, probably because I only WATCH him play a couple times a year.

  • Russ Bengtson Posted: Feb.10 at 2:06 pm
I would drive Thomas to the airport myself. Also, Ben Gordon is NOT getting dealt—he’d have to give up his Bird rights, which just plain isn’t happening. Not to mention he’s a base year compensation guy.

  • Hersey Posted: Feb.10 at 3:00 pm
I haven’t watched a lot of Bulls games but Thomas’ active play on defense has impressed me and Nash can provide some good looks for a raw athlete who’ll run. I have to agree that Rose and Amare would be a pretty nasty duo. This whole situation comes down to money, Amare is the easiest salary to dump. Owners aren’t going to pay the luxury tax to nab the 8 seed.

  • Ben Posted: Feb.10 at 3:07 pm
You Bull fans are lucky. If you get Amar’e you’ll be great for a long time and my Suns will just disapear. I hate Sarver and Kerr.

  • Candice Posted: Feb.10 at 3:26 pm
@Diesel, Tyrus actually does have great work ethic. He works out every moring almost with his trainer and works on his jumpshot. That being said I’m sick of his inconsitency.

  • Diesel Posted: Feb.10 at 3:32 pm
Candice, he had issues with both Skiles and Del Negro. They wouldn’t give him playing time because he wasn’t practicing hard. And its all fine if you want to practice your jump shot, but when you can jump like him and you have a point gaurd like Rose, you set up for the alley oop, or you get the ball and drive the lane. He keeps taking those jumpers in games even though he’s streaky as hell from 15 feet out

  • Tommy Patron Posted: Feb.10 at 3:39 pm
Tyrus Thomas has to go. He COULD be a decent starter, just not here.

  • Candice Posted: Feb.10 at 3:41 pm
Diesel I’m just saying he does do extra things. I know he has problems attitude problems but I rather have him than Noah. Noah wasn’t even in good condition when the season started. Noah has had problems with both too. It’s basically like pick your poision.

  • Caleb Posted: Feb.10 at 3:42 pm
“Great player, great teammate, plays hard, a force on the inside.” The first one maybe…

  • Candice Posted: Feb.10 at 3:46 pm
Diesel please excuse my second sentence. I haven’t been sleeping good. I’m just in a daze right now.

  • Candice Posted: Feb.10 at 3:49 pm
If Amare got traded to the Bull’s would Rose have to give up his jersey? Would Amare be miffed if Rose wouldn’t do it? Would I have to buy another Rose jersey, when I just got his jersey a couple months ago?

  • ciolkstar Posted: Feb.10 at 3:49 pm
I remember one of Skiles’ main issues with Tyrus is that he never ran the floor hard. He shows flashes of frightening atheleticism but most of the time he just lopes up and down the floor. He does look to be in tremendous shape this year and has definitely put some work in on his J, the only probelm with that is now he wants to take 18 footers all the time.

  • rainman10 Posted: Feb.10 at 3:50 pm
The Suns are my 2nd fav team, and Amare is in my fav 5, but I know a trade to the Bulls could be good for both teams. The Suns can get back Thomas and Gooden along with Hinrich and a pick. That gives the Suns more depth and D. I like it.

  • Candice Posted: Feb.10 at 4:01 pm
@ciolkstar I agree, he fall’s in love with jumper too much.

  • Wongtouski Posted: Feb.10 at 5:37 pm
Love the Suns, love Nash, love(d) Amare. His defense and effort is starting to annoy me. But it still seems too soon (sometimes) to just trade him like that. The beginning of the season had Porter coming out and saying they will play D. Kerr, whatever you want to say about his moves, gave Porter a big man and a point guard (Lopez + Dragic). He’s done nothing with them, now they don’t even seem to TRY to play defense at all. It’s disgusting. Steve Nash and Grant Hill are the best defensive players. Just fire Porter, then we’ll talk.

  • Diesel Posted: Feb.10 at 6:15 pm
That’s a good question Candice…I don’t know which one would give the numebr up. I’m guessing Amare would, just to show his new city that he’s not as selfish as all the reports were saying. I think your purchase is safe. I honestly think the Suns get a good deal too. Gooden is capable of 20 and 10. Tabo is a solid back up point. Tyrus can be unleashed with nash running the show. I think everyone comes out good.

  • donlaker Posted: Feb.10 at 6:29 pm
nash would love a run and gun with , tyrus , gordon or kurt hymlic ,…. stevie kerr pull the trigger , to save your g m job and what do you do with shaqtus and his big salary cactus

  • jordan Posted: Feb.10 at 6:57 pm
Too bad he is going to be a Piston! ;P

  • Candice Posted: Feb.10 at 7:23 pm
I guess all we can do is wait and see.

  • JamesPH Posted: Feb.10 at 7:51 pm
just fire porter! get eddie jordan and see what happens

  • Jukai Posted: Feb.10 at 8:43 pm
Whatever, just freaking do this. Suns ain’t making the playoffs at this rate anyway!

  • Jukai Posted: Feb.10 at 8:50 pm
If I were the Suns, I’d throw in Tucker and Lopez (both crap) with Amare to pull Gooden (expiring), Thomas, Noah, and Nocioni. Or, throw in Dragic in the trade and take away Nocioni and replace him with Hinrich so they have someone to back up Nash/replace Nash when he goes away in 2010.

  • Jukai Posted: Feb.10 at 8:52 pm
I really say that both Thomas and Noah should come with this deal… two energy bigs that should do well in Phoenix’s run and gun system, although honestly I’m not sure how either of them will fair playing with Shaq. Gooden might play better. I could find a billion scenarios that would be better than getting Gooden, but apparently Phoenix want some expiring contracts. Grand.

  • donlaker Posted: Feb.10 at 10:20 pm
so is steve kerr , co angelo 2.0 how will he save his job, he made some not so smart moves(shaqtus el cactus)AND NOW HE CAN SAVE THE DAY
if he gets , tyrus and noah/hinrich or even nociioni time will tell but amare is audi 3000

  • Flash Posted: Feb.10 at 10:25 pm
i say amare to the heat for marion(large expiring contarct) and beasley(young talent with potential) this deal would make much more sense for the suns and heat! they can let marion’s contract expire then sign another star via free agency this summer, and beasley can be the cornerstone of their franchise in the future. as for the heat flash and amare’s gonna tear it up in the future! kobe n shaq 2.0!

  • Wongtouski Posted: Feb.10 at 11:57 pm
@Flash That deal was REJECTED by Miami

  • Anton Posted: Feb.11 at 1:31 am
Nash will cry more than Big Baby when Amare gets traded

  • Jukai Posted: Feb.11 at 1:52 am
Flash, enough. That’s such a dumb deal. And it wasn’t REJECTED from Miami, it was never there to begin with. Dumb rumors abound.

  • NBA-JERSEY-KING Posted: Feb.11 at 4:11 am
Miami should just go all out to get Amare and then in 2010 get Lebron down to Miami, go ver the cap and win 3 or 4 championships and it will all be worth it

  • slamfan4life Posted: Feb.11 at 7:47 am
SICKEST BULLS GAME EVER YESTERDAY, THOMAS 22-10!!

  • Diesel Posted: Feb.11 at 12:53 pm
I don’t see how Heat fans think their offer is better. Marion’s expiring contract and gooden and simmon’s expiring contracts cancel each other out. Which leaves you with beasley vs the bulls offer of thomas and tabo. Thomas is better than beasly and you’re getting a solid defender and back up point in Tabo on top of that. Bulls deal is much better.

  • chitown4life Posted: Feb.11 at 1:06 pm
    Please get rid of Noah

  • chitown4life Posted: Feb.11 at 1:14 pm
John Waxson will find a way to mess this up like he did with drafting Lamarcua Aldredge among others. He needs to be fired for real

  • 007 Posted: Feb.11 at 3:07 pm
hhmmm..a deal is on d way.

  • chitown Posted: Feb.11 at 4:50 pm
We definitely need to pull this deal off. Boston is getting old. Cleveland may lose the king and pistons have fallen off. Bulls will be one of top 3 teams in east in 2 years with this deal.

  • VAL83 Posted: Feb.14 at 3:55 am
    THIS SOUND REAL NICE… KEMP/PAYTON 2!!!

  • Anton Posted: Feb.14 at 8:59 pm
If Amare seriously wants a ring he’ll go to Cleveland.
